Gut Anthro tells the fascinating story of how a sociocultural anthropologist developed a collaborative “anthropology of microbes” with a human microbial ecologist to address global health crises across disciplines. It asks: what would it mean for anthropology to act with science? Based partly at a preeminent U.S. lab studying the human microbiome, the Center for Genome Sciences at Washington University, and partly at a field site in Bangladesh studying infant malnutrition, it examines how microbes travel between human guts in the “field” and in microbiome laboratories, influencing definitions of health and disease, and how the microbiome can change our views on evolution, agency, and life. As lab scientists studied the interrelationships between gut microbes and malnutrition in resource-poor countries, Amber Benezra explored ways to reconcile the scale and speed differences between the lab, the intimate biosocial practices of Bangladeshi mothers and their children, and the looming structural violence of poverty. In vital ways, Gut Anthro is about what it means to collaborate—with mothers, local field researchers in Bangladesh, massive philanthropic global health organizations, with the microbiome scientists, and, of course, with microbes. It follows microbes through various enactments in scientific research—microbes as kin, as data, and as race. Revealing how racial categories are used in microbiome research, Benezra argues that microbial differences need transdisciplinary collaboration to address racial health disparities without reifying race as a straightforward biological or social designation. Bariatric surgery rates have increased exponentially, both within the United States and worldwide. At a time when dieting is widespread throughout the US and beyond, bariatric surgery, most commonly gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, is one of the only effective interventions for rapid and sustained weight loss. The surgeries, however, are not without their controversy. Public perceptions of surgery recipients often paint them as lazy for taking the easy way out, and pictures of the bypassed gut and reduced stomach often provoke shivers of revulsion. Individuals who experience surgery must deal with such perceptions, while also becoming accustomed to their dramatically changed physical bodies. This book is based on four years of ethnographic research in one particular bariatric program in the US. The key theme of the book centers on the concept of physical weight, as well as the less visible social weights that accompany it. In Lazy, Crazy, and Disgusting, medical anthropologists Alexandra Brewis and Amber Wutich explore a darker side of public health: that well-intentioned public health campaigns can create new and damaging stigma, even when they are otherwise successful. Brewis and Wutich present a novel, synthetic argument about how stigmas act as a massive driver of global disease and suffering, killing or sickening billions every year. They focus on three of the most complex, difficult-to-fix global health efforts: bringing sanitation to all, treating mental illness, and preventing obesity. They explain how and why humans so readily stigmatize, how this derails ongoing public health efforts, and why this process invariably hurts people who are already at risk. They also explore how new stigmas enter global health so easily and consider why destigmatization is so very difficult. Finally, the book offers potential solutions that may be able to prevent, challenge, and fix stigma. Stigma elimination, Brewis and Wutich conclude, must be recognized as a necessary and core component of all global health efforts. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered one-dimensional systems that possess fascinating electronic, chemical and mechanical properties. They exhibit metallic or semiconducting behavior depending on the nanotube diameter and chirality, and they are ultrarobust and lightweight. Moreover, their surface can be chemically activated thus being able to establish different types of bonds between the carbon nanotube surface and a large number of chemical species; for instance, they could be introduced into a polymeric matrix improving its mechanical or electronic properties. In addition, CNTs are able to host different species in their hollow core, such as ferromagnetic clusters, molecules, and gases. Nowadays, synthesis techniques have achieved control of the length and diameter of CNTs, which constitutes a step forward toward applications. In this chapter, we address the issue of using CNTs as fundamental building blocks for constructing three-dimensional (3D) networks. Here, we present a review of the experimental and theoretical investigations on the formation of 3D networks using CNTs as the main component. In addition, the latest advances on the synthesis and characterization of different carbon nanostructures involving CNTs such as branches, junctions and foams are discussed.

Media attention can play a profound role in whether or not officials act on a policy issue, but how policy issues make the news in the first place has remained a puzzle. Why do some issues go viral and then just as quickly fall off the radar? How is it that the media can sustain public interest for months in a complex story like negotiations over Obamacare while ignoring other important issues in favor of stories on “balloon boy?” With Making the News, Amber Boydstun offers an eye-opening look at the explosive patterns of media attention that determine which issues are brought before the public. At the heart of her argument is the observation that the media have two modes: an “alarm mode” for breaking stories and a “patrol mode” for covering them in greater depth. While institutional incentives often initiate alarm mode around a story, they also propel news outlets into the watchdog-like patrol mode around its policy implications until the next big news item breaks. What results from this pattern of fixation followed by rapid change is skewed coverage of policy issues, with a few receiving the majority of media attention while others receive none at all. Boydstun documents this systemic explosiveness and skew through analysis of media coverage across policy issues, including in-depth looks at the waxing and waning of coverage around two issues: capital punishment and the “war on terror.” Making the News shows how the seemingly unpredictable day-to-day decisions of the newsroom produce distinct patterns of operation with implications—good and bad—for national politics.
