When one thinks of the wars of the eighteenth century, one thinks of the significant clashes of great military powers: the War of the Spanish Succession and the Battles of Blenheim and Malplaquet, the Great Northern War and the Battles of Narva and Poltava, the War of the Austrian Succession and Fontenoy, the Seven Years War with Roßbach, Leuthen and Zorndorf, or the American War of Independence with Saratoga and Yorktown. All of these engagements appear again and again in the lists of the great battles of world history, and there are reasons why they deserve a place in them. Yet none of them brought an end to the war in which they were fought. Not so the Battle of Kesselsdorf, which is largely forgotten today and will probably never find its way into an anthology of world- historically significant battles yet surely deserves such a place. For the immediate consequence of the victory of the Prussian army under Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau over a Saxon army on the heights near Kesselsdorf was the peace agreement at Dresden. In it, Austria once again renounced its claims to the province of Silesia, which had been lost to Prussia in the First Silesian War. In addition, Prussia rose to the rank of the great European powers and became the regional hegemon in northern Germany, while ambitious Electoral Saxony lost considerable political importance in the Empire and in Europe.

Der Autor hatte über einen Studentenaustausch und ein Praktikum in Miami/USA einen Kontakt zu einem Start-Up-Unternehmen aufgebaut, mit dem zusammen er schliesslich seine Diplomarbeit erarbeitete. Unterstützt wurde er dabei massgeblich von Frau Prof. Dr. Nickerson von der Barry University in Miami, einer Partneruniversität der GSO FH Nürnberg, zu der intensivste Beziehungen bestehen. Das Ziel der Arbeit bestand darin, aufbauend auf das erfolgreiche Business Modell der Firma eAppeals LLC neue Geschäftsfelder in Europa zu identifizieren und zu bewerten. Dazu war es erforderlich, Erfolgsgrundlagen der Firma in den USA zu untersuchen, die Übertragbarkeit der spezifischen Lösungen auf anderen Anwendungen zu überprüfen und schliesslich neue Märkte zu finden und zu vergleichen. Der Verfasser benutzte zu letzterem eine spezifische Methode, nämlich die sog. „Strategische Portfolio Analyse“. Die Struktur der Arbeit ist sehr gut: nach Einführung gibt der Autor einen Überblick über relevante Literaturansätze zum Thema „Business Plan“ (Kap. 2). Anschliessend entwickelt er in Kap. 3 die zugrunde liegende Idee (Kap.3), beschreibt die Firma (Kap. 4) und entwirft dann die methodische Vorgehensweise (Kap. 5). Die Haupteile der Arbeit sind sodann die Marktanalyse bzw. die Suche nach neuen strategischen Geschäftsfeldern (Kap. 6) und schliesslich die Strategische Portfolio Methode (Kap. 7). Die Arbeit überzeugt insgesamt durch ihre kreative und auch gründliche Vorgehensweise. Der Verfasser hat sich insbesondere in den empirischen Teilen tief in die anspruchsvolle Materie hineingearbeitet. Juristische, technische und organisatorische Aspekte werden detailliert untersucht. Die Marktanalyse stützt sich auf eine sehr gute Datenbasis mit aktuellsten Zahlen. Besonders gelungen ist der Teil der Strategischen Portfolioanalyse, in dem der Autor auf ein 8-köpfiges Experten-Team zurückgreift. Diese Experten mit verschiedensten beruflichen Hintergründen bilden eine starke Kompetenz-Gruppe, die durchaus das Know-how und die Erfahrung hat, die gefundenen Märkte zu bewerten. Es ist zu hoffen, dass die gefundenen Ergebnisse zu einer Realisierung führen. Eine gute Grundlage für den Markteinstieg wurde jedenfalls mit dieser Diplomarbeit gelegt. Although there have been other studies of elite administrators in France, Great Britain, Germany, and Russia, John Armstrong has made the first systematic comparison of their roles, especially their inclination to participate in economic development. Drawing on role theory and theories of socialization and recruitment, he analyzes the influences that family, secondary school, specialized university instruction, and in-service experiences have had on administrators. Currents of ideas, class concepts of appropriate role behavior, and organizational peculiarities are also examined as possible influences. By exploring this subject over a long period—in some cases reaching as far back as the seventeenth century—this book shows how changing definitions of administrators' roles reflect their position in society and permit the exploration of changing socialization processes. The long time span also shows how factors such as administrative intervention can change from being marginally important to crucial in affecting economic growth. In the most comprehensive account to date of Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of language, Alexander Stern explores the nature of meaning by putting Benjamin in dialogue with Wittgenstein. Known largely for his essays on culture, aesthetics, and literature, Walter Benjamin also wrote on the philosophy of language. This early work is famously obscure and considered hopelessly mystical by some. But for Alexander Stern, it contains important insights and anticipates—in some respects surpasses—the later thought of a central figure in the philosophy of language, Ludwig Wittgenstein. As described in The Fall of Language, Benjamin argues that “language as such” is not a means for communicating an extra-linguistic reality but an all-encompassing medium of expression in which everything shares. Borrowing from Johann Georg Hamann’s understanding of God’s creation as communication to humankind, Benjamin writes that all things express meanings, and that human language does not impose meaning on the objective world but translates meanings already extant in it. He describes the transformations that language as such undergoes while making its way into human language as the “fall of language.” This is a fall from “names”—language that responds mimetically to reality—to signs that designate reality arbitrarily. While Benjamin’s approach initially seems alien to Wittgenstein’s, both reject a designative understanding of language; both are preoccupied with Russell’s paradox; and both try to treat what Wittgenstein calls “the bewitchment of our understanding by means of language.” Putting Wittgenstein’s work in dialogue with Benjamin’s sheds light on its historical provenance and on the turn in Wittgenstein’s thought. Although the two philosophies diverge in crucial ways, in their comparison Stern finds paths for understanding what language is and what it does.

