During the 1930s, much of the world was in severe economic and political crisis. This upheaval ushered in new ways of thinking about social and political systems. In some cases, these new ideas transformed states and empires alike. Particularly in Europe, these transformations are well-chronicled in scholarship. In academic writings on India, however, Muslim political and legal thought has gone relatively unnoticed during this eventful decade. This book fills this gap by mapping the evolution of Muslim political and legal thought from roughly 1927 to 1940. By looking at landmark court cases in tandem with the political and legal ideas of Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's founding fathers, this book highlights the more concealed ways in which Indian Muslims began to acquire a political outlook with distinctly separatist aspirations. What makes this period worthy of a separate study is that the legal antagonism between religious communities in the 1930s foreshadowed political conflicts that arose in the run-up to independence in 1947. The presented cases and thinkers reflect the possibilities and limitations of Muslim political thought in colonial India.

This book presents an extension of fuzzy set theory allowing for multi-polar information, discussing its impact on the theoretical and practical development of multi-criteria decision making. It reports on set of hybrid models developed by the authors, and show how they can be adapted, case by case, to the lack of certainty under a variety of criteria. Among them, hybrid models combining m-polar fuzzy sets with rough, soft and 2-tuple linguistic sets, and m-polar hesitant fuzzy sets and hesitant m-polar fuzzy are presented, together with some significant applications. In turn, outranking decision-making techniques such as m-polar fuzzy ELECTRE I, II, III and IV methods, as well as m-polar fuzzy PROMETHEE I and II methods, are developed. The efficiency of these decision-making procedures, as well as other possible extensions studied by the authors, is shown in some real-world applications. Overall, this book offers a guide on methodologies to deal with the multi-polarity and fuzziness of the real-world problems, simultaneously. By including algorithms and computer programming codes, it provides a practice-oriented reference guide to both researchers and professionals working at the interface between computational intelligence and decision making.

In their effort to cross over into Afghanistan to locate David's whereabouts, Christina and Nader ---grandson of the family's benefactor from WWII---get kidnapped by Taliban at Peshawar while Nader's uncle is killed. After a month long captivity in the Tribal Areas, Nader digs himself out of a dungeon, frees Christina, avenges upon Taliban for killing his uncle, and tries to escape out of the region. In the ensuing manhunt by Taliban Nader and Christina fight valiantly and .... It is a story of love across generations and cultures which grapples with the tragic gulf created between cultures by the catastrophic events of 9/11; it unearths diverse mindsets.

During the course of the 18th century the British perfected the Atlantic slave system. Indeed, it has been estimated that between 1700 and 1810 British merchants transported almost three million Africans across the Atlantic. That the British benefited from the Atlantic slave system is indisputable. Yet, paradoxically, it was also the British who led the struggle to bring this system to an end. This book is an attempt to throw light on the anti-slavery movement which is still going on.

The average age of people has increased due to advances in health sciences, which has led to an increase in the elderly population. This is positive news, but it also raises questions about the quality of independent living for older people. Clinicians use Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) to assess older people's ability to live independently. In recent years, portable computing devices have become more present in our daily lives. Therefore, a software system that can detect ADLs based on sensor data collected from wearable devices is beneficial for detecting health problems and supporting health care. In this context, this book presents several machine learning-based approaches for human activity recognition (HAR) using time-series data collected by wearable sensors in the home environment. In the first part of the book, machine learning-based approaches for atomic activity recognition are presented, which are relatively simple and short-term activities. In the second part, the algorithms for detecting long-term and complex ADLs are presented. In this part, a two-stage recognition framework is also presented, as well as an online recognition system for continuous monitoring of HAR. In the third and final part, a novel approach is proposed that not only solves the problem of data scarcity but also improves the performance of HAR by implementing multitask learning-based methods. The proposed approach simultaneously trains the models of short- and long-term activities, regardless of their temporal scale. The results show that the proposed approach improves classification performance compared to single-task learning.

In some cases, these new ideas transformed entire political systems. Particularly in Europe, these transformations are well chronicled in scholarship. In scholarly writings on India, however, Muslim political thought has gone relatively unnoticed during this eventful decade. Instead, scholarship on Muslim India has so far privileged the early 1920s, where a movement to uphold the caliphate after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire briefly united Hindus and Muslims under Gandhi, and on the Pakistan movement of the 1940s. This book seeks to fill this gap. It maps the evolution of Muslim legal and political thought from roughly 1927 to 1940. By looking at landmark legal decisions in tandem with the political ideas of Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's founding fathers, this book highlights the more concealed ways in which Indian Muslims began to acquire a political outlook with distinctly separatist aspirations. What makes this period worthy of a separate study is that the legal antagonism between religious communities in the 1930s foreshadowed political conflicts that arose in the run-up to independence in 1947.
