Pragmatic instruction has received momentous attention in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) over the last decades. In order to scrutinize the effectiveness of L2 instruction, meta-analyses are warranted; nonetheless, meta-analyses have been largely neglected, despite the fact that they provide a systematic explanation of the findings from the previous studies. Since meta-analysis is flourishing by leaps and bounds in each and every field, pragmatic studies are not the exception, and among miscellaneous constructs and units of analysis in pragmatics, the speech acts of request, apology, and refusal are investigated in this book. To bridge this gap, this book mainly presents the variables which can moderate the effectiveness of L2 instruction such as age, gender, proficiency, outcome measures, psycholinguistic features, research design, and treatment types. The first chapter of the book outlines the theoretical underpinnings of the study, accentuating the importance of conducting meta-analysis in this field of study. The second chapter elaborates on the empirical studies and a thorough review of the relevant research. The third chapter deals with the design of the study in which the inclusion and exclusion criteria, effect size calculation, coding of the variables, and reliability have been outlined while chapter four presents the obtained outcomes and results of the study. The last chapter describes the final remarks of the study, the limitations, implications, and the directions for future research in the field of pragmatics instruction.

This book explores portrayals and predicaments of the disabled in Arab/Muslim post colonial North African and Middle Eastern societies in genres ranging from classical Arabic scripture to secular popular culture including Francophone Moroccan and Algerian fiction, Egyptian Middle Eastern film, as well as Tunisian song and television. In line with theorists Aijaz Ahmad and Ato Quayson’s objection to reading Third World literature as “national allegory,” The author argues that rather than being metaphors or allegories, disabled characters represent persons with disabilities in their culture and act as a mirror upon their changing societies. Contemporary Maghrebians and Muslims with disabilities find themselves at an intersection of conflicting and competing cultures, their native Islamic culture and Westernizing lifestyles. In the rush to import everything Western, despite humanitarian Islamic teachings regarding the disabled, are often abandoned. In situations of fundamentalist menace, the disabled, who tend to be the most vulnerable and abused fraction of Arab/Muslim society, suffer the worst, especially women.

However, before I am called home, I want to share some of my life stories and memories with this book so people can learn more about my family, my brother, and me through the eyes of a member of the Clay/Ali family. I was there from the beginning and witnessed first-hand how our family’s lives were changed as 'The Greatest of all Time' emerged from being a fun-loving kid on the streets of Louisville, Kentucky, to becoming an icon recognized around the world. The memories I share in this book are ones that I will treasure forever. Living through these experiences helped shape my life and made me the man I am today. I can say for a fact that no other man took as many punches from the champ as I did as a result of the training and sparring sessions that we had over the years together. It is my hope that after reading my story and accounts of key events in my family's life, you will walk away with an even greater appreciation of the Clay/Ali family name, history and legacy.
