Tourism-related change is approached from a framework that illustrates the changing environments in which they occur, including the spatial scale of such impacts and the effects of these impacts over time. This framework is then applied to the economic, socio-cultural and physical dimensions of tourism. After examining the different forms of tourism-related impacts, the book then discusses the role of planning as part of an integrated approach to the mitigation of undesirable impacts and the maximization of the desirable benefits of tourism development. This is an account of the men of Mid Cheshire who answered the call to arms in 1914 and the families they left behind as reported in the local press of the time. The book tells the story of how they joyfully went to war believing it would be "All over by Christmas" before eventually discovering its true horror. You can read how the Cheshire Regiment made a gallant stand at Audregnies which saved the BEF after the Battle of Mons but cost them 78% of their compliment. You will also read of the people at home who tried to carry on without them. How they raised funds to support the war and made "comforts" for their men at the Front and how they gave succour to the many Belgian refugees who came to the area having fled from the German hordes who had invaded their country. On a lighter note you will be informed of the local sports results and of the many people found to be "Drunk and Disorderly" and their punishments. But most of all it is about the men who when the call came to do their duty did so without a moment's hesitation, we should all be proud of their bravery and sacrifice and never forget them.

Looking-Glass Wars: Spies on British Screens since 1960 is a detailed historical and critical overview of espionage in British film and television in the important period since 1960. From that date, the British spy screen was transformed under the influence of the tremendous success of James Bond in the cinema (the spy thriller), and of the new-style spy writing of John le Carré and Len Deighton (the espionage story). In the 1960s, there developed a popular cycle of spy thrillers in the cinema and on television. The new study looks in detail at the cycle which in previous work has been largely neglected in favour of the James Bond films. The study also brings new attention to espionage on British television and popular secret agent series such as Spy Trap, Quiller and The Sandbaggers. It also gives attention to the more ‘realistic’ representation of spying in the film and television adaptations of le Carré and Deighton, and other dramas with a more serious intent. In addition, there is wholly original attention given to ‘nostalgic’ spy fictions on screen, adaptations of classic stories of espionage which were popular in the late 1970s and through the 1980s, and to ‘historical’ spy fiction, dramas which treated ‘real’ cases of espionage and their characters, most notably the notorious Cambridge Spies. Detailed attention is also given to the ‘secret state’ thriller, a cycle of paranoid screen dramas in the 1980s which portrayed the intelligence services in a conspiratorial light, best understood as a reaction to excessive official secrecy and anxieties about an unregulated security service. The study is brought up-to-date with an examination of screen espionage in Britain since the end of the Cold War. The approach is empirical and historical. The study examines the production and reception, literary and historical contexts of the films and dramas. It is the first detailed overview of the British spy screen in its crucial period since the 1960s and provides fresh attention to spy films, series and serials never previously considered.

Investigating the ways in which police practices have evolved in relation to labour strikes and protests, Intelligent Control examines the means by which police forces have developed more coercive and consent-based approaches to regulating social unrest. Willem de Lint and Alan Hall argue that police forces have been gradually adapting public order operations to match or reflect wider trends in politics and society. The main such development is the enfolding of neoliberalism. Police and labour and protester adaptations have followed a fine line between legitimacy and illegitimacy, consent and coercion. The authors explore the development of consent policing from its roots in labour strike countering and the emergence of what they call 'intelligent control' from expanded covert, intelligence-gathering operations. A concise study of how police practices changed from the 1960s to the present day, Intelligent Control is an informative account of a revolution in modern policing.

This wonderfully written book tells of the first Herculean expeditions to Antarctica, from astronomer Edmond Halley's 1699 voyage in the Paramore to the sealer John Balleny's 1839 excursion in the Eliza Scott, all in search of land, glory, fur, science, and profit. Life was harsh: crews had poor provisions and inadequate clothing, and scurvy was a constant threat. With unreliable--often homemade--charts, these intrepid explorers sailed in the stormy waters of the Southern Ocean below the Convergence, that sea frontier marking the boundary between the freezing Antarctic waters and the warmer sub-Antarctic seas. These men were the first to discover and exploit a new continent, which was not the verdant southern island they had imagined but an inhospitable expanse of rock and ice, ringed by pack ice and icebergs: Antarctica.
