This book presents an extensive study on the effectiveness of recent regulations on pharmaceutical prices in India, exploring the weaknesses in the design and implementation of pharmaceutical price controls and investigating what can be done to fix the broken system. In addition, it examines the extent to which essential medicines are actually made affordable by price controls. The book argues that companies make the pharmaceutical price control regime largely ineffective by coordinating to increase pre-regulation prices; by diversifying horizontally away from the regulated markets and increasing prices in the unregulated markets; by manipulating trade margins; and by refusing to comply with the regulation because the penalties remains negligible. The book draws on extensive empirical research involving India’s 2013 Drug Price Control Order and widely-used medicines such as paracetamol and metformin to illustrate how firms have weakened regulation. It argues that the regulatory regime can be strengthened by using systematic analysis of product- and region-level data in the Indian pharmaceutical industry, and by screening for the strategies that firms currently employ to circumvent regulation. In closing, it discusses recent efforts to strengthen the implementation of price controls in India and expanding the scope of price controls to medical devices.

When we explore our own past, we expect our leaders be it in the form of god, king, or entrepreneur, to be 'Sarva Guna Sampanna', i.e. one who has all identified competencies and qualities required to be the 'right' leader. Today the imperative for senior leaders is to keep actualizing the talent in themselves and also in the band of leaders all over, whether leading from the front or middle or behind.

While writing about Irrfan, it is impossible to speak in the past tense. Even though some people are not physically present in this world, they remain present in our thoughts and emotions. When you think about them even for a moment, you can see their image emerging right in front of you. I first met Irrfan in the last months of 1990. I met him with his partner Sutapa Sikdar during their meeting with my cousin Alka Srivastava and her husband Ishaan Trivedi. Irrfan had come to Mumbai aiming to test his talent. While reading this book, you will discover Irrfan's clarity of thought. He was clear from the very beginning that after completing NSD he would work in films. Films were his target and he achieved this goal with hard work and dedication. He succeeded in his aim. He had begun to spread his wings and was ready to soar... But that was not to be. He was caught unawares by a rare type of cancer. The hopes and dreams ended abruptly. I now feel that my every meeting with Irrfan remained incomplete. Many pages that could have been filled remained blank due to his death. Those blank pages keep fluttering, but nothing can be written on them now. I went through a unique experience while preparing the first eBook on Irrfan. I must have taken thousands of interviews, but never have I experienced this strange feeling before while writing them down. In the course of compiling the book, I have read and corrected the entire text several times.

But when the famous Babri Mosque in Ayodhya was destroyed in 1992, Jaipur burned while Ajmer remained peaceful; when the state clashed over low-caste affirmative action quotas in 2008, Ajmer's residents rioted while Jaipur's citizens stayed calm. What explains these divergent patterns of ethnic conflict across multiethnic states? Using archival research and elite interviews in five case studies spanning north, south, and east India, as well as a quantitative analysis of 589 districts, Ajay Verghese shows that the legacies of British colonialism drive contemporary conflict. Because India served as a model for British colonial expansion into parts of Africa and Southeast Asia, this project links Indian ethnic conflict to violent outcomes across an array of multiethnic states, including cases as diverse as Nigeria and Malaysia. The work explores the representation of socio cultural margins of caste and gender in Indian contexts in works of fiction written in various Indian languages in the twentieth century, taking representative samples from Hindi/Urdu, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam and English. The focus of enquiry is the narrativization of these important cultural and political questions in representative texts of fiction. What are the socio political and cultural implications and underpinnings of the representation of marginalization in the medium and genre of fiction, what could be the politics, ethics and aesthetics of such narrating, how far such representations are subversive or consensual/complicit, what are the limitations and pitfalls of such intervening radicalism in fictional narration all these questions are taken up in detail in the analyses. In the greater sense this study is also a critique of modernity and its discontents as it analyses the dialectics of modernity, its radical as well as reactionary aspects. A problematic premise of contextualizing the text and textualizing the context would also be prominent in the attempt. Fictional texts from five Indian languages including English (two texts from each language ) are incorporated in the study to ensure regional and linguistic representation within the limits of the availability of works in translation. Questions of class analytical perspectives in the context of Brahmanic patriarchy are explicated and critiqued. The need for a subaltern hermeneutics and the urgency of epistemological democratization are also discussed as a political and emancipatory outcome of the study. Both the formal as well as thematic concerns of the novel in the Indian languages are found to be shaped and determined by the material realities and associated attitudes and worldviews of caste and gender hierarchy emanating from internal imperialism. Though the ten texts chosen attempt intense critique of the gender question, the more profound and specific cultural question of caste evades comprehension and critical understanding. Caste often escapes as the un-representable in narration as it is in conversion.

This work is a product of the Inscriptions of India programme of the Indian Council of Historical Research, undertaken with a view to make inscriptions, dating from circa sixth to fourteenth century a.d., available in handy volumes. Part I of the volume introduces Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins and Somavamsins, who played a major role in shaping the destinies of the Chhattisgarh (Kosala) and the adjoining region of Orissa from about sixth to the early twelfth century a.d. It provides a background to the study of the inscriptions by attempting to deal with their formal aspects like the format, palaeography, language, orthography, contents and methods of dating and to trace, for the first time, the evolution of their draft. Part II presents the formal and historical aspects of the inscrip-tions, critically edited texts and fairly compre-hensive abstracts of the records of the Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins of Mekala and South Kosala, and Somavamsins of Kosala and Orissa. It also includes allied inscriptions like the Mallar plates of the Amararyakula chief Vyaghraraja and the Malga plates of Samanta Indraraja. Some of these inscriptions have not yet been published anywhere.
