Finalist for the 2010 Man Booker Prize The New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year In her follow-up to Small Island, winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year Award and the Orange Prize for Fiction, Andrea Levy once again reinvents the historical novel. Told in the irresistibly willful and intimate voice of Miss July, with some editorial assistance from her son, Thomas, The Long Song is at once defiant, funny, and shocking. The child of a field slave on the Amity sugar plantation in Jamaica, July lives with her mother until Mrs. Caroline Mortimer, a recently transplanted English widow, decides to move her into the great house and rename her "Marguerite." Together they live through the bloody Baptist War and the violent and chaotic end of slavery. An extraordinarily powerful story, "The Long Song leaves its reader with a newly burnished appreciation for life, love, and the pursuit of both" (The Boston Globe).
There were many challenges, successes, and concerns in providing long-term care to older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking at central North Carolina, the authors highlight the implications of providing long-term care to older Americans, with an emphasis on the importance of communication, resilience of staff, and value of human infrastructure. Based on extensive interviews, this collection of essays reflects on the participants’ individual experiences and represents the voices of staff and caregivers working in long-term residential care communities, in-home and community-based programs, as well as regional aging service providers and advocates.
A groundbreaking, haunting, and profoundly moving history of modernity's greatest tragedy: concentration camps. For over 100 years, at least one concentration camp has existed somewhere on Earth. First used as battlefield strategy, camps have evolved with each passing decade, in the scope of their effects and the savage practicality with which governments have employed them. Even in the twenty-first century, as we continue to reckon with the magnitude and horror of the Holocaust, history tells us we have broken our own solemn promise of "never again." In this harrowing work based on archival records and interviews during travel to four continents, Andrea Pitzer reveals for the first time the chronological and geopolitical history of concentration camps. Beginning with 1890s Cuba, she pinpoints concentration camps around the world and across decades. From the Philippines and Southern Africa in the early twentieth century to the Soviet Gulag and detention camps in China and North Korea during the Cold War, camp systems have been used as tools for civilian relocation and political repression. Often justified as a measure to protect a nation, or even the interned groups themselves, camps have instead served as brutal and dehumanizing sites that have claimed the lives of millions. Drawing from exclusive testimony, landmark historical scholarship, and stunning research, Andrea Pitzer unearths the roots of this appalling phenomenon, exploring and exposing the staggering toll of the camps: our greatest atrocities, the extraordinary survivors, and even the intimate, quiet moments that have also been part of camp life during the past century. What happens when the Long Count ends? That's what a team of scientists situated near Izapa, Mexico, sets out to determine in the years leading up to December 21, 2012 - the end date of the Long Count, the ancient Mayan calendar which some believe predicts the end of the world. When infighting threatens to break up the team before the solution is found, one unscrupulous member advances a theory that puts world armies on alert, brings religious organizations to a tipping point and global society to a panic. As thousands flock to Izapa on the end date to wait for the world to end, the team realizes too late that the danger they thought would come from outside the human race actually comes from within.
The book provides an overview of the floods and major hydrological changes that occurred in the medieval Hungarian kingdom (covering the majority of the Carpathian Basin) between 1000 and 1500 AD. The analysis was based on contemporary documentary evidence presented for the first time and the results of archaeological and scientific investigations. Beyond the evidence on individual flood events, the book includes a comprehensive overview of short-, medium-, and long-term changes detected in a hydrologically sensitive environment during the transition period between the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age. It also discusses the possible causes (including climate and human intervention) and the consequences for the physical and human environment, namely the related hydro-morphological changes, short- and long-term social response, and human perception issues.
For the first time, a collection of Andrea Levy's later works in ebook form, including the Orange Prize-winner SMALL ISLAND and Booker shortlisted THE LONG SONG. SMALL ISLAND is a novel that defined a generation; the story of two couples in post-war London, and their attempts to understand each other. It won the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Orange Prize 'Best of the Best' as well as the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and the Whitbread. Possibly the definitive fictional account of the experiences of the Empire Windrush generation, it was selected by the BBC as one of its '100 Novels That Shaped Our World'. THE LONG SONG, Andrea's final novel, was a Sunday Times bestseller and shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. It is a hauntingly beautiful, heartbreaking and unputdownable novel of the last days of slavery in Jamaica, following the story of July, a slave on the sugar plantation of Amity. The collection is completed by Andrea's last full work, SIX STORIES & AN ESSAY. A collection of stories from across her life, she explains the context of each piece within the chronology of her career and finishes with a new story, written to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. As with her novels, these stories are at once moving and honest, deft and humane, filled with insight, anger at injustice and her trademark lightness of touch.
