An argument that we should be optimistic about the capacity of “methodologically omnivorous” geologists, paleontologists, and archaeologists to uncover truths about the deep past. The “historical sciences”—geology, paleontology, and archaeology—have made extraordinary progress in advancing our understanding of the deep past. How has this been possible, given that the evidence they have to work with offers mere traces of the past? In Rock, Bone, and Ruin, Adrian Currie explains that these scientists are “methodological omnivores,” with a variety of strategies and techniques at their disposal, and that this gives us every reason to be optimistic about their capacity to uncover truths about prehistory. Creative and opportunistic paleontologists, for example, discovered and described a new species of prehistoric duck-billed platypus from a single fossilized tooth. Examining the complex reasoning processes of historical science, Currie also considers philosophical and scientific reflection on the relationship between past and present, the nature of evidence, contingency, and scientific progress. Currie draws on varied examples from across the historical sciences, from Mayan ritual sacrifice to giant Mesozoic fleas to Mars's mysterious watery past, to develop an account of the nature of, and resources available to, historical science. He presents two major case studies: the emerging explanation of sauropod size, and the “snowball earth” hypothesis that accounts for signs of glaciation in Neoproterozoic tropics. He develops the Ripple Model of Evidence to analyze “unlucky circumstances” in scientific investigation; examines and refutes arguments for pessimism about the capacity of the historical sciences, defending the role of analogy and arguing that simulations have an experiment-like function. Currie argues for a creative, open-ended approach, “empirically grounded” speculation.

T Though today he is hailed as one of Britain's greatest leaders, throughout his career, Winston Churchill was an outsider, accumulating a reputation for bad judgement and untrustworthiness. Only risk-takers and fellow outsiders would back him – but these strong and often feuding personalities proved to be vital to his decision-making in war and peace alike. Winston's Bandits provides, for the first time, a detailed account of his greatest friendships. These friends were Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, a press baron who craved power but only on his own terms; Frederick Lindemann, later Lord Cherwell, an ascetic and quarrelsome scientist who believed in Churchill's intellectual genius; Brendan Bracken, an Irishman from a humble background who reinvented himself as a major force in financial publishing and gave Churchill unconditional support; the young Bob Boothby, who would earn notoriety for adventurous sexual conduct and dubious financial dealings; Randolph Churchill, who was often a disappointment and burden to his father; and Duncan Sandys, who reaped the full benefits of being Churchill's son-in-law in his political career. Together, they were Winston's bandits. This remarkable book explores how Churchill's relationships with these forceful and intriguing sparring partners provide the key to understanding his greatest triumphs and disasters.
The remarkable story of one English family during the tumultuous seventeenth century, as revealed through their original letters and documents. "To know the Verneys is to know the seventeenth century," Adrian Tinniswood writes in this brilliant book. The Verney family's centuries-long practice of saving every piece of paper that came into their possession -- amassing some 100,000 pages of family and estate letters and documents -- resulted in the largest and most complete private collection of seventeenth-century correspondence in the Western world to date. They paint an incredibly accurate and detailed picture of life in England, Europe, and even the American colonies, through the everyday lives of one extraordinary family.
This book contains the collected works of A. Adrian Albert, a leading algebraist of the twentieth century. An earlier book, A Strategic Approach to Corporate Governance (Gower, 1999), examined corporate governance from a philosophical and 'big picture' standpoint. This book digs deeper and explores the operational issues around corporate governance, giving examples of good practice. It is a 'how to' book, which focuses on processes and practical issues, making the case for corporate governance in terms of measurable business benefits and competitive advantage. The author explores a number of key themes: ¢ How corporate governance has expanded in scope and importance worldwide. ¢ How to engage with the wider range of stakeholders whose support is essential for success in a competitive world. ¢ How to distribute power to those who need to use it to perform effectively at all levels in the organisation. ¢ How to encourage the behaviours needed to effect good governance. ¢ How to embed best practice in the daily routine of the organisation. ¢ How to adapt best practice to meet the needs of different organisations. ¢ How effective corporate governance can build sustainable business success. ¢ How corporate governance may evolve to meet the needs of the future. Corporate governance should address the needs of people seeking to cooperate effectively in a shared endeavour. It should be adopted, not imposed and Adrian Davies provides an eloquent and authoritative guide to this process.
