Polinka Saks and the Story of Aleksei

This volume offers two of Druzhinin's essential works in their first English translations. Polinka Saks, his most essential short novel, is an epistolary tale of a romantic triangle involving an older man, his young wife, and a dashing young prince. The husband attempts to introduce his wife to literature, art, and music, but his efforts run counter to the dominant trend of society, which "forces women to become little children." The wife falls victim to the prince and realizes too late the value of the education provided by her husband. A far different tale, The Story of Aleksei Dmitrich is a complex social and psychological study of poverty, family disharmony, precocious children, and destructive self-sacrifice.

In 1945, Aleksandr Nekrich returned from the front. He spent the next three decades at the centre of the Soviet historical profession. He maintained friendships with such noted public figures such as Ivan Maisky, Soviet ambassador to Britain, and Abram Deborin, whom Stalin branded a ‘Menshevik-idealist.’ He also encountered writers, artists, scientists, and even spies. Among Soviet historians, Nekrich was the only one who dared to break the taboo and declare that the Stalin-Hitler pact was advantageous to Nazi Germany. This monograph examines multidimensional stability of strong discontinuities (e.g. shock waves) for systems of conservation laws and surveys the author's results for models of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (classical, 'pressure anisotropic', relativistic) and electrohydrodynamics. The primary attention is concentrated on linearised stability analysis, especially on the issue of uniform stability in the sense of the uniform Kreiss-Lopatinski condition. A so-called 'equational' approach based on obtaining, by the dissipative integrals technique, a priori estimates without loss of smoothness for corresponding linearised stability problems in the domains of uniform stability is described. Recent results for ideal models of MHD (classical MHD, 'pressure anisotropic' MHD of Chew, Goldberger and Low, relativistic MHD) and also for a certain non-hyperbolic model are presented as the system of electrohydrodynamics (EHD).
