Based on data from an experiment which ran for ten years, this book summarizes the results of the Atmospheric Physics Department of the St. Petersburg University and the Main Geophysical Observatory. The processed data now forms a rich dataset of spectral values of radiative characteristics under different atmospheric conditions. The analysis of this database clearly shows that the solar radiative absorption in a dusty and cloudy atmosphere is significantly higher than assumed to date. Both graduate students of atmospheric sciences as well as scientists and researchers in the field of meteorology and climatology will find a wealth of new data and information in this monograph.
Semi-empirical Neural Network Modeling presents a new approach on how to quickly construct an accurate, multilayered neural network solution of differential equations. Current neural network methods have significant disadvantages, including a lengthy learning process and single-layered neural networks built on the finite element method (FEM). The strength of the new method presented in this book is the automatic inclusion of task parameters in the final solution formula, which eliminates the need for repeated problem-solving. This is especially important for constructing individual models with unique features. The book illustrates key concepts through a large number of specific problems, both hypothetical models and practical interest. - Offers a new approach to neural networks using a unified simulation model at all stages of design and operation - Illustrates this new approach with numerous concrete examples throughout the book - Presents the methodology in separate and clearly-defined stages

Introduction to Radiation Acoustics is ideal for graduate students and specialists in the fields of accelerator techniques, acoustics, radiotherapeutics, and elementary particle physics.
This book questions the view of the current orthodoxy which argues that the Soviet Union and the United States were binary opposites in the 1930s. The Shaping of Popular Consent presents a comparative analysis of one specific facet of the USSR and the US, namely the manner in which their ruling elites sought to win popular consent. A key dimension in the analysis of any political order, this issue recommends itself precisely because the assumption that, in this the two were quite dissimilar, is the virtual point of departure for the current thinking. To sharpen the focus of the comparison, the book concentrates on the role of the visual arts and the manner and extent to which those in power employed them to attempt to win popular consent. Therefore, this book poses two questions. Firstly, to what extent did the ruling elites in both the USSR and the US believe they needed the people's faith/trust in the system? Secondly, different as the two societies were, to what extent might they have employed similar use of visual cultural media in their attempts to win "hearts and minds"? The study explores the interwar years, specifically 1929-1941. This was an era of great upheaval in both the USSR and the US and marks the beginning of the age of mass communication. The book examines if, how, and to what extent Soviet and American cultural producers, during the years 1929-1941, employed the visual arts, cinema in particular but also painting, the plastic arts, theatre and architecture, to promote, essentially, the establishments' rights and wrongs, heroes and villains. It does so exploring both the domestic and the international scene. It illustrates that, despite giant differences between the two countries, in the way the two establishments sought to win popular consent the binary view is simply inaccurate. Perhaps more importantly, it demonstrates the need for a plethora of wide-ranging comparative studies of the Soviet Union and the United States. Indeed, through recognizing the importance of comparing and contrasting the USSR and the US, and by attempting to do just that, we might learn to better understand how, in what ways and for what purposes these two countries, so central to our understanding of the modern world, were organized. Thus, this work is genuinely comparative, inter-disciplinary and cultural. Indeed, the study is part of a vanguard movement. It is of significant value to scholars of both the USSR, Stalinism and Soviet art and the US, the New Deal and Hollywood. Finally, building on work by Noam Chomsky, Anotonio Gramsci and others such as Benedict Anderson's book Imagined Communities, the book will be of tremendous interests to many (both students and interested parties alike) who have an interest in how identities are constructed, how propaganda is manufactured and just how the (ostensibly) divergent philosophies of modern governments are represented in popular culture.
The book is devoted to an important aspect of pharmacology and pharmaceutical chemistry, i.e. the significance of stereoisomerism of drugs for their biological effect from the point of view of their pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and toxicology. The authors review the landmarks in the development of stereochemistry and stereopharmacology. Present-day IUPAC terminology is discussed; general issues of stereoisomerism are considered including separation of racemic mixtures and asymmetric synthesis of isomers, methods of quantifying the isomers of a drug in biological material. The authors put special emphasis on general problems of the influence of stereoisomerism on pharmacological and adverse effects of drugs. A classification of drugs based on stereochemical properties of their isomers is proposed. Possibilities of interaction of stereoisomers in racemic mixtures are discussed. A considerable portion of the book is devoted to pharmacological action of the main groups of drugs whose structure includes asymmetric atoms (that is, drugs with several isomers). Detailed attention is paid to advisability of developing single isomer drugs and to the specifics of their study at the stage of preclinical and clinical trials.
