Though these strings are unfamiliar to him, virtuous Hari recognizes them for what they are: a hunger for spiritual enlightenment. As so many have before, he sets his feet upon the pilgrim’s path, becoming a wanderer in search of true wisdom. But who can know the ways of the gods, or foretell the twists of fortune? Unbeknownst to Hari, his quest has become the subject of wager between two immortals: Mohini, a pulchritudinous Apsara and the vilely demonic Ravana, who lusts after her. Mohini and Ravana are at an impasse. Both are weary of arguing with each other—but while Mohini’s idea of a happy outcome is to have Ravana go away and leave her alone, Ravana’s ideas run along other lines entirely. They settle upon a contest and a wager, with the loser bound to do the winner’s bidding. Verily, the sages have written that there is a seeker born every minute, but Hari’s journey of discovery is fated to be stranger—and far livelier—than most.

The protagonists of In Rerum Natura lived in a world that the Great Depression and the Second World War dissolved forever. In Rerum Natura tries to recapture the essence of a South Brooklyn version of that world, compounded from ethnic neighborhoods, primal families, and parochial ethics. The love story that carries the novel is, however, universal and timeless, forged from undying Shakespearian metal and, as its title suggests, upon the eternal anvil of Nature’s powerful cycles. The novel’s geo-demographic context is given relief in its language, both that of the narrator and that of his characters. South Brooklyn in the thirties—however nostalgically dulcified its perception in In Rerum Natura—was a hard and unforgiving place. It nevertheless contributed its proportional share of a generation of Americans that, selfishly, learned to survive and even prosper, and, selflessly, managed to change the world.

This book provides a basic approach to the evaluation and chiropractic management of a variety of knee conditions. It provides the reader first a review of anatomy, and then discusses examination, muscle testing, and imaging before moving into therapeutic considerations. Therapy information includes adjusting techniques and exercise procedures; there is also discussion on particular knee conditions. The book desires to provide a basic hands-on approach to evaluation and treatment of the knee, particularly for chiropractic students. It emphasizes motion analysis of joint involvements as the mechanism for using specific chiropractic adjustive procedures. The main audience for this text will be lower trimester chiropractic students. The text is written at a basic level, and so this will likely not be of interest to established practitioners. The author, a known authority on the subject matter, recently passed away. The text is amply illustrated, and there are numerous radiographic images. The chapter on imaging is by far the strongest chapter in the text and is a definite plus for the book. Each procedure is well illustrated, though the line drawings are crude in many cases. Students will find this book useful and a complement to other more comprehensive texts discussing the knee. There is a paucity of references in this text, and many are from texts rather than journal articles. It remains to be seen whether this material will fit into the specific technique requirements of an individual chiropractic college, so the usefulness of this text may vary from college to college. It is likely that this book will be a recommended text, rather than a required one, unless the technique program at acollege is similar to this.