Following Charles Fillmore’s definition of frames as both organizers of experience and tools for understanding, the monograph attempts to examine one of the most important concepts of Cognitive Linguistics in more detail. The point of departure is Fillmore’s conception of “frames of understanding” – an approach to (cognitive) semantics that Fillmore developed from 1975 to 1985. The envisaged Understanding Semantics (“U-Semantics”) is a semantic theory sui generis whose significance for linguistic research cannot be overestimated. David, a fighter in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; escapes from the Ghetto after the fall of the Uprising. His family had perished in the death camp; but the fate of his brother Stefan, who joined the Jewish Police in the Ghetto; is unknown. David hides on the "Aryan" side with the help of his teacher and his high school friends. When the Gestapo raids his place, he escapes but is accosted by a man blackmailing Jews. David overpowers him and leaves him unconscious. He meets Morris, a Jew, who also lost his entire family. Morris goes to "Hotel Polski" and buys himself a South American visa, which would let him leave Poland and go to Switzerland. Morris is taken to the Bergen~ Belsen concentration camp and the "Hotel Polski" affair turns out to be a Gestapo trap; they all are eventually killed in Auschwitz. David's joins Polish underground army and prints illegal leaflets. He takes part in the sabotage action where he kills the railroad guard and rescues a teenage brother of his friend. He has to run away again when he is about to be reported by a janitor. When the Warsaw Uprising ignites; David and his friends fight the Nazis. David witnesses a Polish MP executing a Jew falsely accused of being a Nazi spy. David meets "Renia", an Uprising runner, his first love. He finds out about the murder of several Jews by the rogue company of the Polish underground forces. He swims across the Vistula River to inform the Polish General in the Russian Army about the tragic fate of the Uprising. "Renia" is killed in action and the Uprising capitulates. The fighters are taken to POW camps and civilians to a labor camps. David escapes from Warsaw and works in a Polish field hospital as an attendant. He has to escape again; being afraid he was recognized as a Jew. He joins the partisans and is wounded in action. When the Red Army liberates the area he returns to destroyed Warsaw and meets Rebecca, the love of his live. Rebecca had become deathly ill with "blood poisoning" and David travelled illegally to Berlin to buy Penicillin to save her. The action moves to Silesia, where David's brother, Stefan, under the false name of Jan Baranski joins the communist party and hated Secret Police. He tries to hide his shameful secret from the Warsaw Ghetto. He is paranoid, unable to sleep and ends up in a hospital with the overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol. David is helping the Jews wounded in the "pogrom" in Kielce, where more then 40 Jews were killed by the Polish mob. David's best friend (who had returned from the POW camp) gets arrested by the Secret Police and dies during the interrogation. Jan Baranski is called to the Secret Police headquarter in Warsaw and finds that his brother David is alive and about to be arrested. While brothers meet, Jan advises that David should escape from Poland through the Czech border but gets furious when David calls him a Jewish Policeman. He then calls the border police and orders David's arrest. David reconsiders his plans, suspecting his brother double •crossed him. He decides to escape through the western border to Berlin and eventually to Palestine.

This book provides an overview of lakes in Mongolia from scientific, economic and scenic points of view, presenting lake area changes, their sedimentological and geochemical characteristics, valuable economic and geoheritage resources and paleoclimate change reconstruction. The book emphasizes internationally well-known lakes of Mongolia, but it also describes far less popular lakes which have remained unrecognized for scientific importance. The book offers modern, qualitative, process-oriented approaches and quantitative analytic results-based implications to understand the geomorphological, sedimentological and geochemical evolution of lake basins in Mongolia, and past and present climate changes in Mongolia and Eurasia. Insights into the interpretation of data obtained from the lake basins in the fields of geomorphology, sedimentology, geochemistry, geochronology and paleoclimatology are developed from theoretical principles, empirical observations, correlative illustrations, analytic measurements and conscious hypotheses. Based on the application of a combined compilation of recent Landsat 8 images of the lakes and topographic maps of them in 1970, this book presents enriched results and implications derived from remote sensing together with field measurements and laboratory analyses. This data compilation belongs to a research team at the Laboratory of Geochemistry and Geomorphology (LGG), National University of Mongolia (NUM).

It was a greatest pleasure for me to learn that Springer-Verlag wished to produce a second edition of my book. In this connection, Dr. H. Lotsch asked me to send hirn a list of misprints, mistakes, and inaccuracies that had been noticed in the first edition and to make corresponding corrections without disturbing the layout or the typo graphy too much. I accepted this opportunity with alacrity and, moreover, found some free places in the text where I was able to insert some concise, up-to-date information about new lasing compounds and stimulated emission channels. It was also possible to increase the number of reference citations. The reader of the second edition hence has access to more complete data on insulating laser crystals. However, sections on laser-crystal physics have not been updated, because a satisfactory de scription of the progress made in the last ten years in this field would have required the sections to be extended enormously or even a new book to be written.