The book is devoted to the study of approximate solutions of optimization problems in the presence of computational errors. It contains a number of results on the convergence behavior of algorithms in a Hilbert space, which are known as important tools for solving optimization problems. The research presented in the book is the continuation and the further development of the author's (c) 2016 book Numerical Optimization with Computational Errors, Springer 2016. Both books study the algorithms taking into account computational errors which are always present in practice. The main goal is, for a known computational error, to find out what an approximate solution can be obtained and how many iterates one needs for this. The main difference between this new book and the 2016 book is that in this present book the discussion takes into consideration the fact that for every algorithm, its iteration consists of several steps and that computational errors for different steps are generally, different. This fact, which was not taken into account in the previous book, is indeed important in practice. For example, the subgradient projection algorithm consists of two steps. The first step is a calculation of a subgradient of the objective function while in the second one we calculate a projection on the feasible set. In each of these two steps there is a computational error and these two computational errors are different in general. It may happen that the feasible set is simple and the objective function is complicated. As a result, the computational error, made when one calculates the projection, is essentially smaller than the computational error of the calculation of the subgradient. Clearly, an opposite case is possible too. Another feature of this book is a study of a number of important algorithms which appeared recently in the literature and which are not discussed in the previous book. This monograph contains 12 chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction. In Chapter 2 we study the subgradient projection algorithm for minimization of convex and nonsmooth functions. We generalize the results of [NOCE] and establish results which has no prototype in [NOCE]. In Chapter 3 we analyze the mirror descent algorithm for minimization of convex and nonsmooth functions, under the presence of computational errors. For this algorithm each iteration consists of two steps. The first step is a calculation of a subgradient of the objective function while in the second one we solve an auxiliary minimization problem on the set of feasible points. In each of these two steps there is a computational error. We generalize the results of [NOCE] and establish results which has no prototype in [NOCE]. In Chapter 4 we analyze the projected gradient algorithm with a smooth objective function under the presence of computational errors. In Chapter 5 we consider an algorithm, which is an extension of the projection gradient algorithm used for solving linear inverse problems arising in signal/image processing. In Chapter 6 we study continuous subgradient method and continuous subgradient projection algorithm for minimization of convex nonsmooth functions and for computing the saddle points of convex-concave functions, under the presence of computational errors. All the results of this chapter has no prototype in [NOCE]. In Chapters 7-12 we analyze several algorithms under the presence of computational errors which were not considered in [NOCE]. Again, each step of an iteration has a computational errors and we take into account that these errors are, in general, different. An optimization problems with a composite objective function is studied in Chapter 7. A zero-sum game with two-players is considered in Chapter 8. A predicted decrease approximation-based method is used in Chapter 9 for constrained convex optimization. Chapter 10 is devoted to minimization of quasiconvex functions. Minimization of sharp weakly convex functions is discussed in Chapter 11. Chapter 12 is devoted to a generalized projected subgradient method for minimization of a convex function over a set which is not necessarily convex. The book is of interest for researchers and engineers working in optimization. It also can be useful in preparation courses for graduate students. The main feature of the book which appeals specifically to this audience is the study of the influence of computational errors for several important optimization algorithms. The book is of interest for experts in applications of optimization to engineering and economics.

Clouds affect the climate of the Earth, and they are an important factor in the weather. Therefore, their radiative properties must be understood in great detail. This book summarizes current knowledge on cloud optical properties, for example their ability to absorb, transmit, and reflect light, which depends on the clouds’ geometrical and microphysical characteristics such as sizes of droplets and crystals, their shapes, and structures. In addition, problems related to the image transfer through clouds and cloud remote sensing are addressed in this book in great detail. This book can be an important source of information on theoretical cloud optics for cloud physicists, meteorologists and optical engineers. All basic ideas of optics as related to scattering of light in clouds (e.g. Mie theory and radiative transfer) are considered in a self consistent way. Consequently, the book can also be a useful textbook to newcomers to the field.
