In this context, the authors’ efforts to compile their observations as well as those of other clinicians and to elaborate their theories have resulted in an ess- tial step in the field of cerebral palsy (CP). The originality of the book is its very clear focus, while at the same time the authors have encouraged the book’s contributors to express their ideas and personal opinions. This leads sometimes to redundancy, but this is precisely one of the benefits of the book - cause the same problems are then exposed from different points of views. The reader is thus spared the normative attempts of many other pathology books, in which the compl- ity of a given disease is hidden by the authors’ or editors’ desire to impose a rigid taxo- my or epidemiology.
A provocative analysis of how Christianity helped legitimize the death penalty in early modern Europe, then throughout the Christian world, by turning execution into a great cathartic public ritual and the condemned into a Christ-like figure who accepts death to save humanity. The public execution of criminals has been a common practice ever since ancient times. In this wide-ranging investigation of the death penalty in Europe from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, noted Italian historian Adriano Prosperi identifies a crucial period when legal concepts of vengeance and justice merged with Christian beliefs in repentance and forgiveness. Crime and Forgiveness begins with late antiquity but comes into sharp focus in fourteenth-century Italy, with the work of the Confraternities of Mercy, which offered Christian comfort to the condemned and were for centuries responsible for burying the dead. Under the brotherhoods’ influence, the ritual of public execution became Christianized, and the doomed person became a symbol of the fallen human condition. Because the time of death was known, this “ideal” sinner could be comforted and prepared for the next life through confession and repentance. In return, the community bearing witness to the execution offered forgiveness and a Christian burial. No longer facing eternal condemnation, the criminal in turn publicly forgave the executioner, and the death provided a moral lesson to the community. Over time, as the practice of Christian comfort spread across Europe, it offered political authorities an opportunity to legitimize the death penalty and encode into law the right to kill and exact vengeance. But the contradictions created by Christianity’s central role in executions did not dissipate, and squaring the emotions and values surrounding state-sanctioned executions was not simple, then or now.

Justice Blindfolded gives an overview of the history of “justice” and its iconography through the centuries. This book discusses key ethical and deontological problems concerning the use of the most common information and communication devices. It focuses on the challenges of the new environments we now find ourselves in thanks to these technologies, and the issues arising from the newly established relationship between the virtual sphere and the real world. Each aspect is analysed by starting from a very specific example or a case study presenting a dilemma that can only be resolved by making a reasoned ethical choice. Rather than thematically addressing only one of the many aspects mentioned above (for example, computer ethics or social network ethics), the book presents a comprehensive introduction to, and a co-ordinated overview of, the various deontological and ethical issues regarding the spread of the most common information and communication technologies.
L'idea di trattare un argomento così vasto, come la biodiversità, mi è venuta in mente proprio pensando al piccolo paese dove vivo. Conoscere meglio ciò che ci è vicino è più facile sotto molti aspetti, pensare sempre al globale può fuorviare le menti e illuderle che qualcosa di concreto possa avvenire. Spesso riteniamo che le nostre azioni quotidiane non possano ricadere sull'ambiente e sulle ideologie che guidano la nostra società. Invece è dalle singole azioni di ognuno che si è costruita questa società che ora inizia a vacillare. Si ha la sicurezza che i Paesi sviluppati ormai godano di benessere e che non possano essere toccati dall'insufficienza alimentare e invece non è così. Se l'uomo continua senza sosta a sfruttare le risorse incidendo sugli equilibri naturali, l'umanità non avrà probabilmente scampo.
In un mondo come quello odierno, caratterizzato da un ́enorme capacità di autodistruzione, imparare a vivere insieme rappresenta, forse, uno dei maggiori problemi dell ́educazione. E' perciò necessario concepire un ́educazione che contribuisca a prevenire i conflitti e/o ad affrontarli pacificamente, sollecitando e sostenendo il rispetto verso l ́altro: una nuova pedagogia. Un insegnamento capace di valorizzare la persona nella sua interezza e di favorirne gli apprendimenti anziché mortificarla ed ostacolarla, deve prendere vita all'interno di una relazione improntata alla stima ed alla comprensione: in tal modo può contribuire alla costruzione di un'identità solida e serena, ricca di armonia e di equilibrio interiore.
