Computers and interactive computer graphics provide the possibility of automation for this type of analysis, thus making the task of robot designers and users easier. This volume is concerned with mathematical modelling and graphics representation of robot performance (eg their fields of action, their performance index) as a function of their structure, mechanical parts and memory systems. Used in conjunction with operating specifications, such as movement programs and computer-aided design (CAD) data bases that describe parts or tools, these perform ance models can allow the potential of different robots or different models of the same type of robot to be compared, workstations to be organized efficiently, responses to be optimized, errors to be minimized and can make off-line programming by computer a real possibility. In the future, it is certain that the appearance of robots designed to monitor their own performances will allow applications and safety conditions to be considerably improved.

The dinical evaluation as weIl as to tumor pathophysiology are weIl explai ned in two general chapters and then each specific primary tumor is analyzed in a specific chapter. The choice was made to offer a multidisciplinary approach. One may thus find similar aspects repeated in different chapters, yet this is ne ces sary since each part of this textbook can be used as a specific reference. I was impressed by the carefully detailed humane approach to the patient information with care for the patient's dignity. Truthful information is explained dearly enough to give all the elements the patient needs to understand and accept neces sary treatments with a responsible attitude. Previously, when confronted with a patient suffering from a debilitating spine metastasis of a malignant tumor it has been almost always too late to offer anything more than compassionate ineffica cy. Surgical treatment was balanced with life expectancy and then only rarely indicated in certain specific cases.

Written by a Swiss physicist, it contains lots of beautiful novel ideas, inspired by nature and physics, ancient and modern philosophy, as well as by astrology, the I Ching and more... Please note that this book does not yet present these ideas in a way and format suitable for most readers. That will follow in other books by the same author. Instead, this book addresses anyone with a mind free enough to think outside of some of the usual ""boxes"", paired with imagination and also a more scientifically critical mind in the end, as implies the ""exact"" in exactphilosophy. In essence, first ""elements"" are tentatively defined from first principles, inspired mostly by Kant, then some correlations between these abstractly defined ""elements"" and the ancient Greek elements are revealed, as well as with the 8 trigrams of the Chinese I Ching, and more.

Inspired by analogies betwen the construction of heresy and the representation of madness described by Michael Foucault in in Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique (Madness and Civilization), The Notion of Heresy in Greek Literature in the Second and Third Centuries demonstrates how the concept of heresy emerges in the work of Justin Matyr. It shows that this invention created a concept capable of dominating every current suspected of endangering ecclesial harmony, and transformed the tradition of Greek historiography of philosophical schools by combining it with the apocalyptic theme of diabolical conspiracy. Le Boulluec examines how this model is refined by Irenaeus, then modified by Clement of Alexandria and Origen. First published in 1985 as d'hérésie dans la littérature grecque (IIe-IIIesiècles), this newly translated work includes a substantial new introduction surveying literature in the previous decades. In line wth Walter Bauer's pioneering book, which overturned the confessional model making heresy a later falsification of orthodoxy, it shows that the notion of heresy was invented in the second century and then refined in order to remove all legitimacy from diversity and pluralism in the fields of doctrine and practice. Le Boulluec studies rhetorical practices and polemical assimilations to highlight key debates on the relationship between philosophy, Christianity, and Judaism, and to examine the conflict of interpretations that drive the exegesis of the Bible in constructing an orthodoxy.

In his previous books Alain Touraine analysed the great changes that have transformed our personal and collective lives; in this new book he shows that we need to transform our ways of thinking about these changes. The very idea of society is in crisis: globalization and the liberation of desires from taboos have led to the collapse of the old social order. In our societies today, good and evil can no longer be defined by institutions; self-awareness is more important than the awareness of rules and subjects have become their own creators. Taking as his starting point a critique of what he calls the Dominant Interpretive Discourse, which tried throughout the twentieth century to impose the idea of a society without actors that was subject to various kinds of determinism (especially economic determinism), Touraine argues that the only principle that allows us to evaluate individual behaviour and social situations is the recognition of the political, social and cultural rights of all human beings, who are viewed as free and equal. The individual must be seen as a subject and treated as the cornerstone of a reconstructed sociology. Whereas some denounce individualism, the author celebrates a subjectivation that involves the defence of the rights of all against all modes of social integration. This general line of argument is made concrete through an analysis of the subordination of women, the exclusion of minorities and the difficulties young people face at school and at work. This major new book represents in many ways the culmination of twenty years of theoretical reflection which began with Critique of Modernity and which have established Touraine as one of the leading figures of contemporary social thought.