In search of the proverbial good time, Chemistry Matters is a contemporary novel about two charismatic brothas who couldn't share more of a bond if they were actually brothers. Anton "MAJAC" Charles is a straight-shooting, Naval submarine officer whose only Achilles heel is wearing his heart on his sleeve. A hopeless romantic, Anton tries to free himself of the lonely life of a bachelor by diving head-first into courting the undeniably sexy Celeste. Jared "Jaz" Stevenson is a smooth-talking baritone, who was content leaving trails of broken hearts behind on his way to the NBA; that was, until he met a hot, spicy little thing from the Mi-sippi bayou who made him stand up and take notice. These lifelong best friends remained thick as thieves although distanced for several years. When reunited in San Diego, they find themselves intermingling with the sexes and entwined in a web of turbulent relationships. Heart-pumping sensuality and tantalizing dialogue provide an intricate elixir of machismo and naiveté to this emotional rollercoaster of a novel that really makes readers wonder how good real chemistry could be. Although love is a road worth traveling, MAJAC and Jaz must endure trials, tribulations, and love beautiful women while struggling to find out if ... Chemistry Matters.
The end of the beginning... An epic conflict North Africa was a turning point for the British in the Second World War: a harsh landscape of sand and enemy tanks, but ultimately a place of victory, that Churchill famously called ‘the end of the beginning.’ When General Montgomery became commander of the Allied Eighth Army in 1942, he found the troops dispirited after a series of defeats by his nemesis, General Rommel. However, under Monty’s inspired leadership the army turned their fortunes around, going on to win seven battles and driving the enemy out of North Africa. However, little credit has been attributed to the Eighth Army for its victories, and even the legendary Battle of El Alamein has been consistently underrated. This highly informed and gripping account brings to light how the troops, and their leaders, won these decisive battles, and helped to win the war. Lucid and accessible, this masterly account is vital reading for all enthusiasts of military history. Perfect for readers of Jonathan Dimbleby and Max Hastings.
To read many accounts, it would appear that the Eighth Army's victory at El Alamein was quickly followed by its triumphant arrival at Tunis. Adrian Turner, the experienced authority on the period, redresses the imbalance by describing brilliantly the progress of this legendary fighting force and describing the ferocity of such battles as that for the Mareth Line. The author deftly handles strategic level thinking, the tactical battles and individual contributions. Aviation readers will be thrilled by recognition of the Desert Air Force's contribution, too often neglected.
The structure of corporate governance has made significant progress in OECD countries but it remains imperfectly linked to the activities of many businesses. Its advance on the global stage will be hesitant and slow until its practice in OECD countries is more consistent and convincing. The Globalisation of Corporate Governance explores the challenges of adapting it to different cultural norms and making corporate governance effective for all participants in a global economy.
The specialized jargon of some sports can be quite esoteric. Non-Americans, for example, are likely puzzled by baseball terms such as bunt, cut-off man, and safety squeeze, while the non-British may pause over cricket's Chinaman, doosra, golden duck, off-break, popping crease, and yorker. This new dictionary gives the definitions of more than 8,000 terms used in sports and games from around the world, including mainstream sports like basketball and billiards alongside the more obscure netball and snooker. Entries cover sports equipment, strategies, venues, qualifying categories, awards, and administrative bodies, while a comprehensive system of cross-references offers assistance and clarification when needed. An appendix lists standard abbreviations of sports ruling bodies and administrative organizations.
The interplay between combinatorics and theoretical physics is a recent trend which appears to us as particularly natural, since the unfolding of new ideas in physics is often tied to the development of combinatorial methods, and, conversely, problems in combinatorics have been successfully tackled using methods inspired by theoretical physics. We can thus speak nowadays of an emerging domain of Combinatorial Physics. The interference between these two disciplines is moreover an interference of multiple facets. Its best known manifestation (both to combinatorialists and theoretical physicists) has so far been the one between combinatorics and statistical physics, as statistical physics relies on an accurate counting of the various states or configurations of a physical system. But combinatorics and theoretical physics interact in various other ways. This book is mainly dedicated to the interactions of combinatorics (algebraic, enumerative, analytic) with (commutative and non-commutative) quantum field theory and tensor models, the latter being seen as a quantum field theoretical generalisation of matrix models.
