Truth Through Proof defends an anti-platonist philosophy of mathematics derived from game formalism. Alan Weir aims to develop a more satisfactory successor to game formalism utilising a widely accepted, broadly neo-Fregean framework, in which the proposition expressed by an utterance is a function of both sense and background circumstance.
Our father was not a writer. In fact the most he ever wrote to any of his children was a sentence or two at the end of a letter written by our mother. Not being a great writer, did not affect Father’ s ability to tell a story. He was a marvelous storyteller. Growing up we would plead with Dad to tell us stories of his childhood. We would cling to every word. We were never disappointed except when Dad finished and we had to go to bed. When we were grown, we would reflect with fondness to the special time spent listening to Father. As my brothers and I began to have families of our own we desired to share with our children Dad’ s stories so that they might experience some of those same feelings and memories we had as young boys. This book became a project of love born from the special memories and feelings of little boys listening to fantastic stories told by a loving father. We asked Dad to please write down his life’ s history for the benefit of his posterity. Alan, however, knew Father better than any of us. Rather than have Father sit and write, he asked Father to sit and tell stories. Initially the stories were clandestinely recorded, and later, as Father became familiar with the tape recorder, Father embraced the medium as the means by which he could openly share with his family his personal history.
This is a sequel to Dr Weir's undergraduate textbook on Lebesgue Integration and Measure (CUP. 1973) in which he provided a concrete approach to the Lebesgue integral in terms of step functions and went on from there to deduce the abstract concept of Lebesgue measure. In this second volume, the treatment of the Lebesgue integral is generalised to give the Daniell integral and the related general theory of measure. This approach via integration of elementary functions is particularly well adapted to the proof of Riesz's famous theorems about linear functionals on the classical spaces C (X) and LP and also to the study of topological notions such as Borel measure. This book will be used for final year honours courses in pure mathematics and for graduate courses in functional analysis and measure theory.
Lebesgue integration is a technique of great power and elegance which can be applied in situations where other methods of integration fail. Hemophilia appeared in a son born to Queen Victoria in 1853. Hemophilia was transmitted through Victoria’s unaffected daughters to the ruling houses in Germany, Russia and Spain. The political consequences of a chronically ill male heir to the throne fostered the demise of the royal families in these countries. The royal physicians were well aware of the hereditary nature of hemophilia and failed to advise the British royal family on this matter that had significant political consequences for the modern world. Part II The “Madness of King George III” resulted from variegate porphyria, an inherited disorder of heme metabolism. The disorder was evident in: The immediate family of George III, Ancestors from at least the 13th century, Descendents into the 20th century. The malady was inherited by other ruling houses in continental Europe and affected political life there for over six centuries. Genetic analysis will consider how such an anomaly could have been inherited through so many successive generations. Preliminary DNA evidence will be considered to document variegate porphyria in living relatives of the British royal family. Alternate history if these disorders had not plagued the royal families will be considered in conclusion.

A gripping account of the RAF’s attempt to destroy a Messerschmitt factory in 1944, and the carnage and confusion that unfolded on a dark winter night. Seventy-nine heavy bombers failed to return from the catastrophic raid on the industrial city of Leipzig on the night of February 19–20, 1944. Some 420 aircrew were killed and a further 131 became prisoners of war. It was at that time the RAF’s most costly raid of World War II by far. The town was attacked in an attempt to destroy the Messerschmitt factory that was building the famous and deadly Bf 109 fighter. The bomber stream flew into what appeared to be a trap. It seemed that the Luftwaffe and anti-aircraft guns were aware of the intended target and waiting to pounce as soon as the bombers crossed the coast. They were subjected to constant attack by night fighters and intense flak until those aircraft that remained clawed their way home and secured relative safety over the North Sea. This book analyzes what went wrong. Espionage played a part, and two bombers collided shortly after takeoff, as did others as they wove their way through enemy searchlights and maneuvered violently to escape Luftwaffe night fighters. At the outset poor navigational and meteorological briefings had hindered the bombers’ attempts to locate the target, and confusion reigned. The author explains the concept of this third raid on Leipzig and describes the two previous ones in October and December 1943, both of which had been deemed successes. He looks at the third raid from every angle, including the defending force’s, and describes the daylight raid that followed on the 20th by the USAAF. The book also includes appendices listing all RAF aircraft and crew on the raid, route maps, and many photographs.
