Th e art of vernacular painting in India is not only varied and rich but also intriguing for several reasons. With such observations the book addresses certain issues, like the validity of the historical information on Indian Art that excludes vernacular trends. The information on vernacular art in India has either been ignored such as in ancient literary discourses or inadvertently misconstrued within the theoretical purviews of modern days. If the hierarchy of the Hindu caste system has marginalised the culture of the lower rung groups, the lexicon of twentieth century anthropological studies has seen this art as material evidence of undeveloped societies; both creating the same value: to be patronised but not ‘art’. Can art be weighed on a scale of development? Arguments have been developed within the specifi c focus on scroll paintings by the itinerant painter bards in Bengal. Th e bardic tradition has been known to exist in India since a pre-Christian era and still continues within two vibrant trends of vernacular art forms – Bangla and Santhal pat. Th e book redefi nes and repositions the notion of art with contemporary folk art. As the picture Plates are self-evident, the book draws attention on a world of art that has not been present in Indian Art History.
Memoir of an Artist is a compelling account of an unpredictable life that stretches through India, Nigeria, and Paris. As a student, he was a witness to the student revolt in Paris in 1968; in the seventies, he was in Nigeria observing the post-Biafra scenario as a teacher in the university. As a product of institutional education that shaped and groomed the new artists, he realizes the impact of Eurocentric dialogue on Indian art so imposing that it makes Indian art in perpetual transit. Again, in the process of creating dialogue within Kolkata life, author discovers contemporary art indeed has no social connectivity; thus, the educated progressive is unable to dialogue with the progressing art. Indian modernism has become a manufactured brand within art commerce, aligned to global marketing. Meanwhile, life has many spectrums, and the author has observed the modernistic agenda exists in contemporary art, as in many activities of Indian life, but each is like an island without connectivity.
Two genders made by nature coexisted comfortably forever, till about a few hundred years ago when men and women started identifying themselves differently. These identities started hardening over time and today they appear to be a different species in many situations... Sometimes laugh-out-loud, at times, deeply poignant, and at other times, provoking and questioning, The End of Romance is a fantastic, one-of-its-kind take on patriarchy and feminism, rights and privileges, abuse and consent, and cultures and laws related to men-women conflicts. Peppered with anecdotes, real-life incidents and everyday stories, the book discusses the natural, cultural and religious influences on the man-woman relationship and how this has evolved over time. The author asks questions few would ever utter: Is our society increasingly becoming anti-men? If so, will this lead to any good? Are gender dynamics always tilted only to benefit one gender? Can we ever achieve equality? These are debated with an analysis of the privileges of women and the abuse of men, a discussion on the prevailing myths, followed by recommendations on how the relationship can be brought back to equal. Unabashed, hilarious, and at times caustic, The End of Romance signals what most of us miss: Oppressive societies do not survive, whoever it may benefit at the moment.
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical and experimental studies of atomic optical bistability and multistability, and their dynamical properties in systems with two- and three-level inhomogeneously-broadened atoms inside an optical cavity. By making use of the modified linear absorption and dispersion, as well as the greatly enhanced nonlinearity in the three-level electromagnetically induced transparency system, the optical bistablity and efficient all-optical switching can be achieved at relatively low laser powers, which can be well controlled and manipulated. Until now, the rapid rate of progress in applications of multilevel systems in cross-disciplinary field has made it difficult to newcomers to the field to obtain a broad overview of this topic. This monograph will serve the purpose.

This decisive account of the role of nonviolence in Islam and Muslim societies, both historically and in current times, chronicles an often-obscured but longstanding pacifist tradition. "Islam" Means Peace: Understanding the Muslim Principle of Nonviolence Today provides a rebuttal to general misperceptions about the religion by documenting its rich tradition of nonviolence. To that end, the book examines the sources of Islamthe Qur'an, the main religious text of Islam, and the Hadith, the deeds and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. It contests the prevalent notion that Islam is built on violence in part by illuminating the role of the tolerant, mystical tradition of Sufism in Islam, while at the same time examining the misunderstood place of jihad in the religion. The book is not, however, a historical or theological treatise. Rather, it focuses on the tradition of nonviolence in modern Muslim societies. By spotlighting recent peaceful protest movements in Muslim communities, the book underscores the truly global and multicultural nature of the Islamic tradition of nonviolence. The findings here will be invaluable for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, revealing an alternative tradition both can embrace.

First published in 1997, this study is one of the forerunners in the area of urban land market and land price studies on a Third World city, focusing on Lucknow City in Uttar Pradesh, India, and exploring house prices, economic changes and construction. Amitabh responds to the 2nd Habitat Conference of 1996, which realised that housing conditions for lower income group people in most Third World cities have not improved, especially with regards to tenure, affordability and overall housing quality.
After years of fighting vicious secret wars in distant, obscure locations, Gautam Shukla heads to the hills for a life of quiet retirement. During a brief trip to Delhi, he meets Ruth, a striking young Israeli security officer and, while out jogging with her one morning, is witness to a highly professional 'hit' on a political figure in the heart of Lutyens' Delhi. As Gautam gets drawn into the hunt for the assassin, disturbing events begin to unfold close to his mountain retreat. An international drug cartel is building an opium-poppy-growing base in the mountains and has come uncomfortably close to Gautam's estate. Gautam must now not only help track down the assassin but also foil all attempts to convert the pristine - and until now peaceful - Kumaoni countryside into a deadly nest of crime and violence.
