This book examines a regional culture as it was subjected to acute interpretative stress for much of the nineteenth century. This is done through a study of three key facets to contemporary Hindu thought - a possible interplay between the divinely ordained and human history, innovative extensions in the meaning of older terms like 'Dharma', and new moral and cultural theories around select mythical figures and traditionally revered texts.

This work focuses exclusively on Rabindranath Tagore's sermons/addresses and miscellaneous prose writings in Bengali. With a substantive introduction by Amiya P. Sen identifying various stages in the evolution of Tagore's religious thoughts, beginning from about the 1880s, the book includes representative writings from each of the stage so identified. It brings to light some of Tagore's speeches and writings on religion in the pre-Gitanjali phase, which are largely unknown and un-appreciated. The sermons collectively known as Santiniketan (delivered between 1908 and 1914) and which perhaps carry his deepest spiritual insights is a case in this point. Among other important essays of this genre yet un-translated and relatively unknown are those included in the collections Dharma (Religion), Alochana(Criticism), Parichay(Introduction), and Sanchay (Collection). This volume intends to recover them in translation.
A saint, a reformer, an avatar of Lord Krishna—Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1533) is perceived as all these and many others. In this book on Chaitanya, Amiya P. Sen focuses on the discourses surrounding the mystic’s life, which ended rather mysteriously at the age of 48. Written in a lucid manner and for a wider audience, this book is a fresh attempt to historically reconstruct Chaitanya’s life and times in Bengal and Odisha, as well as Vrindavan, the key centre of medieval Vaishnavism in north India. This work critically evaluates how Chaitanya has been understood contemporaneously and posthumously, particularly as an icon in colonial Bengal. Addressing an important gap in scholarship, which hitherto concentrated on religious and philosophical discourses, Sen offers a full-length biographical account of Nimai or Gaur by drawing on a wide range of sources in English and Bengali. Raja Rammohun Roy (1774—1833) was a great champion of liberty and civil rights in colonial India. He was also a true cosmopolitan who envisioned a world without borders. A tireless crusader for religious and social reform, Rammohun attempted a progressive reinterpretation of Hinduism and tried to improve the lot of socially marginalized groups such as women. Yet, in spite of his lofty public presence, Rammohun was a hugely controversial figure.
