An Important Study on the Worship of the Early Church This introduction to the origins of Christian worship illuminates the importance of ancient liturgical patterns for contemporary Christian practice. Andrew McGowan takes a fresh approach to understanding how Christians came to worship in the distinctive forms still familiar today. Deftly and expertly processing the bewildering complexity of the ancient sources into lucid, fluent exposition, he sets aside common misperceptions to explore the roots of Christian ritual practices--including the Eucharist, baptism, communal prayer, preaching, Scripture reading, and music--in their earliest recoverable settings. Now in paper.

Epiphanius, Bishop of Constantia on Cyprus from 367 to 403 C.E., was incredibly influential in the last decades of the fourth century. Whereas his major surviving text (the Panarion, an encyclopedia of heresies) is studied for lost sources, Epiphanius himself is often dismissed as an anti-intellectual eccentric, a marginal figure of late antiquity. In this book, Andrew Jacobs moves Epiphanius from the margin back toward the center and proposes we view major cultural themes of late antiquity in a new light altogether. Through an examination of the key cultural concepts of celebrity, conversion, discipline, scripture, and salvation, Jacobs shifts our understanding of "late antiquity" from a transformational period open to new ideas and peoples toward a Christian Empire that posited a troubling, but ever-present, "otherness" at the center of its cultural production.
This book examines how Gregory of Nazianzus, a fourth-century Greek writer famed as 'the Theologian' in the Christian tradition, expressed the mystery of Christ in terms of his own life. It studies Gregory's three genres of writing (orations, poems, and letters) and shows how Gregory developed an 'autobiographical Christology'.

Three Classic Andrew Murray Books in One Wisdom-Filled Volume The powerful writings of Andrew Murray, the nineteenth-century minister and author, still inspire today. · In Humility, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ, who will then fill them with His grace. It is often called the best work ever written on the topic. · Abiding in Christ invites you to listen to words from Scripture, read a daily meditation, pray, and surrender yourself anew to Christ. This thirty-one-day devotional is as timely now as it was in 1895 when it was first published. · Living a Prayerful Life outlines the way to overcome prayerlessness, which Murray believed was the greatest roadblock to spiritual growth. He offers inspiring and practical guidelines for becoming a prayer warrior, including examples from the prayer lives of the apostle Paul, George Müller, and Hudson Taylor. The wisdom in these pages will encourage and equip you to live a life of humility, surrender, and prayer, bringing you closer to the One who created you and longs to be with you. Each title in this collection has been edited for today's reader.
Collected here in omnibus edition are three of Andrew Murray's most important Books. Included here are Humility, With Christ in the School of Prayer, Abide in Christ Abide in Christ: I pray earnestly that our gracious Lord may be pleased to bless this little book, to help those who seek to know Him fully. I pray still more earnestly that He would, by whatever means, make the multitudes of His dear children who are still living divided lives see how He claims them wholly for Himself, and how the wholehearted surrender to Him alone brings unspeakable joy and glory. With Christ in the School of Prayer: It is under a deep impression that the place and power of prayer in the Christian life is too little understood that this book has been written. I feel sure that as long as we look on prayer chiefly as the means of maintaining our own Christian life, we shall not know fully what it is meant to be. But when we learn to regard it as the highest part of the work entrusted to us, the root and strength of all other work, we shall see that there is nothing that we so need to study and practice as the art of praying correctly. Humility is the most overlooked teaching of Jesus Christ. In this book Andrew Murray explores how essential humility is to the understanding and practice of Christianity. Perhaps the best book ever written on the subject.

Collected here in this omnibus edition are three of Andrew Murray's books. Included are Absolute Surrender, The Master's Indwelling, and The Prayer Life. I desire by God's grace to give to you this message-that your God in heaven answers the prayers which you have offered for blessing on yourselves and for blessing on those around you by this one demand: Are you willing to surrender yourselves absolutely into His hands? Every one of us is a temple of God, in which God will dwell and work mightily on one condition-absolute surrender to Him. God claims it, God is worthy of it, and without it God cannot work His blessed work in us. We often hear about the compromise life and the question comes up What lies at the root of it? What is the reason that so many Christians are wasting their lives in the terrible bondage of the world instead of living in the manifestation and the privilege and the glory of the child of God? And another question perhaps comes to us: What can be the reason that when we see a thing is wrong and strive against it we cannot conquer it? What can be the reason that we have a hundred times prayed and vowed, yet here we are still living a mingled, divided, half-hearted life? To those two questions there is one answer: it is self that is the root of the whole trouble.

Two classics by Andrew Murray in one affordable volume: Absolute Surrender: Based on a series of sermons by Andrew Murray, Absolute Surrender extols the need for "absolute surrender" to God. Murray provides concrete steps for bringing such surrender into one's life. He also describes both the fruit of surrendering and the different stages one goes through on the path to Christian liberty. Full of insight, Absolute Surrender is a timeless devotional that will aid every believer. The Deeper Christian Life: In his classic book, The Deeper Christian Life, Andrew Murray helps us come to grips with common nagging insecurities in our Christian walk. A shallow relationship with God leads us down a road of doubt and insecurity. Murray helps us go deeper in our relationship with God. With that deeper relationship comes growing confidence and joy in the gospel-- joy which springs from the knowledge of God's grace in forgiving us, and which enables us to extend that grace to others
Andrew Murray (May 9, 1828 - January 18, 1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church." (wikipedia.org) Excerpt from the book: The words, from which I want to present a simple message, will be found in the Gospel according to St. Luke, the 24th chapter and the 31st verse: "And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him." Some time since, I preached a sermon with the words "Jesus Himself" as the text; and as I went home I said to those who were walking with me: "How possible it is to have Jesus Himself with us and never to know it, and how possible to preach of, and to listen to, all the truth about Jesus Himself and yet not to know Him." I cannot say what a deep impression was made upon me as I thought over it.