With a strong focus on using less traditional forms of data, Doing & Writing Qualitative Research provides a new perspective on issues such as the role of the researcher and the impact they have on data, and also considers the impact of social, cultural, and political complexities across a range of disciplines. With fully updated examples and case studies as well as a strong focus on using less traditional forms of data like photographs, personal narrative, and creative non-fiction, Doing & Writing Qualitative Research introduces students to modern opportunities in data collection and sourcing that adds depth to their research. Find out how to: - Establish and construct research questions, frameworks, and paradigms - Engage with different styles and media of data - Present ideas clearly and persuasively - Approach sensitive issues of identity and avoid reductive judgements - Discover your individual writing voice Through its accessible advice and its exploration of social, cultural, and political complexities across disciplines, this book is appropriate for both novices and more experienced researchers and forms an essential tool for students engaging in qualitative research across a variety of fields.
This book critically examines the main features of intercultural communication. It addresses how ideology permeates intercultural processes and develops an alternative 'grammar' of culture. It explores intercultural communication within the context of global politics, seeks to address the specific problems that derive from Western ideology, and sets out an agenda for research.
An Introduction to Generalized Linear Models, Fourth Edition provides a cohesive framework for statistical modelling, with an emphasis on numerical and graphical methods. This new edition of a bestseller has been updated with new sections on non-linear associations, strategies for model selection, and a Postface on good statistical practice. Like its predecessor, this edition presents the theoretical background of generalized linear models (GLMs) before focusing on methods for analyzing particular kinds of data. It covers Normal, Poisson, and Binomial distributions; linear regression models; classical estimation and model fitting methods; and frequentist methods of statistical inference. After forming this foundation, the authors explore multiple linear regression, analysis of variance (ANOVA), logistic regression, log-linear models, survival analysis, multilevel modeling, Bayesian models, and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Introduces GLMs in a way that enables readers to understand the unifying structure that underpins them Discusses common concepts and principles of advanced GLMs, including nominal and ordinal regression, survival analysis, non-linear associations and longitudinal analysis Connects Bayesian analysis and MCMC methods to fit GLMs Contains numerous examples from business, medicine, engineering, and the social sciences Provides the example code for R, Stata, and WinBUGS to encourage implementation of the methods Offers the data sets and solutions to the exercises online Describes the components of good statistical practice to improve scientific validity and reproducibility of results. Using popular statistical software programs, this concise and accessible text illustrates practical approaches to estimation, model fitting, and model comparisons.
Books dealing with the mechanisms of enzymatic reactions were written a generation ago. They included volumes entitled Bioorganic Mechanisms, I and II by T.C. Bruice and S.J. Benkovic, published in 1965, the volume entitled Catalysis in Chemistry and Enzymology by W.P. Jencks in 1969, and the volume entitled Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms by C.T. Walsh in 1979. The Walsh book was based on the course taught by W.P. Jencks and R.H. Abeles at Brandeis University in the 1960's and 1970's. By the late 1970's, much more could be included about the structures of enzymes and the kinetics and mechanisms of enzymatic reactions themselves, and less emphasis was placed on chemical models. Walshs book was widely used in courses on enzymatic mechanisms for many years. Much has happened in the field of mechanistic enzymology in the past 15 to 20 years. Walshs book is both out-of-date and out-of-focus in todays world of enzymatic mechanisms. There is no longer a single volume or a small collection of volumes to which students can be directed to obtain a clear understanding of the state of knowledge regarding the chemicals mechanisms by which enzymes catalyze biological reactions. There is no single volume to which medicinal chemists and biotechnologists can refer on the subject of enzymatic mechanisms. Practitioners in the field have recognized a need for a new book on enzymatic mechanisms for more than ten years, and several, including Walsh, have considered undertaking to modernize Walshs book. However, these good intentions have been abandoned for one reason or another. The great size of the knowledge base in mechanistic enzymology has been a deterrent. It seems too large a subject for a single author, and it is difficult for several authors to coordinate their work to mutual satisfaction. This text by Perry A. Frey and Adrian D. Hegeman accomplishes this feat, producing the long-awaited replacement for Walshs classic text.
Tonia begins in Sicily and portrays life in the village in the turbulent years of Post-WWII. The village that had seemingly remained dormant for centuries, was suddenly restless and on the move. Many had left, mainly for the canefields of North Queensland, among them Tonia's husband, Enzo. Tonia recreates life in the village at the time and explores the raw emotions and soul searching associated with families being torn apart in the euphoria of new possibilities and new adventures. It is a story of struggle, of pain and joy, of hope, of human perserverance, but above all, it is a love story.
