For the first time, both parts of Transition are under one cover! "Transition: Part One - A Comics Artist is Formed" is the true story of how I grew up with comics, abandoned them, and then returned to them and decided to start self-publishing! "Transition: Part Two - The Best of All Possible Worlds" describes the secret origins of my minicomic PHASE 7, as well as many of the things I learned in my first 4 years of self-publishing. This book secretly contains many useful tips on how to start your own comic book, distribute it and get involved in the comics community!

The two issues of Phase 7 in this collection act as a companion volume to Alec Longstreth's graphic novel Basewood. Issue #020 includes all of the lyrics from Songs From the Basewood, a rock opera reinterpretation of Basewood by Andy Hentz and Alec Longstreth, as well as "The Making of Basewood." Issue #021 tells the story of the "Basewood Beard" that Alec grew during the last three and a half years of Basewood's creation.
This collection reprints five issues of Alec Longstreth's minicomic Phase 7 in their entirety: #012 is a stick figure science fiction story about a college and the barcode system it uses to keep track of its students. #013 reprints a comics essay in which the idea of everyday art is explored throughout art history. #014 is a facsimile of the sketchbook that Longstreth took on his first trip to Europe, for the 2009 Angoulême comics festival in France. It includes an account of his trip and many observational drawings created while traveling. #015 and #016 are comprised of selections from Longstreth's many sketchbooks, starting in 1995 and working up to 2008. Various quick drawings and loose diary comics reveal the cartoonist's struggles with relationships, employment, education and his future. All of these issues were released while Longstreth was focused on drawing his graphic novel Basewood, hence the title "B-Sides.
This paperback edition of Alec Longstreth's fantasy adventure comic Basewood reincorporates the covers, introductions and letters columns from its initial printing in the minicomic Phase 7. Also included are fan art drawings of the Basewood characters.
This collection reprints the first four issues of Phase 7 in their entirety: #001 features a twelve-page "silent" comic about escaping horrible office jobs, plus a variety of one and two-page comics with plenty of gags and jokes! #002 has three short stories: a trip to New York City with my friend Gabe, working as a scenic carpenter in L.A. and tree-hugging SPACE ALIENS! #003 is the epic story of my cross-country road trip with my friend Gabe. Drawn with stick figures in a journal-type Comics form. Adventure! Love! Hilarity! Danger! Gambling! #004 contains a semi-autobiographical tale that explores the idea of graffiti as art. I used all real graffiti from the streets of Seattle, WA. This book also features an all-new three page introduction and Phase 7 covers, introductions and letter columns.

Across the globe, the domain of the litigator and the judge has radically expanded, making it increasingly difficult for those who study comparative and international politics, public policy and regulation, or the evolution of new modes of governance to avoid encountering a great deal of law and courts. In On Law, Politics, and Judicialization, two of the world's leading political scientists present the best of their research, focusing on how to build and test a social science of law and courts. The opening chapter features Shapiro's classic 'Political Jurisprudence,' and Stone Sweet's 'Judicialization and the Construction of Governance,' pieces that critically redefined research agendas on the politics of law and judging. Subsequent chapters take up diverse themes: the strategic contexts of litigation and judging; the discursive foundations of judicial power; the social logic of precedent and appeal; the networking of legal elites; the lawmaking dynamics of rights adjudication; the success and diffusion of constitutional review; the reciprocal impact of courts and legislatures; the globalization of private law; methods, hypothesis-testing, and prediction in comparative law; and the sources and consequences of the creeping 'judicialization of politics' around the world. Chosen empirical settings include the United States, the GATT-WTO, France and Germany, Imperial China and Islam, the European Union, and the transnational world of the Lex Mercatoria. Written for a broad, scholarly audience, the book is also recommended for use in graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in law and the social sciences.
