Maeda Ai was a prominent literary critic and an influential public intellectual in late-twentieth-century Japan. Text and the City is the first book of his work to appear in English. A literary and cultural critic deeply engaged with European critical thought, Maeda was a brilliant, insightful theorist of modernity for whom the city was the embodiment of modern life. He conducted a far-reaching inquiry into changing conceptions of space, temporality, and visual practices as they gave shape to the city and its inhabitants. James A. Fujii has assembled a selection of Maeda’s essays that question and explore the contours of Japanese modernity and resonate with the concerns of literary and cultural studies today. Maeda remapped the study of modern Japanese literature and culture in the 1970s and 1980s, helping to generate widespread interest in studying mass culture on the one hand and marginalized sectors of modern Japanese society on the other. These essays reveal the broad range of Maeda’s cultural criticism. Among the topics considered are Tokyo; utopias; prisons; visual media technologies including panoramas and film; the popular culture of the Edo, Meiji, and contemporary periods; maps; women’s magazines; and women writers. Integrally related to these discussions are Maeda’s readings of works of Japanese literature including Matsubara Iwagoro’s In Darkest Tokyo, Nagai Kafu’s The Fox, Higuchi Ichiyo’s Growing Up, Kawabata Yasunari’s The Crimson Gang of Asakusa, and Narushima Ryuhoku’s short story “Useless Man.” Illuminating the infinitely rich phenomena of modernity, these essays are full of innovative, unexpected connections between cultural productions and urban life, between the text and the city.
Creativity: A Handbook for Teachers covers topics related to creativity research, development, theories and practices. It serves as a reference for academics, teacher educators, teachers, and scientists to stimulate further dialogue on ways to enhance creativity.
A pioneering and comprehensive introduction to the complex subject of integrated refinery process simulation, using many of the tools and techniques currently employed in modern refineries. Adopting a systematic and practical approach, the authors include the theory, case studies and hands-on workshops, explaining how to work with real data. As a result, senior-level undergraduate and graduate students, as well as industrial engineers learn how to develop and use the latest computer models for the predictive modeling and optimization of integrated refinery processes. Additional material is available online providing relevant spreadsheets and simulation files for all the models and examples presented in the book.
Get ahead! is an essential revision series for medical and surgical finals. Each title contains practice questions similar to those you can expect in the real exam. The series stands out in its use of subject summaries that include all the detail you would need from a larger textbook - but we've waived the waffle! If you are looking for a comprehen
A book showcasing the projects of Japanese architecture firm Suppose Design Office, founded by Makoto Tanijiri and Ai Yoshida. This is the first collection of works from the viewpoint of multiplicity and the design thinking of the creative team at Suppose Design Office, who are always seeking for something new. Based on an architectural perspective, the firm defines its work as discovering fresh ideas, new styles of buildings and new relationships between all interactive elements. They have designed workspaces, landscapes, products, art installations and more than 100 houses. Their interest in the problem-solving and creative challenges of architecture extends through all scales and budgets from ‘doghouses to skyscrapers’. Both the new and the familiar inform their search for fresh solutions to the issues of everyday life, which is explained in this book. This monograph offers an exclusive peek into the working life of a world-renowned design firm. By explaining the design processes for creating interior architecture, it is a vital book for anyone in the design industry, from interior designer to manufacturer, and from architect to space designer, as well as students, agencies and professionals in the whole design sector. About the Author Makoto Tanijiri is one of the founding architects of Suppose Design Office. He is also a professor at Musashino Art University, Osaka University of Arts and Anabuki Design College. Ai Yoshida is one of the founding architects of Suppose Design Office. Features - Readers gain complete insight in the working methods of the architectural firm Suppose Design Office. - In-depth features of the different design projects realised by the firm’s founders Makoto Tanijiri and Ai Yoshida their team. - This is the first ever book about the work of Suppose Design Office and gives an in-depth look at the design processes. - Tanijiri and Yoshida define their work as a chance to realise fresh ideas about buildings and the relationships of all interactive elements.
This reference is dedicated to the problem of time-temperature stability of amorphous (non-crystalline) metal alloys with strongly nonequilibrium structure and unique physical and mechanical properties that are obtained by quenching from the melt at a rate that exceeds one millions of degrees c.o.s. second. As a stability test, the behavior of the plasticity of amorphous alloys is studied. The book examines the fundamental characteristics of amorphous alloys, the basic laws of structural relaxation, generalized information about the phenomenon of the ductile-brittle transition (temper embrittlement), the development of physically justified methods of predicting the stability of the properties, and provides information about the attempts of controlling the structure for the purpose of suppressing or deceleration of the ductile-brittle transition and, as a consequence, increasing the temperature and temporal stability of the amorphous state.
A comprehensive review of the theory and practice of the simulation and optimization of the petroleum refining processes Petroleum Refinery Process Modeling offers a thorough review of how to quantitatively model key refinery reaction and fractionation processes. The text introduces the basics of dealing with the thermodynamics and physical property predictions of hydrocarbon components in the context of process modeling. The authors - three experts on the topic - outline the procedures and include the key data required for building reaction and fractionation models with commercial software. The text shows how to filter through the extensive data available at the refinery and using plant data to begin calibrating available models and extend the models to include key fractionation sub-models. It provides a sound and informed basis to understand and exploit plant phenomena to improve yield, consistency, and performance. In addition, the authors offer information on applying models in an overall refinery context through refinery planning based on linear programming. This important resource: -Offers the basic information of thermodynamics and physical property predictions of hydrocarbon components in the context of process modeling -Uses the key concepts of fractionation lumps and physical properties to develop detailed models and workflows for atmospheric (CDU) and vacuum (VDU) distillation units -Discusses modeling FCC, catalytic reforming and hydroprocessing units Written for chemical engineers, process engineers, and engineers for measurement and control, this resource explores the advanced simulation tools and techniques that are available to support experienced and aid new operators and engineers.
Photonic MEMS devices represent the next major breakthrough in the silicon revolution. While many quality resources exist on the optic and photonic aspect of device physics, today’s researchers are in need of a reference that goes beyond to include all aspects of engineering innovation. An extension on traditional design and analysis, Photonic MEMS Devices: Design, Fabrication, and Control describes a broad range of optical and photonic devices, from MEMS optical switches and bandgap crystal switches to optical variable attenuators (VOA) and injection locked tunable lasers. It deals rigorously with all these technologies at a fundamental level, systematically introducing critical nomenclature. Each chapter also provides analysis techniques, equations, and experimental results. The book focuses not only on traditional design analysis, but also provides extensive background on realistic simulation and fabrication processes. With a clear attention to experimental relevance, this book provides the fundamental knowledge needed to take the next-step in integrating photonic MEMS devices into commercial products and technology.
