Modernismo (1880s-1920s) is considered one of the most groundbreaking literary movements in Hispanic history, as it transformed literature in Spanish to an extent not seen since the Renaissance. As Alejandro Mejias-Lopez demonstrates, however, modernismo was also groundbreaking in another, more radical way: it was the first time a postcolonial literature took over the literary field of the former European metropolis. Expanding Bourdieu's concepts of cultural field and symbolic capital beyond national boundaries, The Inverted Conquest shows how modernismo originated in Latin America and traveled to Spain, where it provoked a complete renovation of Spanish letters and contributed to a national identity crisis. In the process, described by Latin American writers as a reversal of colonial relations, modernismo wrested literary and cultural authority away from Spain, moving the cultural center of the Hispanic world to the Americas. Mejias-Lopez further reveals how Spanish American modernistas confronted the racial supremacist claims and homogenizing force of an Anglo-American modernity that defined the Hispanic as un-modern. Constructing a new Hispanic genealogy, modernistas wrote Spain as the birthplace of modernity and themselves as the true bearers of the modern spirit, moved by the pursuit of knowledge, cosmopolitanism, and cultural miscegenation, rather than technology, consumption, and scientific theories of racial purity. Bound by the intrinsic limits of neocolonial and postcolonial theories, scholarship has been unwilling or unable to explore modernismo's profound implications for our understanding of Western modernities.
-Capítulo I: El encuentro de Flavio y Mariana. -Capítulo II: El niño santo Toujours Ponctuel. -Capítulo III: El nacimiento de Nimrodina. -Capítulo IV: El gran líder mundial. -Capítulo V: Yo soy Nimrodis Filisteus Primerus. -Capítulo VI: La Bestia y el Falso Profeta. -Acerca del autor. The Ecologies of the Envelope theorizes the building envelope as a literal embodiment of the social, political, technological, and economic contingencies which have become embedded within it over the last century, analyzing the historical lineages, heroes and villains that helped define the complex material ecologies we see within the envelope today. While the façade is one of the most thoroughly theorized elements of architecture, it is also one of the most questioned since the end of the 19th century. Within the discipline of architecture, the traditional understanding of the façade focuses primarily on semiotic and compositional operations (such as proportional laws and linguistic codes), which are deployed on the building's surface. In contrast to this, our material and environmental theory of the envelope proposes that the exponential development of building technologies since the mid-19th century, coupled with new techniques of management and regulation, have diminished the compositional and ornamental capacities of the envelope in favor of material, quantitative, and technical performances. Rather than producing a stylistic analysis of the façade, we investigate the historical lineages of the performances, components, assembly types, and material entanglements that constitute the contemporary building envelope.
While there are volumes that fall into the category of children’s literature, there appears to be relatively few that explore the needs of bilingual learners and the linguistic and sociocultural context of Latino children’s literature. This volume makes a needed contribution by addressing the social, cultural, academic, and linguistic needs of Latino bilingual learners who are still underserved through current school practices. We aim to conceptualize different forms of social knowledge so that they can serve as cultural resources for learning, acquiring knowledge, and transforming self and identity. This volume presents a balance of theory, research, and practice that speak to authentic multicultural Latino literature and helps ensure its availability for all students. The intended outcome of this volume then is to create a heightened awareness of the cultural and linguistic capital held by the Latino community, to increase Latino students’ social capital through the design of critical pedagogical practices, and for the formulation of a new perspective, that of Latino multicultural literature for children.
How do identities shape and react to the socio-economic landscape? I draw from paradigms in cultural anthropology, organizational behavior, and sociology to dissect how distinct elements of individual identity inform and transform social interactions within corporate, work-life, and social class structures. In my first study, I provide evidence for the role of similarity and dissimilarity in visual (e.g., age, gender) and psychological (i.e., personality) attributes among CEOs on strategic imitation following underperformance. In the second project, I examine how romantic couples' joint preferences for integration or segmentation of their work and home spheres influence their domestic harmony, zooming into the context of remote work. In the final project, I explore how social class disparities among conversation partners influence the amount and type of information about the self, conveyed during the interaction. I address my projects by combining analytical strategies designed for the study of similarities and differences - e.g., spline regression and response surface analysis - with techniques aimed to capture the complexity of individual identity - e.g., surveys, archival data, and natural language processing. My research bridges theoretical and methodological paradigms in the social sciences, underscoring the multiplicity of the self as a critical nexus for interdisciplinary dialogue.
