While the prediction of observations is a forward problem, the use of actual observations to infer the properties of a model is an inverse problem. Inverse problems are difficult because they may not have a unique solution. The description of uncertainties plays a central role in the theory, which is based on probability theory. This book proposes a general approach that is valid for linear as well as for nonlinear problems. The philosophy is essentially probabilistic and allows the reader to understand the basic difficulties appearing in the resolution of inverse problems. The book attempts to explain how a method of acquisition of information can be applied to actual real-world problems, and many of the arguments are heuristic.
Reviews and extends the theory of Lie groups, develops differential geometry, proposing compact definitions of torsion and of curvature, and adapts the usual notion of linear tangent application to the intrinsic point of view proposed for physics. Uses a unifying illustration: two simple theories are studied with some detail, the theory of heat conduction and the theory of linear elastic media. Shows that the resulting equations derived in this manner differ quantitatively and qualitatively from those usually presented.

This book provides overviews and updates on basic research, diagnosis, epidemiology, and public health on enteric viruses, as well as on treatment and intervention to prevent their waterborne transmission. Data are presented and interpreted by leading researchers in the field in 13 chapters. An essential resource for virologists, epidemiologists, medical and public health professionals, graduate students and postdoctoral scientists at various levels of their careers. Key Topics Include: * Ecology of enteric viruses * Intervention measures from risk assessment to virus disinfection practices * Cutting edge technology on procedures for virus detection and monitoring in water and the water environment * Quality assurance and quality control measures in water virology * Legal regulations regarding viruses in the environment
Wherever grapevines are cultivated this book will be welcome because it fills longstanding need for a clear, concise treatment of modern viticulture. The chapters on vine structure, vine physiology, the grape flower and berry set, development and composition of grapes, and means of improving grape quality add to our knowledge of the vine and its functions. The text is designed to enable those concerned with either vine or fruit problems to arrive at considered diagnoses.
This concise but comprehensive textbook sets out the essentials of the science and clinical application of radiobiology for those seeking accreditation in radiation oncology, clinical radiation physics and radiation technology. Fully revised and updated to keep abreast of current developments in radiation biology and radiation oncology, the fourth edition continues to present in an interesting way the biological basis of radiation therapy, discussing the basic principles and significant developments that underlie the latest attempts to improve the radiotherapeutic management of cancer. New topics for the fourth edition include chapters on the mechanisms of cell death, biological response modifiers, and biological image guided radiotherapy, with major revisions to sections on the molecular basis of the radiation response, tumour hypoxia and the dose-rate effect. A variety of new authors have contributed to this revision, who, together with the new Editorial team, have used their significant international teaching experience to ensure the content remains clear and comprehensive, and as valuable to the trainee as it is to the established radiation oncologist. With the fourth edition we will see the most radical change so far - as Professor Gordon Steel has retired as Editor and has been replaced by Bert van der Kogel, the current current course director for the above-mentioned course, plus Michael Joiner, who is the head of the Radiation Biology Program at the Wayne State University and is the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Radiation Biology.
Molecular and Cell Biology of the Liver features the latest research findings regarding liver structure and function. A unique feature of the book is the brief science reviews that are included in each chapter which provide essential background information to allow readers to better grasp the subject matter within a chapter. The book covers liver biology from the molecular level to groups of liver cells and explains how groups of hepatocytes interact in similar microenvironments. Other important cell types found in the liver are also examined. Illustrations ranging from electron micrographs to fully rendered drawings act as visual aids to help readers understand complex structural-functional interactions. Molecular and Cell Biology of the Liver will benefit hepatologists, gastroenterologists, cell biologists, anatomists, toxicologists, and other researchers interested in liver structure and function.