This proceedings volume is devoted to a wide variety of items, both in theory and experiment, of particle physics such as tests of the Standard Model and beyond, physics at the future accelerators, neutrino and astroparticle physics, heavy quark physics, non-perturbative QCD, quantum gravity effects and cosmology. It is important that the papers in this volume reveal the present status and new developments in the above-mentioned items on the eve of a new era that starts with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The Political Culture of Russian Democrats examines the origins and development of the world view of those who call themselves 'democrats' in Russian in the last years of the USSR. The book develops a distinct approach to the study of political culture and applies it to a specific social group–members of the democratic movement in Soviet Russia. The author examines the emergence of the ideas of Russian 'democrats' during the Gorbachev era in Soviet politics, and traces the development of those beliefs in the post-Soviet era. The book argues that the liberal and democratic terminology of western politics were assimilated by Russian political culture, with the terms acquiring a different meaning.
This book demonstrates that the method, based on the ground polar cap magnetic observations is a reliable diagnosis of the solar wind energy coming into the magnetosphere Method for the uninterruptive monitoring of the magnetosphere state (i.e. space weather). It shows that the solar wind energy pumping power, can be described by the PC growth rate, thus, the magnetospheric substorms features are predetermined by the PC dynamics. Furthermore, it goes on to show that the beginning and ending of magnetic storms is predictable. The magnetic storm start only if the solar energy input into the magnetosphere exceeds a certain level and stops when the energy input turns out to be below this level.
This collection of Pushkin's stories begins with 'The Queen of Spades', perhaps the most celebrated short story in Russian literature. The young Hermann, while watching some friends gambling, hears a rumour of how an officer's grandmother is always able to predict the three winning cards in a game. He becomes obsessed with the woman and her seemingly mystical powers, and seeks to extract the secret from her at any cost. This volume, part of a new series of the complete works of Pushkin in English, also includes 'Dubrovsky', the story of a man's desire to avenge himself after his land is unjustly taken from him by an aristocrat; 'The Negro of Peter the Great', a tale inspired by Pushkin's maternal grandfather; and the unfinished story 'Egyptian Nights', a meditation on poetry and the poet. Together, they represent some of the most striking and enduring pieces of Pushkin's prose fiction.
This monograph provides theoretical and practical perspectives on competency management as a key resource for producing competitive products. The authors develop and substantiate a law of dependence between competencies and emergence of new markets, and describe the practical aspects of developing competencies in high-tech companies. Further, they develop economic and mathematical models for managing the competitive advantages of a company based on competencies. Using these models, they present a method for evaluating and ranking core competencies, as well as for multi-criteria ratings of human potential efficiency. The book also discusses the mechanisms of competitiveness management based on a conceptual model of a competence center network.
Rheology: Concepts, Methods and Applications, Third Edition provides a thorough historical and theoretical grounding in the field, and introduces rheology as the method of solving many practical problems in materials science and engineering. The book is practical and relevant for industry, but is also consistent with rheology courses in academia, making it relevant to both academics and accomplished rheologists in industry. The first four chapters discuss various aspects of theoretical rheology and, through examples from numerous studies, show how particular theories, models, or equations can be used in solving different problems. The shared experience and insight contained in these chapters assists practitioners carrying out rheological studies in generating relevant data. This helps to avert costly errors in analysis which are common when data are generated under the wrong conditions, or are incorrectly used. The fifth chapter covers methods of measurement and treatment of raw data—eight groups of methods are discussed in this chapter, providing the reader with many options for experimentation, along with guidance on where and how to use them properly. The final chapter demonstrates how to use rheological methods for different groups of products and manufacturing methods. The usefulness of chemorheological (rheokinetical) measurements is also emphasized. The chapter has a particular emphasis on real-world applications of rheology, and gives practical guidance to enable materials scientists to gather data and solve problems using these methods. This book is a systematic presentation of the subject of rheology—written by two of the foremost researchers in the field—showing the subject as an interrelated system of concepts, principal phenomena, experimental methods, and directions of their application. It also links with other branches of theoretical and applied sciences. - Provides substantial experience and insight to assist rheologists working in a range of industries to generate relevant data, avoiding costly errors in analysis - Includes eight groups of measurement methods, providing the reader with options so they can choose the most effective for their situation - Offers thorough coverage of different applications of rheology, demonstrating how to use rheological methods for different products—from polymeric materials to food products, biological fluids, and electro and magnetic materials

Armin G Stromberg was arguably one of the founding fathers of the technique of stripping voltammetry frequently used in chemical analysis, yet he is virtually unheard of in Western scientific circles. He was a brilliant scientist, but due to his German ancestry he was interred in one of the NKVD GULAG camps at the outbreak of the Second World War.This semi-biographical history presents the complete set of 74 surviving letters written by Stromberg to his wife during this period. The letters provide both historians and the interested public with a rare and unique glimpse into the everyday living conditions of inmates in one of the GULAG labour camps. The book also traces Stromberg's life following his release. More importantly, it relates how he founded the thriving Tomsk school to the wider historical context of electroanalysis in the USSR, drawing conclusions about the rate of scientific development as compared to the West and showing how ‘wet analysis’ remained of vital importance to industry long after equivalent measurements were made elsewhere.Readers will also appreciate how Stromberg's invaluable contributions in the Tomsk School of Electroanalysis laid the foundations for the extensive metallurgical extraction and nuclear industries that dominated the entire Siberian region for many years. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the life and times of an important, yet often overlooked scientist of the Second World War.
