This brief covers case studies on Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) and its mitigation. After reviewing the basics of corrosion, it focuses on MIC. MIC is a special type of electrochemical corrosion in which the presence of microbes and bacteria alters the chemistry of liquid media so as to make them more corrosive. These changes are harmful to metallic equipment, processing machinery, marine vessels, etc. in an environment that is host to a wealth of microorganisms. A 2007 US survey estimated corrosion-related damages to cost $276 billion a year, roughly 50% of which are due to MIC. The industries most affected by MIC are power production, oil exploration, transportation and storage, water distribution and more generally all industries involving marine environments. However, means for effectively preventing and controlling MIC are poorly understood. As such, the book’s later chapters address various mechanisms/processes that show promise with regard to MIC mitigation. Lastly, the book discusses the strategies currently being explored to mitigate MIC using green technologies.

While writing about Irrfan, it is impossible to speak in the past tense. Even though some people are not physically present in this world, they remain present in our thoughts and emotions. When you think about them even for a moment, you can see their image emerging right in front of you. I first met Irrfan in the last months of 1990. I met him with his partner Sutapa Sikdar during their meeting with my cousin Alka Srivastava and her husband Ishaan Trivedi. Irrfan had come to Mumbai aiming to test his talent. While reading this book, you will discover Irrfan's clarity of thought. He was clear from the very beginning that after completing NSD he would work in films. Films were his target and he achieved this goal with hard work and dedication. He succeeded in his aim. He had begun to spread his wings and was ready to soar... But that was not to be. He was caught unawares by a rare type of cancer. The hopes and dreams ended abruptly. I now feel that my every meeting with Irrfan remained incomplete. Many pages that could have been filled remained blank due to his death. Those blank pages keep fluttering, but nothing can be written on them now. I went through a unique experience while preparing the first eBook on Irrfan. I must have taken thousands of interviews, but never have I experienced this strange feeling before while writing them down. In the course of compiling the book, I have read and corrected the entire text several times.

This work is a product of the Inscriptions of India programme of the Indian Council of Historical Research, undertaken with a view to make inscriptions, dating from circa sixth to fourteenth century a.d., available in handy volumes. Part I of the volume introduces Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins and Somavamsins, who played a major role in shaping the destinies of the Chhattisgarh (Kosala) and the adjoining region of Orissa from about sixth to the early twelfth century a.d. It provides a background to the study of the inscriptions by attempting to deal with their formal aspects like the format, palaeography, language, orthography, contents and methods of dating and to trace, for the first time, the evolution of their draft. Part II presents the formal and historical aspects of the inscrip-tions, critically edited texts and fairly compre-hensive abstracts of the records of the Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins of Mekala and South Kosala, and Somavamsins of Kosala and Orissa. It also includes allied inscriptions like the Mallar plates of the Amararyakula chief Vyaghraraja and the Malga plates of Samanta Indraraja. Some of these inscriptions have not yet been published anywhere.
