All present will remember his actions of the day and some, hopefully all, will return home to hang up their guns to continue lives long enough to die as old men in the homes they protected "on that day". All would remember what was said and done that day, marking each man's history and legacy as long as memory lasted, and later, represented only by tradition or a few scraps of mostly overlooked worn paper and rusty, mouldering keepsakes. Few remember those common men now, since sight, sound, memory and emotion are gone. Their bravery and sacrifice are represented only by a few musty old artifacts but through these items it becomes easier to remember those angry souls who gambled everything for the equality of independence for themselves, their friends and family and for future generations. We must never forget those people and what they did for us, and we in turn, must be equally willing to sacrifice (like all our generations past), in keeping America free.

In I Remember Jazz, Rose draws on this unparallelled experience to recall, through brief but poignant vignettes, the greats and the near-greats of jazz. In a style that is always entertaining, unabashedly idiosyncratic, and frequently irreverent, he writes about Jelly Roll Morton and Bunny Berigan, Eubie Blake and Bobby Hackett, Earl Hines and Louis Armstrong, and more than fifty others. Rose was only twenty-two when he was first introduced to Jelly Roll Morton. He quickly discovered that they had more in common than a love of music. Something of a peacock at that age, Rose was dressed in a "polychromatic, green-striped suit, pink shirt with a detachable white collar, dubonnet tie, buttonhole, and handkerchief" -- and so was Jelly Roll. About Eubie Blake, Rose notes that he was not only a superb musician but also a notorious ladies' man. Rose recalls asking the noted pianist when he was ninety-seven, "How old do you have to be before the sex drive goes?" Blake's reply: "You'll have to ask someone older than me." Once in 1947, Rose was asked to assemble a group of musicians to play at a reception to be hosted by President Truman at Blair House in Washington, D.C. The musicians included Muggsy Spanier, George Brunies, Pee Wee Russell, Pops Foster, and Baby DOdds. But the hit of the evening was President Truman himself, who joined the group on the piano to play "Kansas City Kitty" and the "Missouri Waltz." I Remember Jazz is replete with such amusing and affectionate anecdotes -- vignettes that will delight all fans of the music. Al Rose does indeed remember jazz. And for that we can all be grateful.

Je le regardai interloque. Il poursuivit: {laquo}Regardez! Si vous prenez ce collier de laine et si vous le maintenez fermement avec un doigt place n'importe ou sur la toupie, eh bien! la toupie passera toujours juste en son interieur, sans laisser le moindre espace.)) This book is the second part of a comprehensive academic and research project initiated by H.E. Prof. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi. In the first part of the project, Eternal Imprints: Figures That Made History and Others That Changed the Future of Their Countries, first published in 2016, he wrote about personalities who achieved great accomplishments to influence their countries and the world. The second part of the project looks at historical events that triggered major shifts, both positive and negative, and changed the history of regions and countries, or humanity itself. In Events That Changed History, the author revisits events that made history from the perspective that history will never repeat itself. However, its events may share similarities. Therefore, a retrospective narrative of the past is in fact an attempt to better understand the present, and not a tendency to ponder on and seek refuge in the past. The book examines twenty issues and events relevant to different periods of history, which fall within categories such as politics, the military, the economy and technology. Some of these events took place in the Arab region and others outside it. Not content with analyzing events of the distant past, the author also covers a wide range of events from recent times, including the establishment of the UAE Federation in December 1971, the October War of 1973, the building of Aswan High Dam in 1970 and the attacks of September 11, 2001. The book also reviews historical events in which the past, present and future interplay. These events are closely linked to the sweeping changes the contemporary world is witnessing, which have implications for the future. This book is an invitation from an intellectual who is concerned with issues relevant to both his homeland and world; an invitation to comprehensively, and not selectively, re-read both our history and that of the world from an open and enlightened perspective, in order to narrate historical events the way they happened. Reno was truly Hell on Wheels in the 1920's. The rest of the nation considered the town Sodom and Gomorra, but that's only half the truth. Reno offered everything in the way of adult entertainment, from speakeasy's and houses of ill-repute, to open gaming - legal or not. And it took plenty of sins by the founding fathers to make Reno "The biggest little city in the world." When the gold-veins of Tonopah and Goldfield ran out, the casino owners moved to Reno, where even greater riches awaited. Together, a group of four men (Nick Abelman, Bill Graham, Jim McKay, George Wingfield) took over Reno's casinos and held sway over the town for the next three decades. Together they administered policy, collected juice, ran politicians, and owned the red-light district and most of the town's casinos. When that wasn't enough they took over the banks and laundered money for crooks like "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Alvin Karpis, and Ma Barker's boys, and offered safety to "Baby Face" Nelson. It was a good gig. The Reno Four dictated policy all over Northern Nevada, taking special care of Reno and Lake Tahoe casinos up until the late 1950's. Their influence made Reno before Bill Harrah or "Pappy" Smith ever arrived, needing an introduction and permission to build their own casinos, Harold's Club and Harrah's. This is an expansion, an unabridged version of "Mob City - Reno" with much to tell about Nevada's gold mining towns.
