The history of women and art in Canada has often been celebrated as a story of progress from amateur to professional practice. Rethinking Professionalism challenges this narrative by questioning the assumptions that underlie the category of artistic professionalism, a construct as influential for artistic practice as it has been for art historical understanding. Through a series of in-depth studies, contributors examine changes to the infrastructure of the art world that resulted from a powerful discourse of professionalization that emerged in the late- nineteenth century. While many women embraced this new model, others fell by the wayside, barred from professional status by virtue of their class, their ethnicity, or the very nature of the artworks they produced. The richly illustrated essays in this collection depict the changing nature of the professional paradigm as it was experienced by women painters, photographers, craftspeople, architects, curators, gallery directors, and art teachers. In so doing, they demonstrate the ongoing power of feminist art history to disrupt patterns of thought that have become naturalized and, accordingly, invisible. Going beyond the narratives of recovery or exclusion that the category of professionalism has traditionally encouraged, Rethinking Professionalism explores the very consequences of telling the history of women's art in Canada through that lens. Max Reger (1873-1916) is perhaps best-known for his organ music. This quickly assumed a prominent place in the repertory of German organists due in large measure to the efforts of Reger?s contemporary Karl Straube (1873-1950). The personal and collegial relationship between the composer and performer began in 1898 and developed until Reger?s death. By that time, Straube had established himself as an important artist and teacher in Leipzig and the central authority for the interpretation of Reger?s organ music. The Reger-Straube relationship functioned on a number of levels with decisive consequences both for the composition of the music and its interpretation over a period fraught with upheaval on sociopolitical, religious and aesthetic fronts. This book evaluates the significance of the relationship between the composer and organist using primary source materials such as autograph performing manuscripts, reviews, programmes, letters and archival sources from contemporary organ building. The result is a much enhanced understanding of Reger in terms of performance practice and reception history, and a re-examination of Straube and, more broadly, of Leipzig as a musical centre during this period.

Rapid advances have taken place in various aspects of reproductive biology during the last decade. These advances have centered around several organ systems that comprise the reproductive system and encompass molecular events and structure-function relationships. It becomes important to review these advances in knowledge, at periodic intervals, with respect to feedback systems and regulatory loops that control reproductive processes in vivo. Towards this end, a workshop entitled "Functional Correlates of Hormone Receptors in Reproduction" sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health was held in October 1980. The proceedings of the workshop were published by Elsevier Biomedical/New York. This workshop was followed by two workshops sponsored by the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health entitled "Role of Peptides and Proteins in Control of Reproduction" in February 1982 and published by Elsevier Biomedical and "Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Reproduction" in October 1985 and published by Plenum Press. It was, therefore, timely to review the current state of knowledge regarding the regulation of ovarian and testicular function by bringing together scientists working in separate and discrete aspects of reproduction to review the functional implications of their research on the regulation of function within the same tissue and also in relationship to feedback systems and regulatory loops with other tissues.

Rather than adhering to the typical practice in cognitive psychology of trying to predict behavior from a model of cognitive mechanisms, this book develops a number of models that successfully predict behavior from the structure of the environment to which cognition is adapted. The methodology -- called rational analysis -- involves specifying the information-processing goals of the system, the structure of the environment, and the computational constraints on the system, allowing predictions about behavior to be made by determining what behavior would be optimal under these assumptions. The Adaptive Character of Thought applies this methodology in great detail to four cognitive phenomena: memory, categorization, causal inference, and problem solving.

This book explores the politics of conservative Christian churches and social movements in Russia and the United States, focusing on their similar concerns but very different modes of political engagement. Whilst secularisation continues to chip away at religious adherence and practice in Europe, religion is often, quite rightly, seen as an influential force in the politics of the United States, and, more questionably, as a significant influence in contemporary Russia. This book looks at the broad social movement making up the US Christian Right and the profoundly hierarchical leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church as socially conservative actors, and some of the ways they have engaged in contemporary politics. Both are seeking to halt the perceived drift towards a more secular political order; both face significant challenges in handling the consequences of secularism, pluralism and liberal individualism; and both believe that their nations can only be great if they remain true to their religious heritage. In exploring their experience, the book focuses on shared and different elements in their diagnosis of what is wrong with their societies and how this affects their policy intervention over issues such as religious and ethnic belonging, sexual orientation and education. Drawing on political, sociological and religious studies, this work will be a useful reference for students and scholars of religion and politics, Russian politics and American politics.

Anderson provides insights into the everyday lives of people behind the Iron Curtain, such as the English coach he played for in West Germany, an elderly woman he visited many times in East Germany, and a sailmaker’s family he lived with in Warsaw. He reflects on German, Polish, and Cold War history, providing a commentary on the times and the places where he lived and played, and the importance of basketball along the way.

First published in 1974 Conservative Politics in France gives a scholarly account of politics in France from 1880 to the present and explains the way in which the Right has evolved from a collection of weak and transitory political associations to the relatively well – organised Gaullist coalition. Exciting patterns of interaction between personal careers, political events, and party organisation have characterised this period. War and colonial conflict have brought an end not only to regimes but also to political parties. The lingering influences of an aristocracy and bourgeoisie de tradition, and the survival of a large peasantry and local social systems preserved peculiar styles of politics. The first great wave of party building at the beginning of the twentieth century produced organisations ranging from the doctrinaire anti-parliamentary league to the loose electoral association. The Fourth Republic saw another wave of party building but only since 1958 has a party emerged which can attract most of the moderate and conservative electorate. No other book has attempted to cover this historical period and to give detail accounts of local as well as national political structures. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of French political history, French politics, and European politics.
