This aesthetics inextricably map mystical transcendence to a spiritual world—a realibus ad realiora—through fluid transmutation. Anastasia Kostetskaya presents an innovative cross-disciplinary analysis of iconicity—a relationship of resemblance between the artistic form and its meaning, the possibilities of which symbolist artists explored to create sublime emotional experiences for the reader or viewer. She challenges the strictly dualistic and hierarchical terms of traditional symbolist concepts. This study demonstrates that this counterdualistic tendency cognitively extends from liquescence—a perception of fluid continuity between people and water. This analysis of interconnected symbolist media shows how symbolists rely on blending in their attempts to engender emotional flux through the pliable form. Fusing cognitivist and historic-cultural approaches in fluidly connected art modes, this book represents chronological, conceptual, and aesthetic continuity from poetry by Konstantin Bal'mont (1867–1942), paintings by Viktor Borisov-Musatov (1870–1905), and cinematography by Evgenii Bauer (1865–1917).

It explores how creativity and the pursuit of self-knowledge relate to their lives and arises from the author's own experience as a woman, writer, and academic. Inquiries into creativity and feminist critical and cultural theory provide the framework for examining how the identity of the female artist is shaped within the patriarchal institution of academia. These inquiries allow a deeper understanding of the impact of this institution on the life and work of the female artist both within and beyond academia. As an auto-ethnographic study, Kamanos' distinctive voice is developed through narratives, journals, letters and a development of personal metaphors, as well as with a dialogue with others. As performative text, the narratives map a process of transformation that traces the artist's path from silence to voice. This book has important implications for women in higher education as self-study is revealed to be an essential methodological instrument for the articulation of alternative, authentic perspectives of marginalized and under-represented women. Moreover, the acknowledgement of the academic/ artist paradigm in teacher education opens the path for a re-viewing of the metaphors of self-denial, impersonation and masks that are part of the landscape of teacher knowledge.

In paying critical attention to disabled girlhood, the book uses feminist disability studies to rupture the unwitting assumption in girls’ studies that girlhood is necessarily non-disabled. By closely examining the ways that disabled girls represent themselves, Anastasia Todd goes beyond a critique of the figure of the privileged, disabled girl subject in the national imagination to explore how disabled girls circulate their own capacious re-envisioning of what it means to be a disabled girl. In analyzing a range of cultural sites, including YouTube, TikTok, documentaries, and GoFundMe campaigns, Todd shows how disabled girls actively upend what we think we know about them and their experience, recasting the meanings ascribed to their bodyminds in their own terms. By analyzing disabled girls’ self-representational practices and cultural productions, Todd shows how disabled girls deftly theorize their experiences of ableism, sexism, racism, and ageism, and cultivate communities online, creating archives of disability knowledge and politicizing other disabled people in the process.
