Exemplary Violence explores the violent colonial history of the New Kingdom of Granada (modern-day Colombia and Venezuela) by examining three seventeenth-century historical accounts—Pedro Simón’s Noticias historiales, Juan Rodríguez Freile’s El carnero, and Lucas Fernández de Piedrahita’s Historia general—each of which reveals the colonizer’s reliance on the threat of violence to sustain order.
As best exemplified by the works of Pirandello, Svevo, Palazzeschi, and Gadda, Italian modernist fiction is particularly rich in bizarre and ludicrous characters, whose originality is often derided by a uniform society. On the other hand, laughter can also be used by the author (or by the misfits themselves) as a reaction to the levelling pressure of social life - Pirandello's umorismo, Svevo's irony, Palazzeschi's controdolore, and Gadda's satire are all good cases in point. Looked at from this perspective, early 20th-century Italian fiction can set the basis for an innovative reflection on broader comparative themes. What is the role of laughter and individual diversity in international Modernism? How is modernist eccentricity related to the representations of originality in the 18th and 19th centuries, from Sterne to Balzac and Dostoevsky? And what does it tell us about the fear of homogenisation as a crucial aspect of the modern social imaginary? Building on the analysis of a large corpus of short stories and other major works by the Italian authors at issue, as well as on a series of previously undetected intertextual links with the classics of European Realism, this book is the first systematic attempt at answering such questions. El caso de Rulfo es el del escritor que tiene mucho que decir -no tanto en extensión como en profundidad- y que por condicionamientos de su misma biografía se ve obligado a expresarse a través de personajes sumamente rústicos, "gente que aparte de ignorante casi no habla". Por lo que no le queda más que infiltrarse, si se quiere subrepticiamente, en el mundo interior de sus personajes y dotarlos de su propia sensibilidad artística para que puedan apreciar la realidad que los rodea y expresarse sobre esa realidad en consonancia con la visión del mundo que él, Rulfo, elabora a lo largo de su obra literaria.
Esta última nos propone, desde su título, el desafío de una mirada introspectiva. Más que un reparto de trabajadores habaneros, Alamar es, en esta novela, una alegoría cubana con la cual el autor persevera en su estilo aglutinador de la realidad, procurando mostrárnosla en su compleja amalgama y con un lenguaje polifónico en que la diversidad cultural de nuestro pueblo se revela en su consistente unidad. Sin ser arquetípicos ni caricaturescos, los personajes ilustran con sus nombres, apariencias y conductas, algunos aspectos de la variopinta sociedad de la isla, de tal forma que en ellos es posible que identifiquemos a algunos vecinos y nos reconozcamos nosotros mismos.
