This research note presents a complete treatment of the connection between topological circle planes and topological generalized quadrangles. The author uses this connection to provide a better understanding of the relationships between different types of circle planes and to solve a topological version of the problem of Apollonius. Topological Circle Planes and Topological Quadrangles begins with a foundation in classical circle planes and the real symmetric generalized quadrangle and the connection between them. This provides a solid base from which the author offers a more generalized exploration of the topological case. He also compares this treatment to the finite case. Subsequent chapters examine Laguerre, Möbius, and Minkowski planes and their respective relationships to antiregular quadrangles. The author addresses the Lie geometry of each and discuss the relationships of circle planes-the "sisters" of Möbius, Laguerre, and Minkowski planes - and concludes by solving a topological version of the problem of Apollonius in Laguerre, Möbius, and Minkowski planes. The treatment offered in this volume offers complete coverage of the topic. The first part of the text is accessible to anyone with a background in analytic geometry, while the second part requires basic knowledge in general and algebraic topology. Researchers interested in geometry-particularly in topological geometry-will find this volume intriguing and informative. Most of the results presented are new and can be applied to various problems in the field of topological circle planes. Features
Entering developing markets, companies are challenged by various cultures and widespread corruption. This book is a cross-cultural survey that explores the crime preventive effects of corporate cultures and compliance management systems (CMS) in China, India, Russia and Germany. Almost 2,000 managers anonymously reported about the compliance programs in place and cultures in their companies as well as on their experience with corruption at work and in everyday life.Despite differences across countries, results suggest that the elements of an integrity-promoting corporate culture are similarly important in their corruption preventive effects. The second major result is that a CMS can develop its effectiveness only when combined with an appropriately practiced integrity-promoting company culture. Third, companies can counteract the negative external influences of a corruption-prone national culture. Moreover, spill-over effects of an integrity-promoting company culture can make an important contribution to national cultural change. For this reason, an integrity-promoting corporate culture is a contribution to corporate social responsibility.
Beginning with a comprehensive survey of existing semiconductor-based chemical microsensors and microsystems, this book proceeds to describe in detail CMOS technology-based chemical microsensor systems. The benefits of using CMOS technology for developing chemical microsensor systems and, in particular, monolithically integrated sensor systems comprising transducers and associated circuitry are laid out. Several successful realizations of such microsensor systems are presented. First, the fundamentals of the chemical sensing process itself will be elucidated, followed by a short description of microfabrication techniques and the CMOS substrate. Thereafter, a comprehensive overview of semiconductor-based and CMOS-based transducer structures and their applications is given. It is shown that CMOS-technology can be successfully used as platform technology to integrate microtransducers with the necessary driving and signal conditioning circuitry, and, in a next step, to develop monolithic multisensor arrays and fully developed microsystems with on-chip sensor control and standard interfaces. The book concludes with a brief outlook to future developments, such as interfacing cells with CMOS microelectronics.
Our actions are informed by the consideration of reasons; reasons which constructivism suggests are not simply discovered, but made by us. This book examines this view, elaborating its basic idea into a fully-fledged account of practical reasons, making its theoretical commitments explicit, and defending it against well-known objections.
The establishment and implementation of cross-organizational business processes is an implication of today's market pressure for efficiency gains. In this context, Business-To-Business integration (B2Bi) focuses on the information integration aspects of business processes. A core task of B2Bi is providing adequate models that capture the message exchanges between integration partners. Following the terminology used in the SOA domain, such models will be called choreographies in the context of this work. Despite the enormous economic importance of B2Bi, existing choreography languages fall short of fulfilling all relevant requirements of B2Bi scenarios. Dedicated B2Bi choreography standards allow for inconsistent outcomes of basic interactions and do not provide unambiguous semantics for advanced interaction models. In contrast to this, more formal or technical choreography languages may provide unambiguous modeling semantics, but do not offer B2Bi domain concepts or an adequate level of abstraction. Defining valid and complete B2Bi choreography models becomes a challenging task in the face of these shortcomings. At the same time, invalid or underspecified choreography definitions are particularly costly considering the organizational setting of B2Bi scenarios. Models are not only needed to bridge the typical gap between business and IT, but also as negotiation means among the business users of the integration partners on the one hand and among the IT experts of the integration partners on the other. Misunderstandings between any two negotiation partners potentially affect the agreements between all other negotiation partners.
Intended for wire-bonding and flip-chip packaging professionals and for scientists and engineers working in the field of mechanical microsensors, this practical monograph introduces novel measurement technologies that allow for in situ and real-time examination of physical processes during the packaging process or during subsequent reliability tests. The measurement system presented here makes possible measurements at formerly inaccessible packaging interconnects. For the first time it becomes possible to describe the wire-bonding process window in terms of the physical forces at the contact zone instead of the applied machine settings. This is significant for a deeper understanding and future development of these packaging processes. Applications of the sensor in the field of wire bonding and flip-chip characterization are also illustrated. The reader will gain much insight into the important field of interconnection technology in semiconductor packaging.
An understanding of the characteristics and the ecology of soils, particularly those of forest ecosystems in the humid tropics, is central to the development of sustainable forest management systems. The present book examines the contribution that forest soil science and forest ecology can make to sustainable land use in the humid tropics. Four main issues are addressed: characteristics and classification of forest soils, chemical and hydrological changes after forest utilization, soil fertility management in forest plantations and agroforestry systems as well as ecosystem studies from the dipterocarp forest region of Southeast Asia. Additionally, case studies include work from Guyana, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia and Nigeria. The papers have been developed from presentations given at the "International Congress on Soils of Tropical Forest Ecosystems/3rd Conference on Forest Soils" held in Balikpapan, Indonesia, and will be indispensable for all concerned with forest soil science and sustainable forestry in the humid tropics.
