The German legend of the Red Jews, a medieval conflation of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel with the biblical destroyers Gog and Magog, articulated throughout the Middle Ages and well into the sixteenth century a fundamentally antisemitic strain of popular apocalypticism. This undigested piece of medievalia disappeared as more strictly biblical narratives of the End replaced medieval myth. As a result, the Red Jews have not been noticed by modern historians though they were a universally-known feature of German apocalyptic belief for over three centuries.
In the last 20 years, the cognitive sciences have revealed fresh, surprising, and useful insights into how and why our students learn. Teachers can now draw on psychology and neuroscience research to supplement, reconsider, even overturn our traditions and training. This book offers a first taste of the theory of Lie groups, focusing mainly on matrix groups: closed subgroups of real and complex general linear groups. In recent years, international differences in work hours have been the focus of a substantial body of research. Much less attention has been paid to regional differences in working time in Canada, in spite of regional differences in average work hours that are of a magnitude that is similar to that of the Canada-U.S. difference in work hours. In this paper, we document regional differences in work hours across 6 regions of Canada for 2004, using a representative sample of 19,500 workers from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics. Using a dataset which combines the 1982-1997 tax records with administrative records of British Columbia bachelor's graduates from the classes of 1974-1996, this study examines the real annual earnings of graduates across 20 major fields of study for significant changes in earnings across cohorts.
This paper investigates the link between financial structure and employment growth, and the link between financial structure and inventory growth, among incorporated Canadian manufacturers from 1988 to 1997. It finds that financially vulnerable firms - smaller firms and those with higher leverage - shed nearly 10% more labour than financially healthier firms for a given drop in product demand. The influence was larger during the recession of 1990 to 1992 indicating that higher financial vulnerability, reflected in high leverage, may have worsened during that period. The influence was also greater in sectors that experienced larger cyclical fluctuations. On average, firms with high leverage also tend to cut inventories 5% more when a shock in demand occurs.
