As recently as 1968, computer scientists were uncertain how best to interconnect even two computers. The notion that within a few decades the challenge would be how to interconnect millions of computers around the globe was too far-fetched to contemplate. Yet, by 1988, that is precisely what was happening. The products and devices developed in the intervening years—such as modems, multiplexers, local area networks, and routers—became the linchpins of the global digital society. How did such revolutionary innovation occur? This book tells the story of the entrepreneurs who were able to harness and join two factors: the energy of computer science researchers supported by governments and universities, and the tremendous commercial demand for Internetworking computers. The centerpiece of this history comes from unpublished interviews from the late 1980s with over 80 computing industry pioneers, including Paul Baran, J.C.R. Licklider, Vint Cerf, Robert Kahn, Larry Roberts, and Robert Metcalfe. These individuals give us unique insights into the creation of multi-billion dollar markets for computer-communications equipment, and they reveal how entrepreneurs struggled with failure, uncertainty, and the limits of knowledge.
The Complete Worship Ministry Handbook by pastor and former worship leader, Andrew G. Robbins, is an extensive training resource for worship leaders, worship team members, and church members alike. Laying the foundation in the first section of the book by exploring the proper understanding and practice of true Biblical worship compared to cultural innovations, the author then turns the focus in the next two sections to worship ministry teams. Section 2 provides practical instruction to worship team members for serving God and their churches with their talents, and Section 3 provides instruction to worship leaders and ministry directors to help streamline their efforts and avoid many of the landmines associated with worship ministry leadership.
Serving with Honor is a book about ministry, but more importantly it’s a book about a form of integrity sorely lacking in today’s “me-centered” church. While the focal point of Serving with Honor is discovering and reaching one’s personal calling and destiny, the how-to part will provide eye-opening revelation regarding several principles that modern-day Christians seem totally ignorant about. At times this book will hit nerves and touch many sensitive issues, but at all times the Scriptures form the foundation of this sorely-needed guidebook on serving God’s Kingdom with honor and reaching one’s personal destiny in the process. “Many people today are flight risks in their local churches. Quick to find greener grass, they forfeit their destinies for a feel-good, temporary solution to the pressure of balancing family life with ministry duties. In his book, Serving with Honor, Pastor Andrew Robbins calls the church to accountability for her actions. Andrew challenges us to not forsake the process that God is taking us through by aborting God’s overall plan for our lives. This book is challenging, convicting, and a great comfort to those of us who still believe in the local church.” -Pastor Randall Burton, Northview Church, Columbus, IN, Founder and President of Zebulun INC, and author of the book, River Rising
How to Be Good at Life is thirty-one daily nuggets of inspirational wisdom, a chapter for each day of the month. Covering everything from relationships to finances and everything in between, this book provides insight that will inspire, challenge, and equip for living a blessed and significant life. This might be Andrew Robbins best book yet. His mix of scripture, psychology, motivational quotes (including those beyond the Christian realm), and overall grace and sensitivity is the finest, most powerful blend I have seen in a long time. There are elements about this work that I have never seen directly addressed in any Christian book. While written to a Christian audience, there is much here that even non-churchgoers can connect with. In a world losing its manners, this book is badly needed." - Brian Blair, Indiana journalist
The term “Five-Fold ministry” has been coined in reference to a list of five ministry Gifts given by God to enrich His Church as listed in Ephesians 4:11-13. These ministry Gifts are the pastor, apostle, prophet, evangelist, and teacher. Today, a sect of Christianity teaches that the Five-Fold ministry, along with miracles and the Gifts of the Spirit, all ceased with the first apostles. Those who hold this view have become known as “cessationists.” On the other side of the aisle are those who contend that the Five-Fold ministry, along with miracles and Gifts of the Spirit, are continuing today, and these have become known as “continuationists.” Most of the modern Church in the West has behaved as though there is little to no value in Spiritual Gifts and the Five-Fold ministry and has therefore carelessly discarded them, leaving them for “less intelligent” people who seek after “emotionalism.” It was always the Father’s intention, however, that the many manifestations of the benefits of the Holy Spirit would become apparent in value to us through the centuries. This book demystifies Spiritual Gifts, demonstrates the modern-day application of the Five-Fold ministry, and why we are unwise to minimize or ignore them.
Winner of the 2012 George Perkins Marsh Prize for Best Book in Environmental History In the twentieth century, the Mekong Delta has emerged as one of Vietnam’s most important economic regions. Its swamps, marshes, creeks, and canals have played a major role in Vietnam’s turbulent past, from the struggles of colonialism to the Cold War and the present day. Quagmire considers these struggles, their antecedents, and their legacies through the lens of environmental history. Beginning with the French conquest in the 1860s, colonial reclamation schemes and pacification efforts centered on the development of a dense network of new canals to open land for agriculture. These projects helped precipitate economic and environmental crises in the 1930s, and subsequent struggles after 1945 led to the balkanization of the delta into a patchwork of regions controlled by the Viet Minh, paramilitary religious sects, and the struggling Franco-Vietnamese government. After 1954, new settlements were built with American funds and equipment in a crash program intended to solve continuing economic and environmental problems. Finally, the American military collapse in Vietnam is revealed as not simply a failure of policy makers but also a failure to understand the historical, political, and environmental complexity of the spaces American troops attempted to occupy and control. By exploring the delta as a quagmire in both natural and political terms, Biggs shows how engineered transformations of the Mekong Delta landscape - channelized rivers, a complex canal system, hydropower development, deforestation - have interacted with equally complex transformations in the geopolitics of the region. Quagmire delves beyond common stereotypes to present an intricate, rich history that shows how closely political and ecological issues are intertwined in the human interactions with the water environment in the Mekong Delta. In Plowed Under, Andrew P. Duffin traces the transformation of the Palouse region of Washington and Idaho from land thought unusable and unproductive to a wealth-generating agricultural paradise, weighing the consequences of what this progress has wrought. During the twentieth century, the Palouse became synonymous with wheat, and the landscape was irrevocably altered. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, native vegetation is almost nonexistent, stream water is so dirty that it is often unfit for even livestock, and 94 percent of all land has been converted to agriculture. Commercial agriculture also created a less noticeable ecological change: soil erosion. While common to industrial agriculture nationwide, topsoil loss evoked different political and social reactions in the Palouse. Farmers all over the nation take pride in their freedom and independence, but in the Palouse, Duffin shows, this mentality - a remnant of an older agrarian past - has been taken to the extreme and is partly responsible for erosion problems that are among the worst in the nation. In the hope of charting a better, more sustainable future, Duffin argues for a candid look at the land, its people, their decisions, and the repercussions of those decisions. As he notes, the debate is not over whether to use the land, but over what that use will look like and its social and ecological results.