This focused monograph presents a study of subgradient algorithms for constrained minimization problems in a Hilbert space. The book is of interest for experts in applications of optimization to engineering and economics. The goal is to obtain a good approximate solution of the problem in the presence of computational errors. The discussion takes into consideration the fact that for every algorithm its iteration consists of several steps and that computational errors for different steps are different, in general. The book is especially useful for the reader because it contains solutions to a number of difficult and interesting problems in the numerical optimization. The subgradient projection algorithm is one of the most important tools in optimization theory and its applications. An optimization problem is described by an objective function and a set of feasible points. For this algorithm each iteration consists of two steps. The first step requires a calculation of a subgradient of the objective function; the second requires a calculation of a projection on the feasible set. The computational errors in each of these two steps are different. This book shows that the algorithm discussed, generates a good approximate solution, if all the computational errors are bounded from above by a small positive constant. Moreover, if computational errors for the two steps of the algorithm are known, one discovers an approximate solution and how many iterations one needs for this. In addition to their mathematical interest, the generalizations considered in this book have a significant practical meaning.

“Stark . . . the story of how one falsely accused convict and his fellow prisoners survived or perished in an arctic slave labor camp after the war.”—Time From the icy blast of reveille through the sweet release of sleep, Ivan Denisovich endures. A common carpenter, he is one of millions viciously imprisoned for countless years on baseless charges, sentenced to the waking nightmare of the Soviet work camps in Siberia. Even in the face of degrading hatred, where life is reduced to a bowl of gruel and a rare cigarette, hope and dignity prevail. This powerful novel of fact is a scathing indictment of Communist tyranny, and an eloquent affirmation of the human spirit. The prodigious works of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, including his acclaimed The Gulag Archipelago, have secured his place in the great tradition of Russian literary giants. Ironically, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is the only one of his works permitted publication in his native land. Praise for One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich “Cannot fail to arouse bitterness and pain in the heart of the reader. A literary and political event of the first magnitude.”—New Statesman “Both as a political tract and as a literary work, it is in the Doctor Zhivago category.”—Washington Post “Dramatic . . . outspoken . . . graphically detailed . . . a moving human record.”—Library Journal
Water. Except for air, it is the most important ingredient to all life on Earth. It surrounds us every day. We are literally bathed in it, we cook our food with it, and we need a steady stream of it in our bodies every single day just to survive. But water, and the study of it, is one of the most important and unheralded branches of engineering, affecting every other aspect of engineering in almost every industry. We harness its power for energy, we inject massive blasts of it into the earth to extract oil, gas, and minerals, and we use it in nearly every single industrial application, including food processing, refining, manufacturing, and waste disposal, just to name a few. Hyraulic modeling is, essentially, the understanding and prediction of fluid flow and its applications in industrial, municipal, and environmental settings, whether in a creekbed, locked in the pores of rocks deep in the earth, or in the ocean. Mathematical models, which started out with mechanical pencils and drafting tables originally, have been increasingly relied upon over the last few decades, due to the invention, growth, and refinement of computers. Physical modeling, however, is still practiced in laboratories, and it is the intersection of physical and mathematical modeling of fluid flow that is most successful in creating models that are safer, less costly, and are better for the environment. Hydraulic Modeling introduces and explores this incredibly important science, from the most basic tenets to valuable real-world applications that are used in industry today. It is the only volume on the market to offer a thorough coverage of the subject without adding lots of useless fluff or inapplicable appendices. It is a must-have for any engineer, scientist, or student working with hydraulic modeling, as a daily reference or a textbook.