This is a book that impresses with its scatological details and origin of the main characters in the novel, and announces the next ominous truth, blind to our entertained top noodles in numbness. Here a world leader has arised during the End Times as we read details of his personal life such as where he was born, who his parents and ancestry came from, raising stories which occurred during his childhood and youth; as well the sabotage against human dignity by revealing the works associated with this arbitrary skillful manipulator of insidious means called as the Antichrist in the Holy Scriptures. In this book the reader will find a human Beast that longs to become an instrument of life and ended his days praising death, injustice; and the establishment of a universal and obscure principality. For a group of insane madmen, money and wealth is not enough, but is needed an epileptiform glory, at the cost of their whims. The great peacemaker from hell Nimrodis Filisteus Primerus is not alone, because he has a partnership with a religious leader who joins such race in universal campaign using his demagoguery and schizophrenic tattletales. He meets Nimrodis at the coronation of Pope Benedictine Postremo I; and from some relevant evening to the night time of history, he becomes known as the False Prophet from the Book of Revelation. Immerse yourself on an interstellar journey through "A Story of More than 5000 Worlds'' as it explores the fascinating story of celestial discovery and the enduring quest of researchers and scientists to find life beyond Earth. This comprehensive book navigates the intricacies of star and planet formation, shedding light on the enigmatic life cycle of stars like our Sun to pulsars and black holes and the dynamic processes that define the fate of planets. Marvel at the ingenuity of exoplanet detection methods, from the accurate detection of stellar wobbles to the precise monitoring of starlight dimming during transits, and peer into the future with innovative techniques that take advantage of the deformation or curvature of the space-time caused by massive objects. The classification of these distant worlds from rocky planets to gas giants lays the groundwork for the book's climax: the search for life. Exploring biosignatures and technosignatures, from the organic and chemical traces of potential life, to the echoes of advanced technological civilizations, this book expands our understanding of the dynamicity of the universe and our place within it. It's an invitation to ponder humanity's greatest question – are we alone? – while navigating through the Drake Equation and other Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) concepts, and the silence that has prompted ideas like the Fermi Paradox, and the Great Filter. The book, in addition to acting as an engaging read for anyone interested in these subjects and given the number of topics included and the breadth of the discussions, could also be used as a complementary textbook for students at both high school and non-science bachelor levels, in introductory or fundamental astronomy courses.
This monograph presents some theoretical and computational aspects of the parameterization method for invariant manifolds, focusing on the following contexts: invariant manifolds associated with fixed points, invariant tori in quasi-periodically forced systems, invariant tori in Hamiltonian systems and normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. This book provides algorithms of computation and some practical details of their implementation. The methodology is illustrated with 12 detailed examples, many of them well known in the literature of numerical computation in dynamical systems. A public version of the software used for some of the examples is available online. The book is aimed at mathematicians, scientists and engineers interested in the theory and applications of computational dynamical systems.
Contemporary Colonialities in Mexico and Beyond explores the changing dynamic of coloniality by focusing on how modern cultural products connect to the foundational structures of colonialism. The book examines how these structures have perpetuated discourses of racial, ethnic, gender, and social exclusion rooted in Mexico’s history. Given the intimate relationship between coloniality and modernity, the volume addresses three central questions: How does the Mexican colonial history influence the definition of Mexico from within and outside its borders? What issues rooted in coloniality recur over time and space? And finally, how do cultural products provide a concrete and tangible way of studying coloniality, its history, and its evolution? The book analyses how literary works, movies, television series, and social media posts reconfigure colonial difference and spatialization. Supported by careful historical and cultural contextualization, these analyses will allow readers to appreciate contemporary Mexico vis-à-vis culture and borderland issues in the United States and debates on imperial memory in Spain. Ultimately, Contemporary Colonialities in Mexico and Beyond presents a handbook for readers looking to learn more about coloniality as a pervasive part of global interactions today.
Based on the principles of functional vascular anatomy and endovascular treatment described in the first three volumes of Surgical Neuroangiography, Volumes 4 and 5 complete the series that takes a revolutionary approach in endovascular neurosurgery. The authors are world leaders, recipients of numerous prizes in medicine, and can offer the unique fruit of their combined anatomical, clinical and therapeutic experience to investigate and understand the disease process, its anatomical features and its relationship to patients' symptoms and treatment planning. Volume 4 is geared to track the vascular abnormalities of the brain; Volume 5 the vascular abnormalities of the spine and spinal cord. Both volumes identify the specifics of vascular lesions and set the interventional neuroradiological techniques before a background of proper clinical analysis and expertise. Each volume emphasizes the strategy and management objectives from an endovascular perspective taking into consideration a multidisciplinary approach where neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists examine the clinical presentation, the diagnostic study and the therapeutic options in a joint decision-making process.
