Neuromuscular Function and Disorders focuses on the various processes underlying disordered neuromuscular function. Topics covered include the nature of membrane defects in myotonia and familial periodic paralysis; the disorder of neuromuscular transmission responsible for myasthenia gravis and the various pseudo-myasthenic syndromes; and the disorders of Schwann cell function which cause demyelination. This book is comprised of 28 chapters divided into two sections and begins with a discussion on the normal anatomy and physiology of peripheral nerve and muscle. Included in the first section are descriptions of the ionic mechanisms responsible for the resting and action potentials of nerve and muscle; the sequential stages in neuromuscular transmission; excitation-contraction coupling; the sliding filament mechanism of myofibrillar shortening; and the morphological and functional properties of motor units. The neurophysiology of exercise and muscle fatigue is also considered, along with the nature of the trophic influences exerted by the motoneuron and muscle fiber upon each other. The second half of the book deals entirely with various diseases of peripheral nerve and muscle, together with diagnostic procedures and therapeutic management. A consistent theme in this section is the recognition of neural abnormalities in diseases hitherto considered as primary disorders of the muscle fiber. This monograph should be of value to neurologists, medical students, research workers, and students and research scientists in physiology, zoology, pharmacology, kinesiology, and physical education.

Afro-Latinos in the U.S. Economy outlines the current position and status of Afro-Latinxs in the economy of the United States. Very little research has thus far been disseminated in the field of economics on the contributions of Afro-Latinxs regarding income and wealth, labor market status, occupational mobility, and educational attainment. On the other hand, cultural studies, literary criticism, and social science fields have produced more research on Afro-Latinxs; the discipline of economics is, thus, significantly behind the curve in exploring the economic dimensions of this group. While the Afro-Latinx community constitutes a comparatively small segment of the U.S. population, and is often viewed as the nexus between two of the country’s largest minority groups—African Americans and Latinxs, who comprise 13 percent and 17 percent, respectively, of the U.S. population—Holder and Aja outline how the group’s unique economic position is different than non-black Latinxs. Despite possessing higher levels of education relative to the Latinx community as a whole, U.S. Afro-Latinxs do not experience expected returns in income and earnings, underscoring the role anti-Blackness plays in everyday life regardless of ancestral origin. The goal of this book is to provide a foundation in the economic dimensions of Afro-Latinxs in the U.S. which can be used to both complement and supplement research conducted on this group in other major disciplines. “

A humorous and engaging account of the bored and dysfunctional very rich who subscribe to this lifestyle and the obvious pitfalls that ensue, as shared by the author, who has been an employee and confidant to these participants for decades. The flies, floats, and flirts lifestyle of Harp, who prefers to rent women with his famous tagline of how much, how long, and when do we get started, is compared to that of Herschel, a wealthy industrialist from the Great White North. They fly their own seaplanes, are married, with children and grandchildren, and addicted to male erectile dysfunction medicine. Herschel enjoys companionship, be it for a week or a month, introducing these women as the girlfriend, much to the chagrin of his suspicious wife, Sadie, who knows he is doing this but cant prove it. Harp cuts to the chase for sex, while Herschel entertains the women in his fleet of aircraft, hoping to score with the multi-mile-high club in his jet and savor a victory at sea in the seaplane. His family fears for their inheritance with each new girlfriend he acquires. The author has worked for other wealthy males who fly their own aircraft but can only flirt with women. Acting as tough alpha males within their own peer group, they are spineless at the thought of losing their fortunes should they ever get caught. Insanely jealous of Harp and Herschel, they lavish exorbitant sums of money on their aircraft and boats, which have become their mistresses.
