But violence in Sin City is more than a superficial effect. It is a narrative and significant device. This term paper explores in detail the role and depiction of violence in Frank Miller's Sin City: That Yellow Bastard. (Note: This work is helpful for both, people who want to learn about the graphic novels as well as for those who are interested in Rodriguez' movies) Frank Miller’s critically acclaimed comic book series Sin City clearly pushes the borders of the sayable and displayable. The website for popculture complex.com features Sin City in its “The 40 Most Violent Comics Ever” article. According to the Parents Guide To Movies2, the film adaption of Sin City matches all criteria of mature content to an extraordinary extent: sex and nudity, violence and gore, profanity, alcohol and smoking as well as intense fighting scenes. And so does the comic itself. Nevertheless, Frank Miller was awarded several times with the Eisner Award - the most important American award for comic artists. This paper will deal with the 4th volume of the Sin City-series: That Yellow Bastard. I chose this volume, as I consider it representative of the whole series. In accordance, the Sin City film adaption, directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, featured many scenes of That Yellow Bastard volume. The graphic novel comes up with a unique noir, black-and-white style, roughness and an unadorned depiction of the characters’ dirty traits - his tendency towards violence.

Depending on their dynamics, neighbourhoods may serve to contain or exacerbate youth violence. This book uses fascinating ethnographic and interview data to explore the disappearance of localized relationships in a South London housing estate. Through a comparative analysis of the experiences of different generations, James Alexander considers the impact of both wider socio-economic developments and the gradual move from neighbourly to professional support for young people. As well as evaluating the effectiveness of youth work programmes, he considers how the actions of neighbours and the decisions of policymakers influence how supported young people feel and, consequently, their vulnerability to criminal influences.
Combining the tools of political, social, cultural, and intellectual history, Consumption and Violence: Radical Protest in Cold-War West Germany explores strategies of legitimization developed by advocates of militant resistance to certain manifestations of consumer capitalism. The book contributes to a more sober evaluation of West German protest movements, not just terrorism, as it refrains from emotional and moral judgments, but takes the protesters’ approaches seriously, which, regarding consumer society, had a rational core. Political violence is not presented as the result of individual shortcomings, but emerges in relation to major societal changes, i.e., the unprecedented growth of consumption. This new perspective sheds important light on violence and radical protest in post-war Germany, as previous books have failed to examine to what extent these forms of resistance should be regarded as reactions to changing regimes of provision. Continuing the recently growing interest in the interdependence of countercultures and consumer society, the focus on violence gives the argument a unique twist, making the book thought-provoking and engaging.
Exploring the conditions under which children, as a function of their own abuse, become abusive themselves. That experiences from childhood affect our behavior in adulthood, especially in the ways we treat our children and intimate partners, is generally accepted. Indeed, theories of intergenerational transmission of violence indicate that if we ourselves have been abused and neglected as children, we will likely be abusive and neglectful to others close to us—thus extending the cycle across generations. However, many individuals who were maltreated as children do not replicate this cycle, and such models make little sense of the individual raised in a “good family” who is violent either as a child or as an adult. These discontinuities of cycles of violence and trauma have challenged professionals and nonprofessionals alike. However, broadening our vision and attending to new areas of research can help to illuminate this conundrum and open up new avenues of intervention. In this book, Pamela Alexander does just that. She proposes that an increased risk for abusive behavior or revictimization, as a function of one’s own experiences of abuse or trauma in childhood, can best be understood through the complementary lenses of attachment theory (focusing on the relationship between the child and the caregiver) and family systems theory (focusing on the larger context of this relationship). That is, what a child acquires from her relationship with a caregiver is not simply a reflection of what she has “learned” from experiencing or witnessing abuse. Rather, it emerges from the child’s felt experience of the relationship itself—on implicit emotional, physical, and neurobiological levels. Alexander founds the book on this multifaceted parent–child attachment relationship and its place in the wider family system, integrating clinical experience with close attention to the long-term neurobiological and epigenetic effects of trauma. She focuses on common outcomes of a history of maltreatment, and of child sexual abuse in particular, including peer victimization, partner violence, parenting problems, and sexual offending. A detailed review of the literature accompanies instructive case examples. Sources of trauma from outside the family, including combat exposure, political terrorism, foster care, and incarceration of parents are considered. Finally, Alexander analyzes the multiple sources of natural resilience—the neurobiological, the individual, the relational, and the social—to enable professionals of all backgrounds to tailor-make effective interventions for interrupting cycles of trauma and violence.

And, what has been the price of power - both for Peter and for Russia?
This is a study of conflict resolution as a personal adaption to the conflict inherent in any particular situation. The model distinguishes three basic reactions to conflict -- confrontation, reconciliation, and avoidance - determined by personality variables. The theory is tested on samples of correctional and social service volunteer workers, because volunteers tend to select freely the roles that are harmonious or consistent with their personalities. The study found that these volunteers preferred low-conflict situations and tended to deal with problems by denying their existence, or by underestimating their potential for division and conflict. This cluster of behaviours is defined as the Conflict Resolution Syndrome. The dangers of institutionalizing the Syndrome, and of concentrating 'avoidance' personalities in decision-making roles, is described : the solutions offered tend to respond to the psychological needs of the decision-makers rather than to the objective conditions of the problem. Chapter 1 contains an overview of the book. Chapter 2 contains a critical review of the literature on the personality characteristics of volunteers. The research study is presented in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, a personality typology based on conflict avoidance is outlined. Chapter 5 gives social and political analyses of aspects of volunteerism, and Chapter 6 describes the social and political dangers inherent in conflict avoidance strategies.

Presidential Power, Rhetoric, and the Terror Wars: The Sovereign Presidency argues that the War on Terror provided an opportunity to fundamentally change the presidency. Alexander Hiland analyzes the documents used to exercise presidential powers, including executive orders, signing statements, and presidential policy directives. Treating these documents as genres of speech-act that are ideologically motivated, Hiland provides a rhetorical criticism that illuminates the values and political convictions at play in these documents. This book reveals how both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama wielded the personal power of the office to dramatically expand the power of the executive branch. During the War on Terror, the presidency shifted from an imperial form that avoided checks and balances, to a sovereign presidency where the executive branch had the ability to decide whether those checks and balances existed. International Relations theory assumes that the struggle for power is not only ahistorical but that international politics is necessarily the realm of a perpetual struggle for power between states. However, by looking beyond the state, the study of global politics may itself reveal the importance of alternative imaginaries just as historically salient as that of the state system. In particular, this book argues that a specific racial imaginary has, over the past two centuries, cut across politically defined state boundaries to legitimate practices of genocidal violence against so-called "enemy races." In Global Race War, Alexander D. Barder shows how the very idea of global order was based on racial hierarchy and difference. Barder traces the emergence of this global racial hierarchy from the early 19th century to the present to explain how a historical racial global order unraveled over the first half of the 20th century, continued during the Cold War, and reemerged during the Global War on Terror. As Barder shows, imperial, racial, and geopolitical orders intersected over time in ways that violently tore apart the imperial and sovereign state system and continue to haunt politics today. Examining global politics in terms of race and racial violence reveals a different spatial topology across domestic and global politics. Moreover, global histories of racial hierarchy and violence have important implications for understanding the continued salience of race within Western polities. Global Race War revisits two centuries of international history to show the important consequences of a global racial imaginary that continues to reverberate across time and space.
