Amber Guinness paints such a dreamy, evocative picture of her home in the Tuscan countryside and of the sumptuous feasts she cooks there. I long to be there with her and to eat everything in this book.' Skye McAlpine, author of A Table in Venice 'A truly beautiful book with food as colourful as paintings and thoughtful menus guided by the Tuscan seasons.' Emiko Davies, author of Torta della Nonna 'A peculiar attribute of the landscape surrounding Arniano is the ever-changing light. Early in the morning, there is an extraordinary mist that sits in the valley and interweaves through the hills, allowing just the tops to show above the smoky clouds. These changes bring with them new moods and shadows, drawing our painters to different views and areas of the garden throughout the day. By the evening, everything has altered again, and there are often intense sunsets, bringing silhouettes from the trees and much darker, richer, olive colours.' There are many farmhouses in Tuscany, but few are quite so magical as Arniano. It is here, in this 18th-century podere, that Amber Guinness grew up and learned to cook. And it is here that she established The Arniano Painting School, a residential painting course and immersive art and food experience. 'As I look through the recipes and think about the common thread that binds them, I realise that they all exemplify a fundamental principle of Italian home cooking. Which is that simplicity - and keeping ingredients as close to their original form as possible - leads to the most delicious and rewarding food. The beauty of Italian cooking is that it is not about fancy sauces or preparation techniques. Rather, it is about bringing out the best in what you are cooking, through patience, constant tasting and the development of flavour - sometimes using nothing but some olive oil and salt.' Filled with recipes for classic dishes and cocktails, feast curation, seasonal menu suggestions and notes on an Italian pantry and wines, A House Party in Tuscany will transport you to the Tuscan countryside and bring the conviviality of Arniano to your table.
Welcome to the Tyrrhenian Sea, home to la dolce vita, sun-drenched islands and seaside towns where even the simplest trattoria has an effortless glamour. Following on from the success of her first book, A House Party in Tuscany, food writer Amber Guinness travels from the Tuscan coast down through Lazio and Campania via Naples and the Amalfi Coast and on to northern Sicily in her new book Italian Coastal. Along the way, Amber delves into the history, stories and flavours that have come home to her kitchen and shaped her food philosophy. Amber's quest for maximum flavour with minimal effort shines through in sixty delicious and achievable recipes that will bring an authentic mouthful of coastal Italy to your table: crostini with ricotta and 'nduja, zucchini and mint lasagne; tomato linguine with capers; seabass with pistachio and almonds; Neapolitan vinegary fried zucchini; potato and caper salad from Salina; raspberry tiramisu and the ultimate Amalfi lemon cream cake. Inspired by the markets and food of summer holidays by the beach, Italian Coastal is a fusion of recipe book, travelogue, and memoir - with sumptuous food and travel photography throughout - that will transport readers to the sunny Mediterranean. 'Breathtakingly beautiful, Italian Coastal is transportive and filled with recipes I want to immediately cook.' - Julia Busuttil Nishimura, author of Around the Table 'My mouth is watering, and I'm packing my bags. Such a beautiful, evocative book.' - Georgina Hayden, author of Nistisima 'This exceptional book will transport you to the romantic, rolling and rugged coastline surrounding the west of Italy with its rich and varied landscapes and history. Illustrated with evocative images, beautiful stories and completely delicious recipes, this is classic Amber Guinness, so beautiful.' - Rachel Allen, author of Soup Broth Bread 'A magical tastescape from Tuscany to Sicily, with mouth-watering and authentic recipes.' - Clodagh McKenna, author and TV presenter

The Buildings of the Malting Industry is a fascinating book on the buildings that have helped make our much loved beer over the centuries. Malt is one of the main ingredients of beer, yet the buildings in which it was and is now produced have received very little attention, although most towns and many villages had their own malthouse and kiln. This is the first book to address the paucity of detail on maltings which historically were to be found in all English counties. Today evidence for a malthouse may just be a name on a building or street. However, where they survive the pyramidal roofs clearly demonstrate the presence of a malthouse as do other less recognisable features. This book gives details of early malt kilns and shows how they changed over the centuries. Early buildings were essentially vernacular ones but by the mid-19th century some firms were using specialist architects. Then in the 20th century there was more engineering input to new maltings, in particular with the development of the pneumatic process. This once widespread industry is now mainly confined to the eastern side of the country. Elsewhere surviving maltings have been converted to other uses and examples of these are given. There are illustrations of the exteriors and interiors of malthouses and kilns which show some of the developments and how some buildings have been reused.
Lady Gaga represents both the height of celebrity and a disruption of the norms surrounding the social position. This book charts the way the pop star manages the celebrity persona in her relationships with her fans, the development of her gender identity, her parodying of other celebrities, and her navigation of the legal and economic system that make up the music industry. Much of Gaga's ability to maintain ownership of her identity comes from her early decisions to characterize herself as a performance artist. For Gaga, this means living the persona 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Gaga mimicks celebrity life in a self-conscious way that makes the mimicry apparent. Her performance of celebrity is an on-going project--despite what she may claim, she was not born this way. The excess of her celebrity is magnified by her title: Mother Monster. Historically, media narratives of celebrities, monsters, and mothers have centered on uncontrolled excesses that must be contained. Gaga adopts these personas, but refuses to submit to the containment that comes with each. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
