This book provides a broad overview of the topic Bioinformatics with focus on data, information and knowledge. From data acquisition and storage to visualization, ranging through privacy, regulatory and other practical and theoretical topics, the author touches several fundamental aspects of the innovative interface between Medical and Technology domains that is Biomedical Informatics. Each chapter starts by providing a useful inventory of definitions and commonly used acronyms for each topic and throughout the text, the reader finds several real-world examples, methodologies and ideas that complement the technical and theoretical background. This new edition includes new sections at the end of each chapter, called "future outlook and research avenues," providing pointers to future challenges. At the beginning of each chapter a new section called "key problems", has been added, where the author discusses possible traps and unsolvable or major problems.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of HCI and Usability for e-Inclusion, held as the 5th Symposium of the Workgroup Human-Computer Interaction and Usability Engineering of the Austrian Computer Society, USAB 2009, in Linz, Austria, in November 2009. Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) should use intelligent technologies to support elderly and impaired users. Intuitive and nearly natural interaction for the user is an important requirement. Knowledge from different fields including AmI technology, cognitive psychology, (intelligent) user interface design, and context awareness is required. This workshop was a step towards establishing the IUI4AAL community specific for this purpose. The papers in this proceedings include intelligent applications to assist the user in the AAL environment, AAL specific approaches for modeling user capabilities and user interface adaptation as well as interaction and multimodality in AAL.

Andreas Riener studies the influence of implicit interaction using vibro-tactile actuators as additional sensory channels for car-driver feedback and pressure sensor arrays for implicit information transmission from the driver toward the vehicle. The results of his experiments suggest the use of both vibro-tactile notifications and pressure sensor images to improve vehicle handling performance and to decrease the driver’s cognitive workload.
