Dynamical zeta functions are associated to dynamical systems with a countable set of periodic orbits. The dynamical zeta functions of the geodesic flow of lo cally symmetric spaces of rank one are known also as the generalized Selberg zeta functions. The present book is concerned with these zeta functions from a cohomological point of view. Originally, the Selberg zeta function appeared in the spectral theory of automorphic forms and were suggested by an analogy between Weil's explicit formula for the Riemann zeta function and Selberg's trace formula ([261]). The purpose of the cohomological theory is to understand the analytical properties of the zeta functions on the basis of suitable analogs of the Lefschetz fixed point formula in which periodic orbits of the geodesic flow take the place of fixed points. This approach is parallel to Weil's idea to analyze the zeta functions of pro jective algebraic varieties over finite fields on the basis of suitable versions of the Lefschetz fixed point formula. The Lefschetz formula formalism shows that the divisors of the rational Hassc-Wcil zeta functions are determined by the spectra of Frobenius operators on l-adic cohomology.

Current demographic statistics show that modern societies are rapidly aging. Aging in general is accompanied by an increased susceptibility to physical and mental disease as well as an increased risk of mortality. Health care costs are expected to rise enormously. Therefore, successful aging with less disease burden and dependency is emerging as one of the most crucial health care goals of the upcoming decades. In this dissertation, endocrine health and its age-related changes are focused. In men, a continuous decline of sex steroids such as testosterone or dehydroepiandrosterone occurs around the ages of 40 years leading to psychological and physical adaptation processes. The presented results indicate an integrated hormone parameter consisting of declining sex steroids as a useful biomarker of healthy aging in men. Furthermore, psychosocial risk factors such as depressive symptoms or chronic stress were shown to be associated with an intensified age-related decline of this integrated hormone parameter. In addition, the age-related deterioration in body composition was also shown to be associated with psychosocial risk and protective factors.

Our DMV Seminar on 'Classical Nonintegrability, Quantum Chaos' intended to introduce students and beginning researchers to the techniques applied in nonin tegrable classical and quantum dynamics. Several of these lectures are collected in this volume. The basic phenomenon of nonlinear dynamics is mixing in phase space, lead ing to a positive dynamical entropy and a loss of information about the initial state. The nonlinear motion in phase space gives rise to a linear action on phase space functions which in the case of iterated maps is given by a so-called transfer operator. Good mixing rates lead to a spectral gap for this operator. Similar to the use made of the Riemann zeta function in the investigation of the prime numbers, dynamical zeta functions are now being applied in nonlinear dynamics. In Chapter 2 V. Baladi first introduces dynamical zeta functions and transfer operators, illustrating and motivating these notions with a simple one-dimensional dynamical system. Then she presents a commented list of useful references, helping the newcomer to enter smoothly into this fast-developing field of research. Chapter 3 on irregular scattering and Chapter 4 on quantum chaos by A. Knauf deal with solutions of the Hamilton and the Schr6dinger equation. Scatter ing by a potential force tends to be irregular if three or more scattering centres are present, and a typical phenomenon is the occurrence of a Cantor set of bounded orbits. The presence of this set influences those scattering orbits which come close.

Andartes: Set in the mid 1950s, Andartes (Guerrillas) is an absorbing glimpse into the fiercely fought EOKA struggle for the independence of Cyprus from British colonial rule: the drama all the more poignant given its basis in historical fact. It is vividly written, brutal, emotional, with a most touching story. This absorbing read follows Alexi's life from an early age of utter poverty where he befriends a Turkish Cypriot compatriot and both become inseparable. They grow into young lads and enjoy life at its fullest until one day their lives had changed forever. Alexis' pride and ideals lead him on a journey that results in his paying the ultimate price. The New York based international magazine "ODYSSEY: The World of Greece" in their September / October 2008 issue has given Andartes its own review. THE BOOK REVIEW: by Elena Polyzos. There are few non-academic studies written in English about the Cypriot struggle for independence from British colonial rule in the mid -1950's. As a result, the story of this fiercely fought, bitter guerrilla war has been somewhat inaccessible, with Lawrence Durrell's Bitter Lemons of Cyprus, written over fifty years ago, being the classic account of those momentous events. Andartes is a worthy addition to the literature on the subject, a dramatic novel based on historical fact. The author convincingly examines the root of the war, the formation of EOKA the Greek Cypriot guerrilla liberation organization, (hence the title, 'Andartes', or rebels) and the internecine struggle between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Although told from a Greek Cypriot point of view, Chrysafis does attempt to provide an objective and balanced account of the Greek, Turkish, and British involvement in the struggle and mostly succeeds. Even so, it is the British who come off worst, a case of complacent and misguided colonial rule. The scenes of torture and executions portray the brutality of their authority and reveal the author's full contempt for their actions. These scenes are particularly poignant given that they describe events which took so soon after the World War II. Andartes is also a novel of Greek-Turkish friendship and traces the relationship between a young Greek and a Turk, and how they are shaped by the violence of those years. The author concludes that violence begets violence, and in the end, nobody remains unaffected. A satisfying emotional read with vivid and believable characters and a gripping story.

The articles in the present volume, written over a period of 25 years, reflect part of this journey, as viewed from a Pauline perspective. Combining the positive aspects of the traditional biblical research paradigms with the important insights of modern linguistics, literary science, semantics and pragmatics, particularly rhetoric, the author investigates the convergence of various influences in Paul's pre-christian career. He proposes new possibilities of understanding Paul's language and style, such as hyperbolical contrasts, typical of his Semitic background. In this book, Andreas Broeckmann examines a variety of twentieth- and early twenty-first-century artworks that articulate people's relationships with machines. In the course of his investigation, Broeckmann traces historical lineages that connect art of different periods, looking for continuities that link works from the end of the century to developments in the 1950s and 1960s and to works by avant-garde artists in the 1910s and 1920s. An art historical perspective, he argues, might change our views of recent works that seem to be driven by new media technologies but that in fact continue a century-old artistic exploration. Broeckmann investigates critical aspects of machine aesthetics that characterized machine art until the 1960s and then turns to specific domains of artistic engagement with technology: algorithms and machine autonomy, looking in particular at the work of the Canadian artist David Rokeby; vision and image, and the advent of technical imaging; and the human body, using the work of the Australian artist Stelarc as an entry point to art that couples the machine to the body, mechanically or cybernetically. Finally, Broeckmann argues that systems thinking and ecology have brought about a fundamental shift in the meaning of technology, which has brought with it a rethinking of human subjectivity. He examines a range of artworks, including those by the Japanese artist Seiko Mikami, whose work exemplifies the shift.

The master hypothesis on which the book is based maintains that the new dynamics of old age is best observed in a range of everyday aging contexts that have been undergoing major change since the second half of the 20th century. In particular, five areas of new and persistent dynamics are treated in depth: the social environment, with a focus on cohort effects in social relations and the consideration of family relations and elders as care redelivers; the home environment, with emphasis on housing and quality of life, relocation and urban aging issues; the outdoor environment, with consideration of out-of-home activity patterns, car-driving behaviour and the leisure world of aging; the technological environment, with treatments of the role of the Internet and the potential of technology for aging outcomes and; and the societal environment with a focus on global aging, the new politics of old age and older persons as market consumers.
