This authored monograph presents the state-of-the-art improvements in 2D materials, focusing on their most significant achievements, as well as recent emergence and potential applications. The book discusses synthetic protocols as well as the structural chemistry and physical properties of various 2D materials and explores their energy-related utilization. The main energy harvesting applications such as piezoelectric generators, solar cells and hydrogen evolution reactions are analyzed, while special focus is also given to the related energy storage technologies such as rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors and wearable energy storage devices. This volume sheds new light on 2D materials and their applications and will be a useful tool for graduates and academics working in the fields of materials science, materials physics and chemistry.
In this thesis, the author makes several contributions to the study of design of graphical materials. The thesis begins with a review of the relationship between design and aesthetics, and the use of mathematical models to capture this relationship. Then, a novel method for linking linguistic concepts to colors using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation Dual Topic Model is proposed. Next, the thesis studies the relationship between aesthetics and spatial layout by formalizing the notion of visual balance. Applying principles of salience and Gaussian mixture models over a body of about 120,000 aesthetically rated professional photographs, the author provides confirmation of Arnhem's theory about spatial layout. The thesis concludes with a description of tools to support automatically generating personalized design.
New, Now, Next. Consumers' ever growing appetite to acquire new products and their short courtship with them has kept manufacturers busy not only expending resources at an alarming rate, but also depleting these resources and giving rise to waste and pollution at a correspondingly increasing and disturbing rate. Traditional manufacturing methods th
Self-Cleaning of Surfaces and Water Droplet Mobility deals with the self-cleaning of hydrophobic surfaces. Chapters cover the basics of wetting states of fluids and surface characteristics in terms of texture topology and free energy. The self-cleaning aspects of surfaces, such as various synthesizing and fabrication processes are then introduced and discussed, along with environmental dust properties, including elemental compositions, particle sizes and shapes, and their chemo-mechanics characteristics. In addition, mud formation in humid air, as well as ambient and dry mud adhesion on optically transparent surfaces is explored, as is water droplet dynamics on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, amongst other topics. The book fills the gap between the physical fundamentals of surface energy and texture characteristics for practical applications of surface cleaning and provides a basic understanding of the self-cleaning of surfaces that will be idea for academics, researchers and students. - Showcases the fundamental aspects of the self-cleaning of surfaces - Includes practical applications in energy and other sectors - Contains a review of the characterization of environmental dust on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces - Discusses the fabrication and optimization of surfaces towards self-cleaning - Presents practical applications of the self-cleaning of surfaces via water droplet mobility
First prize winner, Anesthesia Book Category, British Medical Association 2012 Medical Book Competition Lavishly illustrated by clear line diagrams and photographs, Ward's Anaesthetic Equipment is a highly accessible single source to aid understanding of the key principles behind equipment function and design. This sixth edition of the classic reference text on anaesthetic equipment is again extensively revised to reflect the very latest advances. Ward's is an invaluable resource for qualified anaesthetists, as well as essential reading for those in training or approaching examinations such as those of the Primary and Final Fellowship in the UK and Ireland. Trainees in Intensive Care Medicine, anaesthetic assistants, operating department practitioners, electronic and biomedical engineers in hospitals and manufacturers' representatives will also benefit from this most trusted guide. Provides a simple and comprehensive explanation of the function of anaesthetic equipment, ensuring its safe use in clinical practice Covers the relevant syllabus required by the FRCA and similar exams taken by trainee anaesthetists Clear line diagrams explain the working principles of each piece of equipment The physics and technology of ultrasound gains a devoted chapter, as does patient warming. There are enhancements on depth of anaesthesia monitoring, error management and ultrasound imaging in regional anaesthesia. Particular coverage of supraglottic airway devices substantially augments an extended chapter on airway equipment. Updates throughout, including on the anaesthetic workstation, infusion devices and equipment for anaesthesia in difficult locations, ensure Ward's remains the most comprehensive and current text on anaesthetic equipment.
