CIA Agent Dave McClure is sent to speak with the station chief at the embassy, but he soon finds himself up against a cell of Hezbollah terrorists. Back in the States, after leaving his kendo club one night, Dave is kidnapped and brought to a cabin in the West Virginia mountains, where Hezbollah agents intend to torture and then kill him. Dave must find a way to escape or breathe his last. And then there’s a situation in Tokyo, where embassy employees are being threatened, bullied, and beaten by Yakuza members. Dave is sent to assist, leading to yet another life-or-death challenge for the beleaguered agent. And it will take all the courage and cunning McClure possesses to make it out alive.
The CIA’s most valued Russian double agents are being assassinated one by one. In Langley Center itself, Jack Barrett, Director of Central Intelligence, barely escapes assassination. When the Agency discovers the attacks originate from a Russian top secret cyberwarfare program called Chernyy Almaz, or Black Diamond, they must respond swiftly to shut down the attacks and extract their top prized agents before they’re lost forever. Chief among them is Dr. Armand Mishenkov, the head of Russia’s research and development for cold fusion weaponry. Pursued by Russian assassins and Spetsnaz teams, Agent Dave McClure must find Mishenkov and smuggle him across Europe and to the United States—but can they make it alive?
The youngest county in the state of West Virginia, Mingo County was formed in 1895. With its majestic mountains and rolling hills, Mingo County has rich natural resources, including timber, coal, gas, and oil. This beautiful area was the location for the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud, which began during the Civil War and expanded throughout southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. It was also the site of a tragic attempt to unionize the coal miners of Mingo County. In May 1920, the Matewan Massacre placed Mingo County in the national spotlight when Matewan chief of police Sid Hatfield and his group of union miners had a shoot-out with the Baldwin-Felts detectives who had come to town to evict striking miners from their homes. Today, the residents of Mingo County live peacefully beside the Tug Fork River. Mingo County reflects the warm-hearted, patriotic, friendly, hardworking people who call this area home.

Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1980s, roughly half of Furman’s high school basketball teammates lived in the largely Anglo, and increasingly Jewish, San Fernando Valley, while the other half were African Americans bused in from the inner city. Los Angeles was embroiled in efforts to desegregate its public school district, one of the largest and most segregated in the country. Tensions came to a head in the late 1970s as the state implemented its forced busing plan, a radical desegregation program that was hotly contested among Los Angeles residents—particularly among Valley residents—and at all levels of the courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. In My Los Angeles in Black and (Almost) White, the high school’s diverse basketball team serves as the entry point for a trenchant exploration of the judicial, legislative, and neighborhood battles over school desegregation that gripped the city in the aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education and that continue to plague our "post-racial" nation. Furman accesses a diverse array of opinions about these years and about the current crisis of race and public education by examining landmark judicial decisions, public policy studies, and newspaper articles, and by interviewing key community leaders, including former U.S. Representative Bobbi Fiedler, the Jewish activist who led the campaign to stop forced busing in Los Angelese, and retired Superior Court Judge Paul Egly, with whom Fiedler and her allies wrangled. Furman also documents his recent visit to Los Angeles during which he met with several of his former teammates, coaches, and neighbors. At once critical and fair-minded, My Los Angeles in Black and (Almost) White cuts through the incendiary rhetoric over school desegregation to offer a lucid, engaging, and informed account of our long legacy and current challenges regarding race and public education.
