The rekindling of the European Union enlargement talks and Brexit require a reappraisal of the law of the EU's proximity policies. In that light, this book turns Wider Europe into an analytical concept to capture the legal and political facets of the extension of the EU's legal space in the Union's neighbourhood. The book follows three lines of inquiry. Firstly, it reflects on the similarities and differences between internal and external integration, drawing a distinction between EU membership law and EU neighbourhood law. Secondly, it unravels the techniques for the extension of the EU's legal space across different partnerships in the Union's neighbourhood. Thirdly, it sheds light on the political covenants underlying the variety of institutional arrangements of the extended EU's legal space. The book discusses how EU neighbourhood law entails a reconfiguration of how sovereignty is exercised both in the EU and in third countries participating in the Wider Europe.

Prenant en compte les recherches accomplies au cours des dernières décennies dans le domaine des études diplomatiques, ce travail corrige plusieurs erreurs et inexactitudes contenues dans les précédentes éditions de ces sources et contient quelques documents inédits. Une introduction aborde le cadre historique des relations diplomatiques et examine les caractéristiques des sources. Un riche ensemble de notes explicatives et un glossaire analysent leur contenu. Les sources publiées dans ce volume constituent le témoignage historique disponible pour tracer le cadre des échanges diplomatiques entretenus par la Ville du Lys et Le Caire mamelouk. This book offers the edition, translation into French and analysis of all the chancery documents (in Arabic, Latin and Italian) concerning the relations established between Florence and the Mamluk sultanate between 1422 and 1510. Taking into consideration the achievements made in recent decades in the field of Mamluk diplomatics, this work corrects several errors and inaccuracies contained in previous editions as well as presents some unpublished documents. An introduction addresses the historical framework of diplomatic relations and examines the characteristics of the sources. A rich body of explanatory notes and a glossary analyze their content. The sources published in this volume constitute the historical testimony available for outlining the framework of the diplomatic exchanges maintained by the City of the Lily and Mamluk Cairo.

For centuries, social life in rural Tuscany has centered around the veglia, an evening gathering of family and friends at the hearth. Folklore by the Fireside is a thorough and insightful study of this custom—from the tales, riddles, lullabies, and folk prayers performed as the small children are put to bed to the courtship songs and dances later in the evening to the anti-veglia male gossip, card games, and protest songs originating in the tavern. Alessandro Falassi skillfully correlates the veglia to the rites of passage and family values of an agrarian society. Although the impact of mass media and other factors has tended to weaken the tradition, even today Tuscan children are taught to behave and adolescents are guided along the conventional path to adulthood, courtship, and marriage through veglia folklore.
