Among the numerous letter-writing manuals which were printed in eighteenth-century Britain, a few were authored by such famous novelists as Samuel Richardson or Daniel Defoe. The present volume is a first-time edition of an autograph manual devised by William Gilpin, commonly known as one of the theoreticians of the picturesque, which he intended either for individual use in the schools he was teaching or for publication. The manual was exclusively devised for boys and men. Although its primary purpose was to provide models of letters on various occasions (at school, in apprenticeship, in debts, in mourning), its content is also partly fictional, since several groups of letters provide short stories about the lives of young soldiers writing home, reformed rakes making a fortune in India or fathers trying to correct their sons’ misdemeanours. The whole tone is highly moral, since the manual was also conceived as a work of edification. As such, it is an excellent counterpart to the correspondence which William Gilpin exchanged with his grandson, William Writes to William: The Correspondence of William Gilpin (1724–1804) and his Grandson William (1789–1811) (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2014). At the time of his bar mitzvah at age thirteen, Alain Amzallag acquired an intense, consuming desire to eradicate cancer once and for all. This obsession, in fact, dictated his choice of courses and programs through his school years. That included at high school, his undergraduate study and lab work at McGill University in Montreal, as well as graduate work at New Yorks Cornell Universitys Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Sloan-Kettering Division, and Rockefeller University as a specially invited student. The author chose science courses and university programs for one reason alone: to maximize his preparation for the task at hand, namely to find that elusive cure. As well, the author registered in several successive undergraduate Honors programs at McGill, most notably; From 1967 to 1968Honors Microbiology and Immunology and Virology From 1968 to 1869Honors Bacterial Genetics From 1969 to 1970Honors Molecular Genetics and Honors Biochemistry. In September 1971, Amzallag began his research in immunogeneticsthat is, the study of cell surface components (antigens and/or receptors)using various immunological techniques and this, in various histocompatibility [(H-2) and T-Brachyury loci in mice]. The author used immunofluorescence to study lymphocytes and fresh frozen sections of 1 m in thickness. This enabled Amzallag to visualize as adjacent cells have a membrane in common.
A major area of interest in French geomorphology during the last quarter of a cen- tury has been to understand denudation chronologies and the legacies of environ- mental change in shield regions. The mechanisms and consequences on landform patterns of differential erosion in plutonic, metamorphic and related cover rocks have been approached from the double angle of structural landforms in the landscape and petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical analysis in the laboratory. The detailed study of layered igneous intrusions has been particularly helpful in making progress more generally in the understanding of crystalline landform configurations of base- ment terrains. The Laboratoire de Geographic Physique CNRS-URAiai. nowreformed as twin research units (Paris: CNRS-UMR8591, and Clermont-Ferrand: CNRS-UPRES- A6042), and itsprecursor research group at the Sorbonne under the guidance of Pierre Birot, constituted the spawning ground for French research on the geomorphology of basement terrains. Alain Godard masterminded much of the research synthesised in this volume, which isbased on apreviously publishededition in French. YannickLageat and Jean-Jacques Lagasquie have not only upheld the spirit of this school of geomor- phology but also introduced novel concepts and methods to the investigation of crys- talline terrains. They have also maintained geomorphological research abreast of con- temporarydevelopments in the geosciences.