Part of the "What Do I Do Now?" series, Neurocritical Care provides insight into interventions in acute neurologic disorders. Using a case-based approach, this volume emphasizes how to handle comparatively common clinical problems emergently.
Filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s insights into the Tarot as a spiritual path • Works with the original Marseille Tarot to reveal the roots of Western wisdom • Provides the key to the symbolic language of the Tarot’s “nomadic cathedral” • Transforms a simple divination tool into a vehicle for self-realization and healing Alejandro Jodorowsky’s profound study of the Tarot, which began in the early 1950s, reveals it to be far more than a simple divination device. The Tarot is first and foremost a powerful instrument of self-knowledge and a representation of the structure of the soul. The Way of Tarot shows that the entire deck is structured like a temple, or a mandala, which is both an image of the world and a representation of the divine. The authors use the sacred art of the original Marseille Tarot--created during a time of religious tolerance in the 11th century--to reconnect with the roots of the Tarot’s Western esoteric wisdom. They explain that the Tarot is a “nomadic cathedral” whose parts--the 78 cards or “arcana”--should always be viewed with an awareness of the whole structure. This understanding is essential to fully grasp the Tarot’s hermetic symbolism. The authors explore the secret associations behind the hierarchy of the cards and the correspondences between the suits and energies within human beings. Each description of the Major Arcana includes key word summaries, symbolic meanings, traditional interpretations, and a section where the card speaks for itself. Jodorowsky and Costa then take the art of reading the Tarot to a depth never before possible. Using their work with Tarology, a new psychological approach that uses the symbolism and optical language of the Tarot to create a mirror image of the personality, they offer a powerful tool for self-realization, creativity, and healing.
The scale of ecological crises made us realize that every kind of politics has always been cosmopolitics, politics of a cosmos. Cosmos embraces everything, including the multifarious natural and material entities that make humans act. The book examines cosmopolitics in its relation to design practice. Abandoning the modernist idea of nature as being external to the human experience - a nature that can be mastered by engineers and scientists from outside, the cosmpolitical thinking offers designers to embark in an active process of manipulating and reworking nature ’from within.’ To engage in cosmopolitics, this book argues, means to redesign, create, instigate, and compose every single feature of our common experience. In the light of this new understanding of nature, we set the questions: What is the role of design if nature is no longer salient enough to provide a background for human activities? How can we foster designers’ own force and make present what causes designers to think, feel, and act? How do designers make explicit the connection of humans to a variety of entities with different ontology: rivers, species, particles, materials and forces? How do they redefine political order by bringing together stars, prions and people? In effect, how should we understand design practice in its relation to the material and the living world? In this volume, anthropologists, science studies scholars, political scientists and sociologists rethink together the meaning of cosmopolitics for design. At the same time designers, architects and artists engage with the cosmopolitical question in trying to imagine the future of architectural and urban design. The book contains original empirical chapters and a number of revealing interviews with artists and designers whose practices set examples of ’cosmopolitically correct design’.

In the mid-1950s, in an effort to modernize Venezuela, the military government razed dozens of slums in the heart of the capital Caracas, replacing them with massive buildings to house the city's working poor. The project remained unfinished when the dictatorship fell on January 23, 1958, and in a matter of days city residents illegally occupied thousands of apartments, squatted on green spaces, and renamed the neighborhood to honor the emerging democracy: the 23 de Enero (January 23). Over the next thirty years, through eviction efforts, guerrilla conflict, state violence, internal strife, and official neglect, inhabitants of the barrio learned to use their strategic location and symbolic tie to the promise of democracy in order to demand a better life. Granting legitimacy to the state through the vote but protesting its failings with violent street actions when necessary, they laid the foundation for an expansive understanding of democracy--both radical and electoral--whose features still resonate today"--Provided by publisher.

––dijo Aramis. ––Eso iba yo a preguntaros,––interrumpió D'Artagnan. ––¿Acaso nos constituimos presos todos? ––exclamó Aramis es...
