The Algerian Islamist Abdullah Anas, 'perhaps the greatest warrior of the Afghan Arabs', fought the Soviet Union for a decade. As one of the earliest Arabs to join the Afghan jihad, he counted as brothers-in-arms the future icons of Al-Qaeda's global war, from Abdullah Azzam to Osama bin Laden to Omar Abdel-Rahman, and befriended key Afghan jihadi figures such as Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Lion of Panjshir. To the Mountains is an intimate portrait of this brutal war, tracing Anas's involvement in the conflict, as well as his experiences of the Algerian civil war (1992-8) and his sojourn in 'Londonistan'. Brushing shoulders with everyone from Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi to Jalaluddin Haqqani, Anas opted for his own independent route, seeking to persuade the Afghan Arabs that they should not be distracted by attacks on the West. Paradoxically, he remains committed to the broader Islamist movement, believing that jihad will continue till the end of time, yet has also spent years talking to the Taliban, seeking to build a lasting peace in Afghanistan. This is his story. Co-written with investigative journalist Tam Hussein, Anas's memoir will doubtless become a seminal primary source on the rise of global jihadism.

Fasting is one of the pillars of Islam. It is an act of worship like none other for it requires abstention from man‟s natural urges and needs. It has been prescribed as a weapon against Satan whose way to the hearts of Man is through man‟s desires. When Man is able to control and overpower the evil urges within him, he attains tranquility of the heart and soul. When he attains this, he is able to obey His Lord and perfect his service to Him. The fruits of the observance of this act of worship, which Allah has ascribed to Himself by saying, “Fasting is for My sake and I shall reward accordingly” cannot be realised except through its perfection. For this, the votary requires the necessary knowledge. Knowledge is like the leader and deeds are its followers. Knowledge and deed are like twins that are inseparable. It is with this in mind that I have persevered to provide in this book all that is required by the fasting person during the month of Ramadhan until he completes his fast with the `Eid ul Fitr prayer. I have included in this book the arguments of different scholars and also provided relevant proofs from the theological texts so that the believer may perform his obligations in Ramadhan equipped with knowledge and conviction.

For Muslims concerned for this freedom, one of the major difficulties is the 'punishment for apostasy' - death for those who desert Islam. This book argues that the law of apostasy and its punishment by death in Islamic law is untenable in the modern period. Apostasy conflicts with a variety of foundation texts of Islam and with the current ethos of human rights, in particular the freedom to choose one's religion. Demonstrating the early development of the law of apostasy as largely a religio-political tool, the authors show the diversity of opinion among early Muslims on the punishment, highlighting the substantial ambiguities about what constitutes apostasy, the problematic nature of some of the key textual evidence on which the punishment of apostasy is based, and the neglect of a vast amount of clear Qur'anic texts in favour of freedom of religion in the construction of the law of apostasy. To those who seek genuine and authentic ideas of the Quran and Hadith, these expositions have become stumbling blocks. Therefore, I seek to expostulate the basic facts and ideas with supporting evidences that constitute Islam that I gained by years of painstaking and difficult research. The style of writing in this book is much against the traditions and style adopted in normal book writing. It is not divided into chapters but mere orations; some ideas are repeated several times and that too in many different angles. I, therefore seek your indulgence and patience to read and understand and do not come to conclusions by just going through parts of the book. The contractual obligations between you the reader and me is that if you are a Mumin who fully believes in Allah and Rasool (Quran and Hadith) then study this book, if not do not lay hands on this book.
