Extensive changes to placental invasion occur at three key points in primate phylogeny: the haplorhine ancestor, the hominoid ancestor, and along the human lineage. The study tests the hypothesis that MMP9 evolved under positive natural selection at these three phylogenetic points. Complete MMP9 genomic DNA sequences (7.6 Kb) were generated from six primate species. These were analyzed for the action of positive natural selection along with published MMP9 sequences from four additional primates and eight non-primate outgroups.
