The Black Woods chronicles the history of Black pioneers in New York's northern wilderness. From the late 1840s into the 1860s, they migrated to the Adirondacks to build farms and to vote. On their new-worked land, they could meet the $250 property requirement New York's constitution imposed on Black voters in 1821, and claim the rights of citizenship. Three thousand Black New Yorkers were gifted with 120,000 acres of Adirondack land by Gerrit Smith, an upstate abolitionist and heir to an immense land fortune. Smith's suffrage-seeking plan was endorsed by Frederick Douglass and most leading Black abolitionists. The antislavery reformer John Brown was such an advocate that in 1849 he moved his family to Timbuctoo, a new Black Adirondack settlement in the woods. Smith's plan was prescient, anticipating Black suffrage reform, affirmative action, environmental distributive justice, and community-based racial equity more than a century before these were points of public policy. But when the response to Smith's offer fell radically short of his high hopes, Smith's zeal cooled. Timbuctoo, Freemen's Home, Blacksville and other settlements were forgotten. History would marginalize this Black community for 150 years. In The Black Woods, Amy Godine recovers a robust history of Black pioneers who carved from the wilderness a future for their families and their civic rights. Her immersive story returns the Black pioneers and their descendants to their rightful place at the center of this history. With stirring accounts of racial justice, and no shortage of heroes, The Black Woods amplifies the unique significance of the Adirondacks in the American imagination.
On both sides of the stage improv-comedy's popularity has increased exponentially throughout the 1980s and '90s and into the new millennium. Presto! An original song is created out of thin air. With nothing but a suggestion from the audience, daring young improvisers working without a net or a script create hilarious characters, sketches, and songs. Thrilled by the danger, the immediacy, and the virtuosity of improv-comedy, spectators laugh and cheer. American improv-comedy burst onto the scene in the 1950s with Chicago's the Compass Players (best known for the brilliant comedy duo Mike Nichols and Elaine May) and the Second City, which launched the careers of many popular comedians, including Gilda Radner, John Belushi, and Mike Myers. Chicago continues to be a mecca for young performers who travel from faraway places to study improv. At the same time, the techniques of Chicago improv have infiltrated classrooms, workshops, rehearsals, and comedy clubs across North and South America, Europe, Australia, and Japan. Improv's influence is increasingly evident in contemporary films and in interactive entertainment on the internet. Drawing on the experiences of working improvisers, Whose Improv Is It Anyway? provides a never-before-published account of developments beyond Second City's mainstream approach to the genre. This fascinating history chronicles the origins of "the Harold," a sophisticated new "long-form" style of improv developed in the '80s at ImprovOlympic and details the importance and pitfalls of ComedySports. Here also is a backstage glimpse at the Annoyance Theatre, best known on the national scene for its production of The Real Live Brady Bunch. Readers will get the scoop on the recent work of players who, feeling excluded by early improv's "white guys in ties," created such independent groups as the Free Associates and the African American troupe Oui Be Negroes. There is far more to the art of improv than may be suggested by the sketches on Saturday Night Live or the games on Whose Line Is It Anyway? This history, an insider's look at the evolution of improv-comedy in Chicago, reveals the struggles, the laughter, and the ideals of mutual support, freedom, and openness that have inspired many performers. It explores the power games, the gender inequities, and the racial tensions that can emerge in improvised performance, and it shares the techniques and strategies veteran players use to combat these problems. Improv art is revealed to be an art of compromise, a fragile negotiation between the poles of process and product. The result, as shown here, can be exciting, shimmering, magical, and not exclusively the property of any troupe or actor.
What if the start to your day was falling into the toilet, that caused you to miss your carpool, that in turn caused you to get to school late, that ultimately caused you to miss getting one of the decent parts in the upcoming Thanksgiving play? That is exactly what happens to fourth-grader Jelly Bean on the day we first meet her. Things only go downhill from there and no one at home seems to have much time for her. Except Roger-Over, her beloved dog.
My sister is missing! Has anyone seen her? I am a walking disaster not only because I'm sick with a nasty cold but also because the last conversation I had with Lillian was of her choosing to disown me as her sister. What if I never see her again? I can't even fathom the thought! So, I did the only thing I knew to do- I enlisted the help of Marcelo AND Brady. Yes, I was making them work together, and they didn't like it. Not one bit. Everything was going wrong from the torrential downpour of rain that seemed to be never-ending to me being run off the road and winding up in jail. Yes, jail. But nothing was going to stop me from getting Lillian back, even if it meant cooperating with the criminals and handing over what they were needing to commit their next crime. With all the chaos taking place, one thing I came to realize was certain- When it Rains it Pours.
Stella Rivers has a stalker. Why this is my problem? I have no idea. Ever since she decided we needed to bury the hatchet, she thinks we are the best of friends. Of course I love a good mystery to solve, but this is more than I bargained for when helping Stella ends up with her living in my home and even wearing my clothes. She is disrupting my life, including my love life. Things are going great with Brady, and I would like for it to continue as so, without Stella in the middle of every date we have. Not to mention all the dates I'm having to go on hoping to figure out which guy has his sights on Stella. Including his camera sights. Things take a turn for the worse when Stella's stalker becomes my own. Not only do I have to keep my eye out for the stalker, but I also have to watch out for my new next-door neighbor who makes me cringe each time I encounter him. I know he is up to no good. I just need the opportunity to prove it. With each image that turns up from the stalker, a new level of fear comes with it and I learn real quick the truth of the meaning- A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words.
