A provocative study that reconsiders our notion of play—and how its deceptively wholesome image has harmed and erased people of color. Contemporary theorists present play as something wholly constructive and positive. But this broken definition is drawn from a White European philosophical tradition that ignores the fact that play can, and often does, hurt. In fact, this narrow understanding of play has been complicit in the systemic erasure of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) from the domain of leisure. In this book, Aaron Trammell proposes a corrective: a radical reconsideration of play that expands its definition to include BIPOC suffering, subjugation, and taboo topics such as torture. As he challenges and decolonizes White European thought, Trammell maps possible ways to reconcile existing theories with the fact that play is often hurtful and toxic. Trammell upends current notions by exploring play’s function as a tool in the subjugation of BIPOC. As he shows, the phenomenology of play is a power relationship. Even in innocent play, human beings subtly discipline each other to remain within unspoken rules. Going further, Trammell departs from mainstream theory to insist that torture can be play. Approaching it as such reveals play’s role in subjugating people in general and renders visible the long-ignored experiences of BIPOC. Such an inclusive definition of play becomes a form of intellectual reparation, correcting the notion that play must give pleasure while also recasting play in a form that focuses on the deep, painful, and sometimes traumatic depths of living.

The Milwaukee Miracle even prospered during WWII, building war bikes for the armed forces. By the 1950s, they’d buried their last American-built competitor, Indian, and gained a hold over the US market that they maintain to this day. A remarkable story deserves a remarkable space to recount it. Such is the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, which opened in 2009. Harley-Davidson partnered with Motorbooks to create this book relaying Harley-Davidson’s story, as told through the museum’s displays and archive assets.

It is well documented that one of the primary catalysts of intense language contact is the expansion of empire. This is true not only of recent history, but it is equally applicable to the more remote past. An exemplary case (or better: cases) of this involves Aramaic. Due to the expansions of empires, Aramaic has throughout its long history been in contact with a variety of languages, including Akkadian, Greek, Arabic, and various dialects of Iranian. This books focuses on one particular episode in the long history of Aramaic language contact: the Syriac dialect of Aramaic in contact with Greek. In this book, Butts presents a new analysis of contact-induced changes in Syriac due to Greek. Several chapters analyze the more than eight-hundred Greek loanwords that occur in Syriac texts from Late Antiquity that were not translated from Greek. Butts also dedicates several chapters to a different category of contact-induced change in which Syriac-speakers replicated inherited Aramaic material on the model of Greek. All of the changes discussed in the book are located within their broader Aramaic context and analyzed through a robust contact linguistic framework. By focusing on the Syriac language itself, Butts introduces new – and arguably more reliable – evidence for locating Syriac Christianity within its Greco-Roman context. This book, thus, is especially important for the field of Syriac studies. The book also contributes to the fields of contact linguistics and the study of ancient languages more broadly by analyzing in detail various types of contact-induced change over a relatively long period of time.

This book reveals a multitude of information hidden in the layers of China’s economy, drawing a wealth of information from materials published only in the Chinese language, in-print and on Chinese-language websites, and previously not accessible to the English-speaking world. Anyone who holds a mutual fund/pension fund may, nowadays, have a portfolio that is subject to repercussions originating from what is going on in China. The story of how Caterpillar fell victim, in 2013, to Enron-like accounting fraud in China, and incurred a loss of a startling US$ 580 million, is by no means an isolated event, but a thing that ordinary investors in the western world need to know about. Nowadays, an ordinary Joe’s investment might be impacted by things that are taking shape in China. Could some Chinese companies, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, possibly become the next Enron-like development? An American professor of financial accounting points out how a peculiar corporate structure used by certain companies originated from China may be a worrisome untoward design. This book enables readers to gain insights into the above noted, as well as many other, important events. This book illustrates how the 135% corporate debt to GDP ratio (the highest among the world’s major economies), vast overcapacity, gigantic property glut, together with the country’s pro-cyclical fiscal structure, may bring China’s GDP annual growth to below 4%, sooner than you can imagine. China has, in 2014, overtaken the United States, not in its size of GDP, but in its size of total corporate debt, and also in the ratio of total corporate debt to GDP, which is 135% as of July 2014. This ratio way exceeds the threshold of 80% that the OECD considers as the maximum safe level for a nation’s corporate-debt-to-GDP ratio. China’s corporate-debt-to-GDP ratio is now a whopping 81% larger than that of the US (which is 75%). This book illustrates how China’s economy is now prone to destabilization from the above, and other factors, such as China’s ongoing bad debt trap, and China’s uniquely pro-cyclical fiscal structure. And, such ominously destabilizing setting is now made worse by China’s already extremely high debt-to-GDP ratio, of 282%. Said pro-cyclical fiscal structure is a key issue almost entirely overlooked hitherto, in studies on China in the English-speaking world. China has an income tax base that is constituted by only less than 2% of the country’s population. Consequently, such fiscal structure is overly reliant on sales taxes and corporate taxes, and this makes China’s economy so much more prone to destabilization than any other major economies in the world. As, in macroeconomics, income tax being counter-cyclical (and hence is congenial to stabilizing the economy) and sales tax/corporate tax being pro-cyclical, effecting a feedback loop that further destabilizes the economy. Such structurally predicated menace is now more debilitating, given China’s extremely high debt-to-GDP ratio. This book elucidates on how, in the decade prior to 2008, causes of China’s double-digit economic growth can be identified as being the initial stage of development, in the nature of a Faustian Bargain. There has been an array of expediencies practiced by Beijing, in the past, that significantly boosted China’s GDP in the short run, but these were at the expense of the economy's long-run sustainable growth. This author identifies said expediencies as China’s Faustian Bargains at work, in the forms of monetized state landlordism, over-leveraging to pursue profligate investments funded by financial repression of household savers, and the decades of perilous expensing-out of the nation’s environmental endowments. All these said expedient GDP boosters bear Faustian consequences, and this book shows how they are now increasingly surfacing, and making the aforesaid significant lowering of GDP growth highly probable. This book illustrates: how China's sub-standard accounting/auditing practices, and the country’s grossly ineffective legal system, may have repercussions, unbeknownst to you, for your investments. Avot, a tractate in the Mishnah (c. 220 CE), is the single most studied and commented upon Jewish text outside the Hebrew Bible. Commonly published as a stand-alone volume with the title Pirke Avot (“Chapters of the Fathers” or “Ethics of the Fathers”), Avot is also included in Jewish prayer books to encourage group and home study in every form of Judaism. A number of scholarly studies over the past three decades have reconceptualized the historical purpose and stylistic character of tractate Avot, which is unlike any other in the Mishnah. Some scholars have recognized that Avot’s content reflects the ideological positions of an elitist fellowship originally formed according to paradigms established by Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Subversive Principles furthers the argument that Avot was composed to facilitate the formation of such a fellowship by engaging the analytical insights of Pierre Bourdieu regarding symbolic language and other theorists elucidating the role of exchange theory in religions.
