Cultural geography and the social sciences have seen a rise in the use of creative methods with which to understand and represent everyday life and place. Conversely, many artists are producing work that centres on ideas of place and space and utilising empirical research methods that have a resonance with geographers. This book contributes to the body of literature emerging from such creative approaches to place. Drawing together theory and practice from cultural geography, anthropology and graphic design, this book proposes an interdisciplinary geo/graphic process for interrogating and re/presenting everyday life and place. A diverse set of research projects highlights participatory and autoethnographic approaches to the research. The sites of the projects are varied, encompassing the commercial space of grocery shops, cafés and restaurants, the private, domestic space of the home, and a Scottish World Heritage site. The theoretical context of each project highlights the transferability of the geo/graphic process, with place being variously framed within discussions of food, multi-culturalism and belonging; home, collecting and meaningful possessions; and, materiality, memory and affect. A searing exposé on the whiteness of running, a supposedly egalitarian sport, and a call to reimagine the industry “Runners know that running brings us to ourselves. But for Black people, the simple act of running has never been so simple. It is a declaration of the right to move through the world. If running is claiming public space, why, then, does it feel like a negotiation?” Running saved Alison Désir’s life. At rock bottom and searching for meaning and structure, Désir started marathon training, finding that it vastly improved both her physical and mental health. Yet as she became involved in the community and learned its history, she realized that the sport was largely built with white people in mind. Running While Black draws on Désir’s experience as an endurance athlete, activist, and mental health advocate to explore why the seemingly simple, human act of long distance running for exercise and health has never been truly open to Black people. Weaving historical context—from the first recreational running boom to the horrific murder of Ahmaud Arbery—together with her own story of growth in the sport, Désir unpacks how we got here and advocates for a world where everyone is free to safely experience the life-changing power of movement. As America reckons with its history of white supremacy across major institutions, Désir argues that, as a litmus test for an inclusive society, the fitness industry has the opportunity to lead the charge—fulfilling its promise of empowerment.
Alison Armstrong’s involvement with Anglo-Irish literature has resulted in a literary cooking, The Joyce of Cooking (Station Hill Press, 1986) and a volume of textual scholarship, “The Herne’s Egg” by W.B. Yeats: the Manuscript Materials (Cornell University Press, 1993). Her essays, stories, poetry, and reviews have appeared in various publications, including American Arts Quarterly, BOMB, Exquisite Corpse, Sea Kayaker, Notre Dame Review, PN Review. This volume examines Highland society during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries highlighting the extent to which kinship and clientage were organising principles within clanship. Based on clans located in the central and eastern Highlands this study goes some way to addressing the imbalance in Highland historiography which hitherto has concentrated largely on the west Highlands and islands. Focusing initially on internal clan structure, the study broadens into an analysis of local politics within the context of regional and national affairs, raising questions regarding the importance of land and the nature of lordship as well as emphasising the need for Highland history to be integrated further into broader studies of Scottish society during this period.
‘Home’ is a significant geographical and social concept. It is not only a three-dimensional structure, a shelter, but it is also a matrix of social relations and has wide symbolic and ideological meanings; home can be feelings of belonging or of alienation; feelings of home can be stretched across the world, connected to a nation or attached to a house; the spaces and imaginaries of home are central to the construction of people’s identities. Silence is long-established as a spiritual discipline amongst people of faith. However, its examination tends to focus on depictions within texts emerging from religious life and the development of its practices. Latterly, feminist theologians have also highlighted the silencing of women within Christian history. Consequently, silence is often portrayed as a solitary discipline based in norms of male monastic experience or a tool of women’s subjugation. In contrast, this book investigates chosen practices of silence in the lives of Christian women today, evidencing its potential for enabling profound relationality and empowerment within their spiritual journeys. Opening with an exploration of Christianity’s reclamation of practices of silence in the twentieth century, this contemporary ethnographic study engages with wider academic conversations about silence. Its substantive theological and empirical exploration of women’s practices of silence demonstrates that, for some, silence-based prayer is a valued space for encounter and transformation in relationships with God, with themselves and with others. Utilising a methodology that proposes focusing on silence throughout the qualitative research process, this study also illustrates a new model for depicting relational change. Finally, the book urges practical and feminist theologians to re-examine silence’s potential for facilitating the development of more authentic and responsible relationality within people’s lives. This is a unique study that provides new perspectives on practices of silence within Christianity, particularly amongst women.