Discover what it Means to be Truly Spiritual Many Western Christians get sucked into the crippling thinking that a life which God will honor means going through the motions of religious observation without any real attention to the process of character transformation as we follow the example of Christ. Still others, especially those in the charismatic circles to whom most of this book will address - the same circles in which the author spent most of his Christian life - seem to believe that a truly spiritual life is one that is marked by ecstatic emotional experiences with only a secondary focus on the daily task of building one's faith and character down in the trenches of day-to-day living where emotional highs are often absent. A discussion on the importance of understanding God's work in the day-to-day might not seem like material noteworthy enough to write a book about. Yet, you might be surprised how much emphasis God puts on it and how many Christians are frustrated in their spiritual walks because they fail to recognize how God works in the everyday events of their common day. The practice of giving the first ten percent of one's income to a church or ministry has become a topic of debate in recent years. Having been widely accepted for generations, tithing has now come under fire by a growing segment of today's Church who insist that tithing passed away with the Old Testament Law. This treatise by Andrew G. Robbins examines both sides of the subject and seeks to bring a truly Biblical perspective for those who may still be confused about whether or not God wants them to tithe. Pastor Robbins also reaches across the aisle to those who oppose the concept of New Testament tithing with a respectful, yet powerful defense of the timeless principle of worshiping God with the tithe. One of the best-selling modern books defending the concept of New Testament tithing, entitled, The Blessed Life, was written by well-known pastor, Robert Morris, and Pastor Robbins takes Pastor Morris' excellent work a step further by offering readers point-by-point Biblically-based counter arguments for the most common objections to tithing, as well as Pastor Robbins' own dramatic testimony about the benefits of tithing.
If you grew up in the country, you may have once or twice seen a turtle perched atop a fence post. The first thought to cross your mind upon seeing this unusual sight would probably be that the turtle did not get on top of that fence post by itself; it had help. This analogy is meant to represent just that - something accomplished that would not normally be possible without the assistance of someone or something more capable. That is the message of this book: how to accomplish more with less; how to go higher financially (and in other areas of life) than your talents and abilities would otherwise take you; how to position yourself to be propelled by God Himself to heights you may have never thought possible; and why God wants to prosper the people who attend their ears to His methods. Andrew G. Robbins has been in different facets of ministry since 1993, mostly in the areas of worship and teaching. An active writer, Mr. Robbins has authored numerous books, articles, and blogs. Collected here in this omnibus edition are three of Andrew Murray's books. Included are Absolute Surrender, The Master's Indwelling, and The Prayer Life. I desire by God's grace to give to you this message-that your God in heaven answers the prayers which you have offered for blessing on yourselves and for blessing on those around you by this one demand: Are you willing to surrender yourselves absolutely into His hands? Every one of us is a temple of God, in which God will dwell and work mightily on one condition-absolute surrender to Him. God claims it, God is worthy of it, and without it God cannot work His blessed work in us. We often hear about the compromise life and the question comes up What lies at the root of it? What is the reason that so many Christians are wasting their lives in the terrible bondage of the world instead of living in the manifestation and the privilege and the glory of the child of God? And another question perhaps comes to us: What can be the reason that when we see a thing is wrong and strive against it we cannot conquer it? What can be the reason that we have a hundred times prayed and vowed, yet here we are still living a mingled, divided, half-hearted life? To those two questions there is one answer: it is self that is the root of the whole trouble.
In this new Pure Gold Classic edition, by Andrew Murray, we have combined three great classic works: Waiting On God Working For God Be Perfect Together, these present a trilogy of blessed truth that will guide Christians into a deeper, more intimate, and more fulfilling relationship with the Lord. Each book is comprised of 31 chapters, or lessons, designed to be month-long daily readings. In this edition, each book builds upon the previous one in order to guide the reader to first wait upon God, in patient humility, for His will to be revealed in our lives; then to work for God, habitually, in His strength alone; and then to Bb perfect in heart and Christian maturity before God, seeking to be perfect as their Father in heaven is perfect. Murray beautifully unfolds Biblical truths to show the believers in Christ that before they can seek to be perfect they must first surrender the will in complete dependence upon Gods working, and become co-laborers with the Lord amidst the trials and tribulations of this world that the cause of His Kingdom and the glory of His name might be proclaimed. The message of the book is wonderfully summed up by Rev. Murray; If Gods purpose with the perfection of the individual believer is to be carried out, waiting and working for God must have much greater prominence given to it as the true glory of our Christian calling.