How I ended up going from having my heart broken by Brady to being married to Marcelo was beyond me. Okay, it was a fake marriage. But still. I had booked a cruise to get away for some desperately needed downtime, which ended up being the exact opposite of what I got. Instead, I was coaxed into working a case with Marcelo, which was what I had always wanted. Not so much having to deal with Marcelo, but being invited to work an undercover investigation. The problem was, having to pretend to be Marcelo’s wife became more than I bargained for as emotions skyrocketed and I didn’t know how to tame them. Solving the case wasn’t the only thing on my mind. Now I needed to figure out how I was going to get off this ship with my heart intact. How could a person fall for someone when their heart was already broken? This was Just Another Day In Paradise.
The desire to become a spy was greater now than ever before. After saving Marcelo's life and stopping the criminal— I was addicted. I was ready to do whatever it took to make my dreams of being an undercover agent turn into a reality. The problem was, I had too many distractions— starting with Marcelo, the Italian hottie, my arch-enemy popping back up into my life, the banquet I was in charge of, and the handsome Private Investigator who was willing to teach me the basics. It was time I figured out some answers to the millions of questions I had— regardless of the lengths I had to go to get them. But would someone stop me before I could? I didn't know who I could trust and who I couldn't, and I wondered if I was biting off more than I could chew.

The "wisest and most captivating novel" (Boston Globe) from the author of the bestselling The Valley of Amazement and the new memoir Where the Past Begins Set in San Francisco and in a remote village of Southwestern China, Amy Tan's The Hundred Secret Senses is a tale of American assumptions shaken by Chinese ghosts and broadened with hope. In 1962, five-year-old Olivia meets the half-sister she never knew existed, eighteen-year-old Kwan from China, who sees ghosts with her "yin eyes." Decades later, Olivia describes her complicated relationship with her sister and her failing marriage, as Kwan reveals her story, sweeping the reader into the splendor and violence of mid-nineteenth century China. With her characteristic wisdom, grace, and humor, Tan conjures up a story of the inheritance of love, its secrets and senses, its illusions and truths.
This engaging text takes an evenhanded approach to major theoretical paradigms in evaluation and builds a bridge from them to evaluation practice. Numerous sample studies—many with reflective commentary from the evaluators—reveal the process through which an evaluator incorporates a paradigm into an actual research project. It offers balanced coverage of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches. Useful pedagogical features include: *Examples of large- and small-scale evaluations from multiple disciplines. *Beginning-of-chapter reflection questions that set the stage for the material covered. *"Extending your thinking" questions and practical activities that help readers apply particular theoretical paradigms in their own evaluation projects. *Relevant Web links, including pathways to more details about sampling, data collection, and analysis. *Boxes offering a closer look at key evaluation concepts and additional studies. *Checklists for readers to determine if they have followed recommended practice.

A warm evening in early June of the year 1812 showed the streets of Baltimore city gay with groups of people crowding the steps of the houses, or sauntering up and down from corner to corner. Slender girls with arms around each other, circles of children merrily piping out some ring-around-a-rosy, young men stopping before this or that door for a few minutes’ chat,—all served to make a lively scene. Lettice Hopkins, in short-waisted gown of sprigged muslin, stood with one slippered foot tapping impatiently the marble step before her uncle’s door. “Is yuh see him, Miss Letty?” asked a little colored boy who stopped his occupation of sliding down the cellar door to make his inquiry. “No, I don’t,” Lettice returned petulantly, “and poor old Mrs. Flynn is moaning and going on because her Patrick is aboard the vessel, and she thinks he’s drowned. Run to the corner, Danny, and see if there is a sign of your master.” She sat down on the step and looked anxiously in the direction of the street corner toward which Danny was making his way, taking time in doing so, and stopping frequently to switch a chip from the running water in the gutter, or to send a pebble hopping over the cobblestones. “It certainly is warm for so early in June,” Lettice remarked, as she vigorously fanned herself. “You’d do well to come out here, Aunt Martha,” she continued, addressing some one in the hall behind her. “There is a breath outside, but little indoors. Don’t you think uncle must be here soon? He surely cannot be at the wharf all this time.” “Perhaps he is,” her aunt answered. “It is a week since the vessel was due, and in good weather that is too long. It is nothing of a run from here to Boston and back, and your uncle has reason to be somewhat anxious, especially in these days.” “These days,” Lettice repeated; “that is what father is always saying, as if these were not good enough days.” Mrs. Hopkins did not answer, but instead, asked, “Where is your father?” “Down at the Fountain Inn, I suppose; it is where he always goes of an evening. They have a deal to talk about, it seems, down there.” “They have, indeed, but isn’t that your uncle coming now?” Mrs. Hopkins had come out upon the step and was peering out into the dimly lighted street. “To be sure it is,” Lettice replied. “I will go to meet him, for Mr. Gilmore will stop him if I don’t get him over on this side of the street.” She started off with rapid step, her light scarf floating from her shoulders as she walked.
