The Knowing of Thomas James In May of 1906 a telegram was delivered to the Methodist Manse, home of the Reverend Thomas Albert James, in Albany on the Southern tip of Western Australia. Mr James has been accidentally drowned. Body not recovered. Particulars posted today. Deep regret. Robert Hunter. These few words were to alter forever the lives of the James family. They were to unleash such a scandal that Thomas’s family fled the town in shame and his church ex communicated him. The true story behind these events ran in newspapers across the country throughout 1906. This truth was deliberately buried by Mrs James and the family; a taboo not to be mentioned; a mystery that remained hidden from successive generations for nearly a century. The Reverend Thomas James was no ordinary rural parson. He had risen to the pinnacle of leadership of the church in Western Australia but was a controversial character at loggerheads with the hierarchy of his church. In the aftermath of the events of 1906, the church records too were embargoed until the year 2000 such was the magnitude of his indiscretion. In 1906 Thomas James disappeared in circumstances that scandalized the church and shocked the family and society to the core. None of thirteen grandchildren ever knew their grandfather. All were denied the truth until this story was written. The Knowing of Thomas James has come as a revelation to his descendants. For one branch of the family knew who he had been but knew nothing of what became him and another branch of the family had absolutely no knowing of their grandfather at all. The impact and implications of this story are being felt to this day. The story was written as the result of more than two decades of research. It was a story that needed to be told for the sake of the families. It was told to honour a promise made to one of Thomas James’s grandchildren. A promise to my own father for Thomas Albert James is my great-grandfather. Essentially this is a family history and that was its design, however, it was my opinion that many family histories have limited appeal to any but those connected. It was always my intention to take the factual bones of research and imbue them with the flesh and blood of feelings and emotions. I have tried to enter the hearts and minds of the many characters touched by these tumultuous events in a story that has appeal to all. Each of the characters in this drama is introduced as the family moves across the years toward the fateful point in time when the shocking events unfold. For the family, the facts are presented in detail for all to find. I make no apology for the creative licence taken in interpreting these events and attributing motives to those involved in this story. I have created my own explanation of the actual events portrayed in a way that I hope is attractive for readers who have no personal connection to this story. I have liberally included actual material as and when I felt it appropriate to do so with the generous support of the newspapers of the day. This is a fiction built on the truth of a very real story. Were this story to be played out today it would surely make the headlines and be fed upon by our salacious modern media. However these events were set in a time long passed, in the strict moral world of Victorian Australia at the opening of the twentieth century. My great grandmother and her children sought refuge from the humiliation of these events by moving to a farm on the beautiful Kalgan River twenty miles east of Albany. My grandfather and then my father, in his turn, farmed this property. Today my brother is the farmer and I too live on the property within sight of the original farmhouse and of the river. I am by profession a teacher of History and have worked for more than twenty five years at the main High School in Albany. I knew nothing of the story until 1988 when I encountered reference to Thomas James in the history of his sister’s family. Not

This book offers an analysis of the French clitic object pronouns lui and le in the radically functional Columbia school framework, contrasting this framework with sentence-based treatments of case selection. It suggests that features of the sentence such as subject and object relations, normally taken as pretheoretical categories of observation about language, are in fact part of a theory of language which does not withstand empirical testing. It shows that the correct categories are neither those of structural case nor those of lexical case, but rather, semantic ones. Traditionally, anomalies in the selection of dative and accusative case in French, such as case government, use of the dative for possession and disadvantaging, its use in the faire-causative construction, and other puzzling distributional irregularities have been used to support the idea of an autonomous, non-functional central core of syntactic phenomena in language. The present analysis proposes semantic constants for lui and le which render all their occurrences explicable in a straightforward way. The same functional perspective informs issues of cliticity and pronominalization as well. The solution offered here emerges from an innovative instrumental view of linguistic meaning, an acknowledgment that communicative output is determined only partially and indirectly by purely linguistic input, with extralinguistic knowledge and human inference bridging the gap. This approach entails identification of the pragmatic factors influencing case selection and a reevaluation of thematic-role theory, and reveals the crucial impact of discourse on the structure as well as the functioning of grammar. One remarkable feature of the study is its extensive and varied data base. The hypothesis is buttressed by hundreds of fully contextualized examples and large-scale counts drawn from modern French texts.
The Civil Rights Act of 1875, enacted March 1, 1875, banned racial discrimination in public accommodations – hotels, public conveyances and places of public amusement. In 1883 the U.S. Supreme Court declared the law unconstitutional, ushering in generations of segregation until 1964. This first full-length study of the Act covers the years of debates in Congress and some forty state studies of the midterm elections of 1874 in which many supporting Republicans lost their seats. They returned to pass the Act in the short session of Congress. This book utilizes an army of primary sources from unpublished manuscripts, rare newspaper accounts, memoir materials and official documents to demonstrate that Republicans were motivated primarily by an ideology that civil equality would produce social order in the defeated southern states.

For ninety per cent of our history, humans have lived as 'hunters and gatherers', and for most of this time, as talking individuals. No direct evidence for the origin and evolution of language exists; we do not even know if early humans had language, either spoken or signed. Taking an anthropological perspective, Alan Barnard acknowledges this difficulty and argues that we can nevertheless infer a great deal about our linguistic past from what is around us in the present. Hunter-gatherers still inhabit much of the world, and in sufficient number to enable us to study the ways in which they speak, the many languages they use, and what they use them for. A Marriage Below Zero is the first novel in English to explicitly explore the subject of male homosexuality. Written by a British émigré to America, the New York theater critic Alfred J. Cohen, under the pseudonym of “Alan Dale,” this first-person narrative is told by a young Englishwoman, Elsie Bouverie, who gradually discovers that her new husband, Arthur Ravener, is romantically involved with another man. Denounced on publication (“a saturnalia in which the most monstrous forms of human vice exhibit themselves shamelessly,” wrote one reviewer), the novel was published during the public exposure of a London homosexual brothel frequented by upper-class men and telegraph boys. A Marriage Below Zero reflected late-nineteenth-century fears and anxieties about homosexuality, women’s position in marriage, and the threat that seemingly new, illicit forms of desire posed to marriageable women and to the Victorian family. This Broadview edition includes excerpts from the era’s pro-homosexual tracts, scientific and legal documents, contemporary feminist commentary on the new “dandyism,” and newspaper accounts of late-Victorian same-sex scandals. This biography is about one of North Carolina's early governors, an advocate for public education in the post-Colonial period. Benjamin Smith (1757-1826) came from a distinguished South Carolina family and acquired enormous wealth in the Cape Fear region as a member of the planter class. Like his elite white peers, Smith was active in public life, in county government and as a legislator in state politics. He promoted public schools, the University of North Carolina, domestic manufacturing, banking, penal reform, and internal improvements. Earning the nickname "General" because of his militia activities, he rose to governorship but ended up dying in poverty.
In the half century preceding imperial control approximately eight hundred Britons lived and travelled in East and Central Africa. Prelude to Imperialism (1965) examines their relations with and attitudes to African tribal societies.
