Drawing from a close reading of a broad array of primary sources, this book offers a thematic account of the Iranian intelligentsia from the Constitutional movement of 1905 to the post-1979 revolution. Ali Gheissari shows how in Iran, as in many other countries, intellectuals have been the prime mediators between the forces of tradition and modernity and have contributed significantly to the formation of the modern Iranian self image. His analysis of intellectuals' response to a number of fundamental questions, such as nationalism, identity, and the relation between Islam and modern politics, sheds new light on the factors that led to the Iranian Revolution—the twentieth century's first major departure from Western political ideals—and helps explain the complexities surrounding the reception of Western ideologies in the Middle East.

We must carry out this process in a nuanced and unprecedented meaning, and move beyond the conventional idea of the nation-state as manifested in the West. The National State is the "State of Citizenship", the State of a legal or social contract between Man and the State; the State that serves its people and realizes their ambitions and aspirations regardless of their background and the State that rules by law. It is the State where the law governs all its acts with the citizens and where all are equal before the law. It is the State that truly believes that pluralism is a source of strength and that coexistence is a source of inspiration to all who live on its soil. It is a State of neither a particular race, sect, cult nor an ethnic group. It is not a State of a given superior human race over others. As the State of Citizenship and rule of law, it is not at all the State of nationalistic and/ or racist people.

As a child Ali was raised in Kabul which was often the target for attacks by various warring factions in Afghanistan. At the age of four he and his family survived a direct hit to the house in which they were sheltering, during shelling by the Taliban. At the age of eleven he had to go to work in the market of Mazar-e-Sharif city to prevent his mother and himself from starving to death. His early troubled experiences equipped him with the strength of character to launch himself into the world, alone at the age of thirteen. His first goal was to reach Tehran, the oil rich capital of Iran, which is the dream destination of all young men in the region, where he hoped he would become rich. His adventures had just begun. A series of curious chances lead to success and set back. But it is his eternal optimism, his faith in his God, his impetuous instincts and sheer determination that takes us on a remarkable roller-coaster ride across half the world and that is without passport, visa or money. Some of the things described are shocking, but are never sensationalised. Overall the book conveys his feelings of wonder, sadness, love, and youthful fun.
On 8 February 1971, Marxist revolutionaries attacked the gendarmerie outpost at the village of Siyahkal in Iran’s Gilan province. Barely two months later, the Iranian People’s Fada’i Guerrillas officially announced their existence and began a long, drawn-out urban guerrilla war against the Shah’s regime. In Call to Arms, Ali Rahnema provides a comprehensive history of the Fada’is, beginning by asking why so many of Iran’s best and brightest chose revolutionary Marxism in the face of absolutist rule. He traces how radicalised university students from different ideological backgrounds morphed into the Marxist Fada’is in 1971, and sheds light on their theory, practice and evolution. While the Fada’is failed to directly bring about the fall of the Shah, Rahnema shows they had a lasting impact on society and they ultimately saw their objective achieved.
How did the Shah of Iran become a modern despot? In 1953, Iranian monarch Mohammad-Reza Shah Pahlavi emerged victorious from a power struggle with his prime minister, Mohammad Mosaddeq, thanks to a coup masterminded by Britain and the United States. Mosaddeq believed the Shah should reign not rule, but the Shah was determined that no one would make him a mere symbol. In this meticulous political history, Ali Rahnema details Iran’s slow transition from constitutional to despotic monarchy. He examines the tug of war between the Shah, his political opposition, a nation in search of greater liberty, and successive US administrations with their changing priorities. He shows how the Shah gradually assumed control over the legislature, the judiciary, the executive, and the media, and clamped down on his opponents’ activities. By 1968, the Shah’s turn to despotism was complete. The consequences would be far-reaching.
