While studies of San children have attained the peculiar status of having delineated the prototype for hunter-gatherer childhood, relatively few serious ethnographic studies of San children have been conducted since an initial flurry of research in the 1960s and 1970s. Based on the author’s long-term field research among several San groups of Southern Africa, this book reconsiders hunter-gatherer childhood using “play” as a key concept. Playfulness pervades the intricate practices of caregiver-child interactions among the San: immediately after birth, mothers have extremely close contact with their babies. In addition to the mother’s attentions, other people around the babies actively facilitate gymnastic behavior to soothe them. These distinctive caregiving behaviors indicate a loving, indulgent attitude towards infants. This also holds true for several language genres of the San that are used in early vocal communication. Children gradually become involved in various playful activities in groups of children of multiple ages, which is the major locus of their attachment after weaning; these playful activities show important similarities to the household and subsistence activities carried out by adults. Rejuvenating studies of San children and hunter-gatherer childhood and childrearing practices, this book aims to examine these issues in detail, ultimately providing a new perspective for the understanding of human sociality.

Metastasis is the spread of a disease from one organ or part to another non-contiguous organ or part. Only malignant tumour cells and infections have the capacity to metastasise. Cancer cells can "break away" from a primary tumour, penetrate into lymphatic and blood vessels, circulate through the bloodstream, and grow in a distant focus (metastasise) in normal tissues elsewhere in the body. Metastasis is considered a hallmark of malignancy. All tumours can metastasise albeit to varying degrees, barring a few exceptions (eg. Glioma and Basal cell carcinoma never metastasize). When cancer cells spread to form a new tumour, it is called a secondary, or metastatic tumour, and its cells are like those in the original tumour. This means, for example, that if breast cancer spreads (metastasizes) to the lung, the secondary tumour is made up of abnormal breast cells (not abnormal lung cells). The disease in the lung is then called metastatic breast cancer (not lung cancer). Only malignant tumour cells and infections have the capacity to metastasize. This book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.

This book is a revised and up-dated translation of Denki DendOsei Sankabutsu (Electronic Conduction in Oxides) published by Shokabo in Tokyo in 1983 as the second volume of the Material Science Series, which was edited for postgraduate students by T. Suzuki, S. Chikazumi, and S. Nakajima. Since the publication of the first edition, we have witnessed the historic discovery of high-Tc superconductors by J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller. Tbe Shokabo edition has thus been thoroughly revised to accommodate the recent developments, and K. Nasu joined as the fourth author. The constitution of the book is as follows: After a short introductory chapter, Chap. 2 is devoted 10 a brief review of transport phenomena and electronic states in oxides. It was written by Tsuda. In Chap. 3, the electron-phonon and electron electron interaction are treated theoretically by Nasu and Yanase. Nasu discusses the present status of theoretical studies of the electron-phonon interaction in solids and Yanase explains the electron correlation. Chapter 4 treats the physics ofvarious representative oxides in detail. Sections 4. 1-5 and 4. 10 were written by Tsuda and Sects. 4. 6-9 by Siratori. This chapter is intended not as an exhaustive review of the properties of each oxide, but rather as an illustration of the concepts which have developed out of the research into transport phenomena in conductive oxides. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, relapsing intestinal inflammatory condition with increasing incidence and prevalence around the world. Conventional and biological therapies have been successfully, or unsuccessfully, applied for the treatment of IBD and several new biological therapies are currently in clinical development. So far, more than 69 kinds of animal models have been established to study IBD, and they have provided significant contributions not only for understanding the mechanism of IBD but also for developing the rationale of new therapies. Although individual animal models can not fully reflect the pathogenesis of human IBD, the data from animal models—if a consensus is reached from many but not from one or few—may be used as a predictive factor of effectiveness for some biological therapies. Therefore, in this Chapter, we will discuss this possibility by comparing the data from animal models of IBD with data from some clinical trials.

In the course of their daily lives, peasants, fisherfolks, and merchants, who made specialty food available at the market, were in constant negotiation with powerful wholesalers and government authorities in charge of procuring specialty foods of the highest qualities for the shogun’s Edo Castle. Utilizing a number of previously unused archival materials that reveals the lives of those at the bottom of the society, the book traces the production, supply, and handling of specialty foods and shows how ordinary people were empowered to assume control over the distribution of specialty food, eventually affecting their procurement for the shogunal kitchen. In doing so, they disrupted the existing market order on the shogunal requisition, and led to the reconfiguration of market relations.

In this thesis, the author develops new high-power millimeter wave techniques for measuring the hyperfine structure of positronium (Ps-HFS) directly for the first time in the world. Indirect measurement of Ps-HFS in the literature might have systematic uncertainties related to the use of a static magnetic field. Development of the millimeter wave devices supports the precise determination of Ps-HFS by directly measuring the Breit-Wigner resonant transition from o-Ps to p-Ps without the magnetic field. At the same time, the width of the measured Breit-Wigner resonance directly provides the lifetime of p-Ps. This measurement is the first precise spectroscopic experiment involving the magnetic dipole transition and high-power millimeter waves. The development of a gyrotron and a Fabry-Pérot cavity is described as providing an effective power of over 20 kW, which is required to cause the direct transition from o-Ps to p-Ps. Those values measured by the newly developed millimeter wave device pave the way for examining the discrepancy observed between conventional indirect experiments on Ps-HFS and the theoretical predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics.

A tennis volley is therefore pronounced in British style, bore, not as American bare. Oru means "all" but has a more limited usage. Bosu is often used more negatively than English boss. Many people imagine that speakers of English who study the Japanese language find their way eased by the profusion of "English words" the Japanese have borrowed. Students of the language, however, often complain that borrowed words are more problematic than the older terms in the Japanese word pool. One of the biggest problems is the lack of adequate reference materials on the terms. Many of the existing works do little more than define the terms. This book handles the problematic areas. Here a reader will find sample sentences, tips on usage, and warnings against easy-to-commit mistakes. There are fascinating studies of how certain "English" terms were coined in Japan and of what led the Japanese to redefine certain common English words. Miura examines how certain words entered Japanese, and why they became popular. He theorizes on why an unexpected pronunciation developed. In discussing the borrowed terms, the author draws on many linguistic scholars, discusses prevailing beliefs on etymology and pronunciation, and uses his own considerable experience with both English and Japanese to help the student gain control of some of the most problematic words borrowed by J apanese from English . Each of the 850 words discussed under the text's more than 350 main headings is included in a n index for quick reference.
