This is a selection from over 250 papers published by Abdus Salam. Professor Salam has been Professor of Theoretical Physics at Imperial College, London and Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, for which he was largely responsible for creating. He is one of the most distinguished theoretical physicists of his generation and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1979 for his work on the unification of electromagnetic and weak interactions. He is well known for his deep interest in the development of scientific research in the third world (to which ICTP is devoted) and has taken a leading part in setting up the Third World Academy. His research work has ranged widely over quantum field theory and all aspects of the theory of elementary particles and more recently into other fields, including high-temperature superconductivity and theoretical biology. The papers selected represent a cross section of his work covering the entire period of 50 years from his student days to the present.
The latest edition of ?Ideals and Realities? includes some of the most recent talks given by Professor Abdus Salam. They replace a few essays which were published in the second edition. An attempt has also been made to update some of the figures rendered absolete with the passage of time.

But very few travel to Nunavut – A Land of Inuit. Md Abdus Salam – the author, had a chance to travel, live, and work in Arctic Bay – a small Nunavut community, for 12 years. Not many people in the world know about life in Nunavut. Many people in the southern part of Canada have no idea where and what Nunavut is, no question to speak about Arctic Bay, where Salam landed to teach in 2007. As he learned to survive the harsh winters and other challenges unique to the North, the Arctic also provided him amazing experiences, from polar bears to the aurora borealis, snowmobiles, and potable water problems. Used to living in a large community with many amenities, Salam faced some unique predicaments while living and teaching in the land of Inuit. In the North, he learned of Inuit culture, heritage, and hunting practices while learning to live in a land of extremes—including -60C cold, three months of complete darkness in the winter, and 24/7 daylight for three months in the summer. 1.1 INTRODUCTION: On August 15, 1947 India attained independence from the British domination. This gave the people of the country the fullest opportunity to mould their educational policy according to the nation. The independent India felt the great need of expansion of education. The newly formed National Government took active and sincere steps to make the elementary education free, universal and compulsory. The principle of compulsory education was declared through Article 45 of the constitution of India. Article 45 of the constitution of India has laid down that “The state shall endeavour to provide, within a period of ten years, from the commencement of the constitution, for free and compulsory education for all children until they complete the age of fourteen years.” It was also made clear that this education would be of basic type. On this basis, Board of National education was established. Our Government has been making vigorous efforts to expand compulsory primary education in all corners of the country. In spite of all the efforts made by the Central Government and State Government through various commissions and committees in this direction, a few children of the society have not been able to drive full advantage of the educational facilities given to them.

Slavery has an infamous history in the United States because it contradicts the history the American struggle for democracy, equality and justice for all in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It contradicts the American struggle against British domination, taxation without representation. Our Founding fathers saw no rights, justice and equality for Black people. They saw no freedom and voted across the board for the continuation of slavery; a system that imprisoned in bondage of laboring for whites for the duration of each Black persons life. It subjected blacks, to constant violence, murder, rape and imprisonment, for slavery was a cruel and inhumane system, which people like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and all those other great men shouldve never supported; but they did! History shows that Blacks, abused, kidnapped from Africa, enslaved, rights taken, forced to labor for free until death; stood and fought with their enslavers, against the Indians, throughout the frontier during Colonial history, also in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnamese War, and the War in Iraq and the War in Afghanistan. Blacks fought gallantly but this history has been invisible in most American History books, not told, and denied throughout the history of America. I wish to expose that history give people a glimmer of the truth that though slaves, Blacks like the White colonist too wanted freedom, justice and democracy in America as citizens!