Sometimes achieving big things requires the ability to think small. This simple concept was the driving force that propelled the Volkswagen Beetle to become an avatar of American-style freedom, a household brand, and a global icon. The VW Bug inspired the ad men of Madison Avenue, beguiled Woodstock Nation, and has recently been re-imagined for the hipster generation. And while today it is surely one of the most recognizable cars in the world, few of us know the compelling details of this car’s story. In Thinking Small, journalist and cultural historian Andrea Hiott retraces the improbable journey of this little car that changed the world. Andrea Hiott’s wide-ranging narrative stretches from the factory floors of Weimar Germany to the executive suites of today’s automotive innovators, showing how a succession of artists and engineers shepherded the Beetle to market through periods of privation and war, reconstruction and recovery. Henry Ford’s Model T may have revolutionized the American auto industry, but for years Europe remained a place where only the elite drove cars. That all changed with the advent of the Volkswagen, the product of a Nazi initiative to bring driving to the masses. But Hitler’s concept of “the people’s car” would soon take on new meaning. As Germany rebuilt from the rubble of World War II, a whole generation succumbed to the charms of the world’s most huggable automobile. Indeed, the story of the Volkswagen is a story about people, and Hiott introduces us to the men who believed in it, built it, and sold it: Ferdinand Porsche, the visionary Austrian automobile designer whose futuristic dream of an affordable family vehicle was fatally compromised by his patron Adolf Hitler’s monomaniacal drive toward war; Heinrich Nordhoff, the forward-thinking German industrialist whose management innovations made mass production of the Beetle a reality; and Bill Bernbach, the Jewish American advertising executive whose team of Madison Avenue mavericks dreamed up the legendary ad campaign that transformed the quintessential German compact into an outsize worldwide phenomenon. Thinking Small is the remarkable story of an automobile and an idea. Hatched in an age of darkness, the Beetle emerged into the light of a new era as a symbol of individuality and personal mobility—a triumph not of the will but of the imagination.

This is a memoir of my personal and professional experiences working with seniors and their families. As a social worker I've worked with individuals with both physical and cognitive impairments in both the community and various long-term care settings. Although lots of supports exist for primary caregivers, little time is geared towards helping children make sense of what is happening. Children are expected to go along with the process and their observations, fears, and anxieties are unintentionally ignored. Parents often say they will explain everything later, as they try to maintain their own health and sanity in the midst of never ending caregiver duties. Children are sometimes the first to recognize that things are not as they should be. This book was designed to shed light on why long-term care or home supports are needed when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia. It is a glimpse into what families may experience and one viable solution to keep their loved ones safe. It is an effort to acknowledge that quality care facilities do exist and serve a purpose. It highlights the loving bond between a grandparent and child, while promoting the value and need for more intergenerational programs. We as a society have so much to learn from our elders. Cherish them when they are here. My wish is for all seniors to be happy and safe and most of all age with dignity and grace. For everyone who has had a friend or family member diagnosed with dementia, and to all the health care professionals that provide compassionate care: you are not alone in this journey. With the appropriate help and supports we can ensure that our loved ones maintain their dignity and quality of life. To my parents and my children: I commend you for you for your courage and strength. To all health care providers and my colleagues whom I've laughed and cried with: your empathy and daily efforts are above and beyond ministry standards. To my clients past and present: you inspire me and motivate me to keep going.
The PAINTING ANGELS were a revelation that surfaced on the painting palettes of Andrea Beloff when she fervently embraced oil painting as her primary art medium in phase two of her life, during which she also took ownership of her Greater Purpose. The Ministry of Angels, their functions and God appointed assignments, are delightfully depicted in the angel art, and the Scriptures that testify to them. They reveal our God's sovereignty in history, in present times, and in the promises He has revealed through prophesy to His people as the End Times draw near. A little five-year journey with supernatural dimensions.
