Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject African Studies - Literature, grade: A, University of Education (Foreign languages), course: English language, language: English, abstract: This thesis was based on an ethnographic study of the Sisaala Bayira performance in context. The research was conducted in the Sisaala east, located at the north-eastern part of Ghana. The data was gathered through fieldwork on live Bayira performances during funerals at Walembelle and Tumu using participant observation and interviews as main research tools. The main objective of the study was an exploration of the role of the historical, cultural context and the aesthetic features embedded within Bayira performances and their contributions to African oral literature. The theories which grounded the study were Tedlock’s and Schechner & Turner’s Performance Theories. Bayira performances were captured by audiovisual recordings, which were then translated from Sisaali into English using Peter Newmark’s Theoretical ideas on translation. They were coded and used for critical analysis. The results reveal that Bayira performances are embedded with aesthetic and symbolic representations, whereby Bayira performers use figurative language, histrionic gestures and other paralinguistic features as effective performance skills. The art of Bayira performance is tantamount to warfare whereby performers use pithy expressions to demonstrate panegyric skills, exhortation, admonition and trade in diatribes. The use of symbols ushers realism into the art of Bayira performance. Bayira performance has several pedagogical implications apart from moral lessons. Bayira songs teach communal and traditional values and comment on issues affecting the community and individuals in society. They teach people extended knowledge and wisdom by praising good behaviour and condemning unacceptable acts which are inimical to society.

The work focusses on the different facets of colonial and post-colonial images of racial discrimination, exploitation, oppression, torture, dehumanization, and alienation, as well as the manner in which the dramatist explicates these horrible consequences in his work, Sizwe Bonzi Is Dead. It provides a critical viewpoint on the playwright's portraiture of many characters, themes, and other concerns highlighted as symbolic representations of diverse aspects of colonialism. According to the research, Athol Fugard's Sizwe Bansi Is Dead is a literary endeavour to wage a literary war against European and Western imperialists who continue to make life difficult for minorities, colonized, and oppressed people, particularly in South Africa.
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2024 in the subject Theater Studies, Dance, grade: A, University of Education (Faculty of Foreign languages), course: English language, language: English, abstract: This paper presents a semiotic analysis of the Sisaala Bayira in the Sisaala Traditional Area. It is based on Sander's semiotic theory. It examines the symbolic meaning of the Sisaala Bayira and its relevance for society. In terms of comprehending and conserving culture and customs, the investigation of the symbolic meanings and representations of Bayira performances is highly relevant. By exploring the symbolism and representations ingrained in Bayira, a traditional performance form, one can understand its deep cultural significance and its role as a vehicle for communicating cultural stories, rituals, and values. Bayira performance frequently combines a variety of elements, all of which are purposefully chosen to convey certain meanings, including dance, music, narrative, and rituals. Performers can convey intricate storylines, feelings, and messages to an audience by using the symbolic language of Bayira. In the Sisaala Bayira, symbolic representations and meanings are important in a variety of ways. They facilitate communication by expressing intricate concepts and messages that are ingrained in the collective consciousness of the group. These symbols serve as potent means of expressing historical, cultural, and traditional beliefs. They are also open rites, ceremonies, and artistic forms.

As a nation, we have made very little progress in our attempt to develop over the years. For any meaningful social and economic advancement in the environment in which we find ourselves, it was realised that there is the need to increase and improve the country's middle level manpower.