The book is devoted to the study of constrained minimization problems on closed and convex sets in Banach spaces with a Frechet differentiable objective function. Such problems are well studied in a finite-dimensional space and in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. When the space is Hilbert there are many algorithms for solving optimization problems including the gradient projection algorithm which is one of the most important tools in the optimization theory, nonlinear analysis and their applications. An optimization problem is described by an objective function and a set of feasible points. For the gradient projection algorithm each iteration consists of two steps. The first step is a calculation of a gradient of the objective function while in the second one we calculate a projection on the feasible set. In each of these two steps there is a computational error. In our recent research we show that the gradient projection algorithm generates a good approximate solution, if all the computational errors are bounded from above by a small positive constant. It should be mentioned that the properties of a Hilbert space play an important role. When we consider an optimization problem in a general Banach space the situation becomes more difficult and less understood. On the other hand such problems arise in the approximation theory. The book is of interest for mathematicians working in optimization. It also can be useful in preparation courses for graduate students. The main feature of the book which appeals specifically to this audience is the study of algorithms for convex and nonconvex minimization problems in a general Banach space. The book is of interest for experts in applications of optimization to the approximation theory. In this book the goal is to obtain a good approximate solution of the constrained optimization problem in a general Banach space under the presence of computational errors. It is shown that the algorithm generates a good approximate solution, if the sequence of computational errors is bounded from above by a small constant. The book consists of four chapters. In the first we discuss several algorithms which are studied in the book and prove a convergence result for an unconstrained problem which is a prototype of our results for the constrained problem. In Chapter 2 we analyze convex optimization problems. Nonconvex optimization problems are studied in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4 we study continuous algorithms for minimization problems under the presence of computational errors. This book studies the approximate solutions of optimization problems in the presence of computational errors. A number of results are presented on the convergence behavior of algorithms in a Hilbert space; these algorithms are examined taking into account computational errors. The author illustrates that algorithms generate a good approximate solution, if computational errors are bounded from above by a small positive constant. Known computational errors are examined with the aim of determining an approximate solution. Researchers and students interested in the optimization theory and its applications will find this book instructive and informative. This monograph contains 16 chapters; including a chapters devoted to the subgradient projection algorithm, the mirror descent algorithm, gradient projection algorithm, the Weiszfelds method, constrained convex minimization problems, the convergence of a proximal point method in a Hilbert space, the continuous subgradient method, penalty methods and Newton’s method.
This book is devoted to a detailed study of the subgradient projection method and its variants for convex optimization problems over the solution sets of common fixed point problems and convex feasibility problems. These optimization problems are investigated to determine good solutions obtained by different versions of the subgradient projection algorithm in the presence of sufficiently small computational errors. The use of selected algorithms is highlighted including the Cimmino type subgradient, the iterative subgradient, and the dynamic string-averaging subgradient. All results presented are new. Optimization problems where the underlying constraints are the solution sets of other problems, frequently occur in applied mathematics. The reader should not miss the section in Chapter 1 which considers some examples arising in the real world applications. The problems discussed have an important impact in optimization theory as well. The book will be useful for researches interested in the optimization theory and its applications.
“This important new book . . . based on archival material . . . shows the huge extent of Soviet espionage activity in the United States during the 20th century” (The Telegraph). Based on KGB archives that have never been previously released, this stunning book provides the most complete account of Soviet espionage in America ever written. In 1993, former KGB officer Alexander Vassiliev was permitted unique access to Stalin-era records of Soviet intelligence operations against the United States. Years later, Vassiliev retrieved his extensive notebooks of transcribed documents from Moscow. With these notebooks, John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr have meticulously constructed a new and shocking historical account. Along with valuable insight into Soviet espionage tactics and the motives of Americans who spied for Stalin, Spies resolves many long-standing intelligence controversies. The book confirms that Alger Hiss cooperated with the Soviets over a period of years, that journalist I. F. Stone worked on behalf of the KGB in the 1930s, and that Robert Oppenheimer was never recruited by Soviet intelligence. Uncovering numerous American spies who never came under suspicion, this essential volume also reveals the identities of the last unidentified American nuclear spies. And in a gripping introduction, Vassiliev tells the story of his notebooks and his own extraordinary life.
