Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered one-dimensional systems that possess fascinating electronic, chemical and mechanical properties. They exhibit metallic or semiconducting behavior depending on the nanotube diameter and chirality, and they are ultrarobust and lightweight. Moreover, their surface can be chemically activated thus being able to establish different types of bonds between the carbon nanotube surface and a large number of chemical species; for instance, they could be introduced into a polymeric matrix improving its mechanical or electronic properties. In addition, CNTs are able to host different species in their hollow core, such as ferromagnetic clusters, molecules, and gases. Nowadays, synthesis techniques have achieved control of the length and diameter of CNTs, which constitutes a step forward toward applications. In this chapter, we address the issue of using CNTs as fundamental building blocks for constructing three-dimensional (3D) networks. Here, we present a review of the experimental and theoretical investigations on the formation of 3D networks using CNTs as the main component. In addition, the latest advances on the synthesis and characterization of different carbon nanostructures involving CNTs such as branches, junctions and foams are discussed.

This rich ethnographic study explores the life and work of successful marabout women in Dakar. It is set against the background of their private family lives, of developments in Senegalese society, and of global changes. While including female experts in spirit possession and plant-based healing, it also gives a rare insight in the work of women who offer Islamic knowledge such as Arabic astrology, numerology, divination and prayer sessions. With the analysis of marabout women's work this study sheds light on the ways in which women's authority in esoteric knowledge is negotiated, legitimated, and publicly recognised in Dakar. The study focuses especially upon marabout women's strategies to gain their clients' trust. Reference to rural areas is a significant element in this process. This study thus contributes to an understanding of the gendered way in which trust and scepticism are related to marabouts' work and of the role of a connection between Dakar and the rural areas therein.

Processual archaeologists seek to explain variability in the static archaeological record we observe in the present as a necessary first step toward learning how to learn about the operation of cultural dynamics in the past. The approach is a diverse and productive one that focuses on developing learning strategies. Researchers pursuing processual archaeology have already discovered a great deal about the archaeological record and about past dynamics, and there is a huge potential for building on the foundation laid thus far. The contributors to this volume provide clearly written research articles that are easily accessible to upper-level undergraduates and professional archaeologists. Although the papers do not focus on a single region, time period, or domain of observation (e.g. settlement patterns or lithics or site structure), they are integrated by shared goals for archaeology. This book clearly demonstrates that processual archaeology, far from having been replaced by post-processual archaeology, is becoming more and more powerful as our analytic sophistication and knowledge of the archaeological record grow.
