The concluding chapters describe single-case research designs that support the efficacy of behavioral principles and address ethical questions and historic controversies surrounding the application of those principles. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) seek to change communicative behaviors in the clients they serve; the principles of behavioral science have many applications to the assessment and treatment of communicative disorders. There is a vast body of evidence indicating the efficacy of behavioral approaches in behavior modification, and SLPs have been tasked by their professional associations to employ evidence-based practices. Also, there is an appreciation for the usefulness of behavioral principles in treating clients with very severe communicative disorders, such as autism, apraxia, and dysfluency. This is evidenced by the development of the field of applied behavior analysis and the growing numbers of board certified behavior analysts (BCBA), with whom SLPs may be called upon to collaborate. Behavioral Principles in Communicative Disorders is primarily designed for practicing speech-language pathologists looking for detailed descriptions of evidence-based treatment procedures, as well as professors and students in university programs in communicative disorders. However, professionals in other fields, such as applied behavior analysis and special education, will also find this to be a highly useful text.

This monograph examines the place of repetition in perceived musical structure and in theories of music. Following a preface and introduction, there are four main chapters: 'Theory', 'Analysis', 'Metatheory and Meta-analysis', and 'Cognition and Metacognition'. Chapter 2 (Theory) sets out the principles underlying the creation and cognition of musical structure developed by the author in earlier studies, in the dual context of David Lewin's mathematically based theory of musical intervals and transformations and Gilles Fauconnier's concept of mental spaces (which was formulated in the context of cognitive science). Chapter 3 (Analysis) shows the theory in operation in relation to the first movement of Mozart's piano sonata K.333. It indicates how structural issues may be related to considerations of aesthetic response and musical 'worth' through comparison with J.C. Bach's Sonata op. 5 no. 3. Chapter 4 (Metatheory and Meta-analysis) uses the new theory to interrogate the propositions underpinning set theory and transformations, offering a psychomusicological critique and potential development of, for example, the work of Forte, Morris, Isaacson and Straus. This enables issues raised earlier in relation to the work of Lewin to be addressed. In conclusion, in Chapter 5 (Cognition and Metacognition), the matter of cognitive preferences and constraints is considered in relation to repetition in music, which permits a final investigation of different approaches to musical analysis to be undertaken. In summary, by synthesising the findings of diverse earlier work in the context of the new theory, it proves possible to move thinking forward on a number of fronts, and to indicate potential directions for future empirical and analytical developments.

Psychoanalysis is a historical discourse of suffering and healing under conditions of modernity rather than a metaphysical discourse of universal truth, and must be so due to the ontological indeterminacy of psychic life. Demonstrating this proceeds through the substantiation of two primary theses. First, pluralism in psychoanalysis, thus the perspectival character of psychoanalytic knowing, is irreducible. Second, psychic life is partially pliable to interpretive constitution rather than a self-subsistent object domain fully available to third-personal, objective description. Together, these theses provide the framework for a radical rethinking of the authority of psychoanalytic knowledge and practice and of the nature of psychoanalytic claims to objectivity. Psychoanalytic interpretations are best understood as existentially interrogative – they test who and how one might be – and if successful, to some extent identity formative. The validity conditions of psychoanalytic knowledge thus concern the creation/discovery of satisfactory forms of practice-orienting self-narration rather than those regularly operative in the natural sciences. However, an adequate assessment of psychoanalytic claims requires that the claims of science are given due consideration and the impediments to practice-orienting self-narration under conditions of late modernity are acknowledged.

ABOUT THE BOOK While experts have roundly debunked the popular notion that we feeble humans only utilize 10 percent of our brains, most of us still find ourselves secretly believing (or wishing) that there is uncharted territory upstairs to explore. As we get older, our brains – well, I don’t want to speak for you, so I’ll say my brain – increasingly fills with useless detritus; I will thus forget to buy a necessary item at the store, but will be able to sing along lyric-for-lyric with some old Def Leppard song during the drive home. Self-help books that promise to unlock your secret brainpower will mostly peddle you the same old platitudes. Where to turn when you want to take a serious tour through your own thought process? Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow hit the bulls-eye for me. While not a self-help book by any traditional definition, Kahneman’s work offers actionable insights about decision-making and gut reactions that did indeed help me to help myself. By breaking the brain into two separate – and sometimes competing – components (“System 1” and “System 2”), the author helps the reader recognize some very common pratfalls. MEET THE AUTHOR Adam McKibbin's work has appeared in a wide variety of magazines and websites, including The Nation, the Chicago Tribune, AlterNet, Paste and Punk Planet. He studied creative writing at the University of Wisconsin and received the Award for Academic Excellence for his collected fiction. Adam lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter, and can be found on Twitter at @TheRedAlert. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK In one example, the reader is asked to picture a passenger on the New York subway reading the Times, and to guess whether the person has a PhD or didn’t go to college at all. The common gut reaction is to pick the PhD, even though there are far fewer PhDs on the subway at a given time than passengers without college degrees. Not just taking a situation at its face value, even statistically speaking, runs counter to how System 1 is programmed to operate. Kahneman sprinkles some academic autobiography through the book as well. Part 2 includes a section on what he calls “the best-known and most controversial” of his experiments with Amos Tversky: a seemingly simple question about a young woman named Linda. Linda is introduced to the crowd as a young woman who majored in philosophy and kept active with various social causes. Kahneman’s audience then had to choose the most likely outcome for Linda. Was she a bank teller or a bank teller who was active in the feminist movement? Although the former is the smarter choice, an overwhelming number of undergraduates chose the latter due to the associations they were making about “Linda.” Even renowned scientist Stephen Jay Gould fell into the trap...
